Here is a picture of what fellow PS3 owners may look/feel like if Sony goes the way of the Dreamcast.

Wow, the film industry is saying that Spiderman 3, Sony's upcoming movie, is the most expensive movie ever made - at supposedly over $500 million dollars for the whole thing, is this showing that Sony is alright in the bank or hoping to refresh assets on the popularity of the film?

http://radaronline.com/from-the-magazine/2007/04/kim_masters_spiderman.php

As production dragged on into late summer -it had been scheduled to conclude in June -stories about the project's ballooning budget started popping up all over town. But in the end, even the most hyperbolic of observers may have underestimated the final tab. Industry insiders claim that Sony spent $350 million or more on production alone. With marketing and promotion factored in, the total price tag will approach half a billion dollars -positioning Spider-Man 3 as the most expensive movie of all time. - Radar Online

Is Sony crazy? Cocky? With how much money they are losing on the PS3, low demand for the console in general, and free online service - is it smart for Sony, the megacorperation it is, to be throwing money out like this? Some critics say that a movie like Spiderman 3 could be done on a $200 million budget...

Even if they did spend $500 Million on the film, the last one grossed over $750 Million.  That's a 50% return on investment.  You think that's stupid on Sony's part?

It's easier to be a critic than create a box office that capable of cashing in billions of dollar.

Spider-Man (2002) $806,700,000

Spider-Man 2 (2004) $783,577,893

It's not how much money they spent, it's how much they make that is gonna count.

How do you spend $500 million on a single movie? :? That's ludicrous. Most of these big budget movies are crap anyway, I wouldn' pay to see any of them.

They are far from good in the bank when their games division is $1.7 billion in the red already.

First of all, you edited out the part of the story where Sony actually denis that the movie cost $350 million to make.  They specificially and repeatedy have said that the movie cost less than $300 million.  Granted, I am splitting hairs here since once you add in marketing you are probably close to that $500 million point.

Are they crazy or cocky?  It's Spiderman.  The movie is expected to shatter opening records and make around $150 million on opening weekend.  There is no way this movie bombs or fails to make a profit.  DVD sales alone are going to be huge.  So if you ask me, spending that much was a no brainer.

What I want to know is what the hell is going on in Hollywood that this movie ended up costing so much?  Effects?  I think we should realize by now that movies can be made with nothing BUT effects (ie. green screen) and still be considered cheap.  We saw this with movies like Sin City and 300.  If a movie can be nothing BUT effects and still cost under $200M then why does Spiderman cost so much?  The stars?  Please.  They were signed to a 3 movie deal before the first movie evermade a dime and so they probably aren't making that much.

Just like with a movie it takes big initial investment for big returns. If PS3 wins them the format war and becomes at least somewhat successful they'll make big money on it in the end.

the producer of spiderman 3 was reported saying that she didnt want to say the exact amount they spent, but that it was under $300 million.  id trust the producer over movie critics and stuff.

so if they make the same amount as the other spiderman movies, theyre looking to take in a ton of money.

It took DVD years to kill off VHS. Blu-Ray may be a good format but its going to be atleast a decade before it becomes standard.

If Spiderman 3 at least 10 percent better than both of the other movies, this would probably be the greatest thing they have right now going.

Yeah well it's all about cost of HDTVs, Blu-ray titles, how well PS3 sells (pretty much the only BD player people will buy), and whether or not Blu-ray will make its way into PC's as a storage medium.

Incase you missed it Blu-Ray already took off without the PS3 holding it back, and is stomping HD-DVD into the ground.

Blu-Ray has already proven it will be next in line, we just have to wait for HDTV to became a Standard.

That's about 1/10 as much profit as Microsoft makes a year. Sony isn't in nearly as good of a financial state as Microsoft.

If you think Sony is giving you a deal, think again. The manufacturing cost of a system has absolutely NOTHING to do with relative value to the customer.

Well, lets not forget the money they make after the movie get launched: the franchising, the products based on the image of Spider Man (of course some go straight to Marvel and the companies that make said products, but its so much money that they dont complain that much), the DVDs, the Blu-Ray (exclusive, for those that dont care/know) discs that will sell like crazy, the permit to Tvs and Paid channels to let it be the first to put it on demand programs, and so on. Its a lot of money. The money made on the Theaters around the world are just the beggining of the printing (money).

Just my 2 cents on it.

Do you even realize how much profit Microsoft makes? Hint: Sony is a company with 160,000 employees, a dozen different divisions, and owns a third of Hollywood and the music industry. What is their annual profit? $1.042 billion, for ALL of Sony. Now there's Microsoft. Only half as many employees, no owned assets in film or music, about half as many divisions, each of which is only a third the size of any of Sony's divisions. Can you guess Microsoft's annual profit? $12 billion. Almost a dozen times greater than Sony. Xbox division may be bleeding, but to Microsoft, it's only a papercut. To Sony, $500 million is HALF their income.

Unfortunately, they're going to make the money back.

And no, I wasn't trying to be anti-Sony there...I was being anti-comic book movies, as they suck (except for Batman Begins, obviously).
