My friend recently bought a 46" Sony Bravia. Sony was running a special Free PS3 with a Sony Bravia TV. That will definatly push some PS3's the only problem is they can't be making a ton of money that way. I found a link about Sony officually running that special in France but they are running it here in the states also at least at some locations.

They're probably trying to make money off the software and Blu-ray movies.

Software is cheap. You can produce a game to give away for 20 cents. Giving away a PS3 though is 600 bucks of lost revenue.

I'm sure Sony has assessed the cost/benefit from giving away a PS3 and the gained software revenue and sees it as atleast a draw.

They are not really giving the PS3 away. HDTV prices are dropping like rain. That Sony Bravia is already pretty much outdated and in a few months of being outsold by the newer models, will most like drop in price drastically. They are getting rid of older HDTVs under the guise of giving away a PS3 meanwhile they are gonna make a ton more money off of gamers buying games and blu ray movies for their new set up. Not to mention surround sound systems that Sony also makes.

Its all a ploy, its getting rid of old stock.

Yeah, a free system on a TV that is selling for way above manufacturing costs. Not really a bad move, plus with the $500 free system, you are looking to have more people with extra cash buying games, movies, and things off PSN.

You gotta do what you gotta do in business to get ahead.

This is less of a "get a game console in consumers hands" but more of a "get a Blu-Ray player in consumers hands". Toshiba is running the same type of promotions with their HD players.

And speaking of MS, didn't they jsut recently run that whole buy a X360 HD add on and basically Heroes on HD DVD for free (valued at $99 I think). I also think they are giving even more movies with that deal so the add on is actually free lol.

Stop trying to say Sony is deseperate because if that is the criteria then MS and Toshiba are just as bad.

Then why is Future Shop in Canada (possibly BEst Buy also) running the same promo with the 360? At least Sony is selling a TV out of the deal. MS is just giving them away. But this is SW...so Sony running the deal is desperate while MS is probably just doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Wow...lets ignore, the 360 doing the same exact thing in Best Buys, the fact that the HDTV they are selling is way overpriced making the "free" PS3 really not free at all, or the fact with only 30 million gamers adopting this gen that leaves roughly around 90 million PS2 owners who still havent made a choice yet and are sticking with the PS2.

Yea but if we ignore all that then you are right....Sony is totally desperate.

That's a pretty cool idea, since a 46 inch TV is making plenty of profit on it's own.

It's funny how many lemmings flock to an anti-Sony thread...until someone points out that the 360 is doing the exact same thing. Then suddenly the thread dies and disappears.

Countdown to another thread on the exact same issue in 5...4...

that promotion is likely put in place by Best Buy / Futureshop (best buy owns futureshop).

Not only is the 360 in a worse boat hardware wise then the PS2, but Sony never "forced" people to buy PS2s over again. Before you would pay a fee and they would fix it for you, then after a while they started fixing all the DRE PS2s for free. Mine was fixed for free and I only had to buy one PS2. You are grossly overgeneralizing.

It will be 8 years and the PS2 will still be selling strong, yes I do strongly believe their are millions of PS2 fans still out there who havnt upgraded yet. heck their fanbase is still growing strong with PS2s selling well still.

The facts that Sony will be selling people an HDTV that is being priced at way more then it costs to make and in most cases at the point of having a huge price drop and hide that huge inflated price by claiming to offer a "free" PS3. And like many have pointed out already, the 360 was also bundled with HDTVs at Best Buy, even the Wii. The difference here is that Sony makes money off the HDTV that is bundled with the product while MS and Nintendo didnt.

Its marketing baby.

Right. MS never gives anything away.

they dont give away TV's, though.

They are not giving away TVs, they are overcharging you for an outdated HDTV and bundling it with a PS3 so people wont notice and calling it "free". Sony is making money off this bundle, dont doubt it, HDTVs are priced at much higher then it costs to make them, they are not like video game systems.

LOL

Get a free PS3 with the purchase of a Blu-ray movie.

Not sure if this would work (probably not), but Sony should try it out since everything else they've tried has failed.

if customers didn't buy a new ps2, they would be left with games and no console to play them on...yes, "forcing" is the way to look at it.. so much so that the courts had to get involved...

sony STILL refuses to give the ratio of broken ps2.... to say it's less than the 360 is a joke... MS is at least honest...

just because you were lucky doesn't mean everyone else was... i had 3...

the ps2 fanbase, more than likely, are replacement ps2 needed... so, little johnny has 20 ps2 games... and it breaks... so mommy just gets a new ps2... pretty easy at $99..

you don't know the margins they're selling their flat panels at... so how much money they make may not be enough to offset the collossal losses on the ps3 itself...

you really need to get off sony's leg and join reality for a moment...

but i know you won't...;)
