I don't believe the PS3 can compete this Christmas without a price drop. Only real hardcore gamers with money will pay $600 for any console, and a high percentage of that limited market has already bought one. There are no supply issues, and haven't been for a long time, so any of them can go pick one up right now. Add to that the fact that the XBOX360 is almost guaranteed a price drop this year (since it will be two years old and hasn't seen one yet). I also wouldn't be surprised if the Wii drops to $200. Stand-alone Blu-Ray players will also be cheaper this Fall.

The same goes with the PSP. Hardware sales have been poor for nearly a year now, and software sales have been abysmal (DS software outsold PSP software 8:1 in Japan last year). Only Sony/Universal is even making movies for it anymore, so there is even less reason to buy it than when it launched.

Yeah, this would sell more systems.  Problem is: this'd exponentialize Sony's (videogameing branch) speed in it's dire plunge into debt with every console sold.  Sony assumes that the consumer will be willing to buy a 500, more usually 600$ console once it's few games worth playing hit beyond this holiday season.  They've been wrong before.

I can however see a Wii price drop sometime after they get their heavy hitters out.  Any company (sony included) wants to make as many sales as they can at a higher price than a lower one, it all depends on when they desire the sales boost.  Traditionally, it'd make sense for Nintendo to drop price and release a few new colors this holiday season to coincide with it's big releases.

they'll offer incentives at current pricing before dropping the price...

the new 65mm cell tech should lower costs, but noone thinks sony will pass on the savings for a loooooooong time...

The 360 and Wii will be close this holiday season, possibly selling even 2x what the ps3 will.

I disagree....I think when it gets games on the shelves like Metal Gear, Tekken and so forth...those PS2 owners will jump on board.

Any system can compete at the holidays. People pay more than they want or need to at the holidays.

If people predict that the ps3 struggles every month this year , Sony had better be prepared to ship at least 3 million for the holidays.

Sony is already losing 200$ per PS3. Price drop isn't coming until 2008, and PS3 will sell no problem at xmas. Here in toronto, they have been doing excellent ever since release. They don't stay on shelves for long, a day tops.

Sony needs a price drop. Add to that they need to make people care that the PS3 exists, which will not happen for a lot of people.

And between HS, MGS4, and Lair, Sony will be lucky to have one of those out before Christmas.

Lair and HS don't matter, since no one has heard of them.  MGS4 is the one they really need out this year.  If not, they're going to get creamed.

I went to purchase a PS3 just last month (late February). Still sold out in every store (I tried Costco, BestBuy, CompUSA, Gamestop, and Target). I had to go to a Toys R Us to pick one up (4 left. All were 60GB units and another customer came to purchase one at the same time as I was striding in!)

well ebgames\gamestop is no longer carrying the 20gig model.  I think they at least temporarily stopped making them to produce the 60gig fast enough to meet current demand.

I dont think so. But thats just me. We will see at E3 (or whatever its called now.) Kojima said late last Sept that MGs was still well over a year from being done, so we will see. Might be close.

The type of person willing to pay $600 for a videogame system is the type of person who is an "early adopter" of new technology. That person would have already bought a PS3 by the end of this summer at the latest. The longer they keep the current price tag, the worse it will sell per month.

They have all been announced for before Christmas, and E3 has been gimped to mearly a shadow of its former self, now from what I know TGS is the biggest show for gaming.

There is still no chance to compete anyway. If Sony does a price drop, MS and Nintendo will follow suit. If there is any sort of price drop on any of the 3 consoles, Sony will lose out the most.

Agreed. No matter how many great franchises they have lined up, they will hit a wall with that high price tag. Not to mention the other consoles have great titles lined up as well.

Yes. The outside world encompasses a large, diverse group of people. The gamers here on System Wars seem to be (for the most part) pre-pubescent nerds who require Mommy and Daddy's contribution towards any gaming device. (Judging by the quality of the posts I see here daily)

I love how people always bring up the 20gig model yet that pretty much does not exist. A store may get 1 of those for every half dozen 60gigs.
Also it is amusing how people are expecting 360 to stay the same. If 360 drops when Halo 3 comes out, Where do you think the Fanbase for GTA will side? A 300dollar more expensive system? Or a system with Halo 3 and Madden also not to mention 300dollars cheaper.
But The MGS!!! but The Tekken!!! Too bad none are in 2007. Also I love the declining trend in sales for those series. MGS only 3.5 million and Tekken 5 only 1.5million. Both the lowest selling in franchise history

That's funny. I live near Seattle and am friends with one of the local Gamestop managers. I was in the other night to buy an extra 360 controller and asked her if they had PS3s out of curiosity. She rolled her eyes and said they always had PS3s.

I was also at Fry's last weekend, and they had a stack of about a dozen of the $599 units sitting on the floor and no one was even looking at them.
