Which do you feel was "bigger" and will make more of an impact on the company?

In my opinion, I think the $299 PS3 slim is the better deal. While the 360 price drop is a welcomed move, I don't think the price point for the 360 was ever much of an issue. Everyone complained about the PS3's price, since it was the most expensive.

I think what MS could have done that would have been a better counter to the PS3 price cut would be to either drop the fee for XBL (most likely wouldn't happen) or drop the price of it. I think it would attract more consumers, as well as please it's current user base.

What are you thoughts on this?

PS3 is better but quick question, does the added wifi for the 360 increase it by 100? Meaning without it, the package can be cheaper?

XBOX LIVE GOLD, FREE FOR THE 1st YEAR!

As far as the price cuts, at least the consumers are going to save money, yay!

I always thought it was odd that M$ sees the ELITE as equal to the PS3 as far as the value they've assigned it.

But even stranger, is the Wii's price point.

The Wii is approaching it's 3rd Xmas and never had a price drop, rather, in some sectors of the world, the price went up!

My problem with Ms is that there pricing isn't so bad. The ps3 price is a ton better, but regardless the 360 price is still decent. What MS needs to do is lower the price of their accessories. The prices on those are ridiculous.

No, the ELITE doesn't have Free Wifi or a year of Free Xbox Live. Sorry. :P I was talking to the TC, as he mentioned the idea.

I was just suggesting it would be a good idea to for M$ to counter the $299 PS3 as the PS3 has a 120GB HDD, has Free Online, Rechargable Controllers, Free WiFi, and a friggin' Blu-Ray player.

The ELITE is EXACTLY the same as it has been all this time (a Black 360 with a 120GB HDD), except M$ took out the HD cable, So, use your old cables.

Definitely Sony's price cut. MS is going to have to do more to counter it. Maybe adding a free WiFi adapter.

Because many people can't connect their ps3's directly to a router unless they have a 100-200 ft cable... Ever think of that one?

Some people want to play online, but don't have their consoles next to their modem. They're going to need a WiFi for that, preferably one that isn't overpriced.

This is System Wars and people will tell you what value is and how to set up your gaming setup and what you need for your console. I have wifi for all three consoles but I prefer wired so all of them are wired.

I predict:

PS3's price cut will have a much greater impact then 360's. I have far too many friends who'd like to get a PS3 and have said they held off because of the price point. now it's at an affordable price with all the bells and whistles than Xbox 360 Elite has plus the Wi Fi (correct me if i'm wrong but i don't think the Elite gets Wi Fi tossed in does it?).

if people want a 360 bad enough they'd get the 300 dollar 60 gigabyte, or the 200 dollar Arcade version. No PS3 has come to the price point (new i'm saying not used).

The Elite going down to 300 dollars, i think - in my opinion - was a backup plan in case PS3 did the price drop. that is probably why it wasn't annouanced at Gamecom. but i doubt it will have much of an impact.

I think Microsoft could have done abit more with their adjusting price points and all. I would have loved to have seen the Arcade phased out and drop the Pro to $199 (I still think this will happen) and bring the Elite to $299 with the HDMI cable still included. However I think Sony's move was more of one last ditch effort to improve sales overall and bring their console back into this race. Not only did they play the price drop card, but also did a redesign and went from making money on each console sold to losing money again.

Now even though they've said they are making it up in software, we all know Sony isn't doing so hot in terms of software this generation. However I feel that this holiday season both the PS3 and 360 will be neck and neck in terms of sales, and if either does better than the other it won't be by much. In the long run I don't see Sony's Slim boosting sales long term since I believe Microsoft has a redesign card up their sleeve which could introduce a $199 360 with a decent size hard drive, wifi, and rechargable battery pack included (plus maybe a game bundled with it). Which if that is the case that'll kill all the hype built around the PS3 Slim and shift focus back onto Microsoft. At this point Microsoft isn't on the attack, they can kick back and watch to see what happens, especially after last holiday season and the fact that they are up by 8 million units.

We have to remember Sony is playing catch up here and they now have to keep attention on themselves and have to continue to outshine Microsoft in nearly every aspect out there. Price wise they are doing good, but Microsoft still has the cheapest console on the market (Arcade at $199) and I've seen a few deals where you can get an extra controller with a 360 and things like that. Plus Microsoft usually has a game bundle for the holidays as well and Microsoft has a few heavy hitters coming out this year that have gotten alot of attention with more to follow shortly after.

Both have alot going for them right now, and with Sony's recent moves they seem to have played all their cards and put the ball in Microsoft's court for now. The choice is on them of where things go from here, will it be a price war or will they simply attempt to outdo them on the offerings with bigger and better bundles, or will they push for bigger better software next year and keep Sony out in the cold (like with GTA IV episodes). Also Nintendo could come in and outdo them with both with a major price drop, Wii Motion Plus, and another game bundled with their console (Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, or New Super Mario Bros. Wii).

I thought the Elite was equal to the PS3 when the HD was bigger.

Now I can admit that, for the same price, the ps3 is a better deal as far as hardware goes.

That said, I still want a 360.

The two things that are hard to argue are the WiFi and Blu-Ray. I would not use Wifi even if the 360 has it, but I can understand that some would. Blu-Ray would be nice, no if, ands, or buts about it. I used to counter these two things with the bigger HDD of the Elite, but since that benefit is gone, I have to give the Hardware win to Sony.

This topic has been done to death. Where have you been for the last week? More people were waiting for a PS3 price cut , yes. There are a lot of people waiting for certain games though as well. You can't play Forza 3, Halo ODST or Left 4 Dead 2 on the PS3. I own all 3 systems, so the price isn't a big deal to me. Only games I want on PS3 still is InFamous and Uncharted 2 for this year. All multiplats I get on my XBox 360.

Because many people can't connect their ps3's directly to a router unless they have a 100-200 ft cable... Ever think of that one?

Most people have cable outlets in every room, so chances of needing Wifi in a house or apartment is pretty slim. The only time you really need WiFi is if you have a laptop. I used a wired connection for my original XBox and Dreamcast for years. Never needed Wifi. So it's only needed on occassion or for convenience more then anything. It's also good if you have PSP or DSi as well. That was my main reason for getting a router.

I can see that, that's a good breakdown. :)

For me, all my real life friends have PS3's or PS3's/360's combo's. All my friends have HDTV's, and all that, so they use Blu a lot more than the younger crowd. The buddies that have the combo, they play the exclusives on the 360 for the most part.

I have always been the guy inthe crowd that sticks out, and in this case, I have all three, and I have Two 360's/two PS3's. Other than my trendsetting st.yle I definitely can see the other side of the fence. When I buy a console, I buy them at launch, so I can't worry about what or when my firends are going to make the plunge. I remember getting my 360, and my entire friendslist were Xbox 1 guys that didn't upgrade. That's the problem with trendsetting, it's awkward at first, but like fashion, that's just how I am. :)

If I was a guy who bought a 360 in 2006, and I saw the PS3 come down to $299, assuming I have an HDTV, I think I would become a PS360 guy at that point.

I think MS's price cut on the Pro was a better cut, but since MS is discontinueing the Pro I'm not going to count it. Sony's price cut is better, but I don't think $299 is going to sell much long term for either console despite MS having mild success w/ the pro at $299.

If MS doesn't have a new 360 up their sleeves I suspect the ps3 is going to catch up to the 360 over the next two years at the current price point.

I'd say the PS3's price cut is more impressive. It started at $600, and now it's $300, basically meaning you get the system half off, which, IMO, is great for those turned off by the demanding price for a gaming console. I mean, if we're willing to get a 360 for $400 at launch, then there's no excuse not to want a PS3...unless you just absolutely don't want one :P...then, well, I respect your guy's decison ;).

MS should include a six month Gold XBL card in every Elite box.

People forget to add the cost of a headset on the PS3.

I always thought it was odd that M$ sees the ELITE as equal to the PS3 as far as the value they've assigned it.

But even stranger, is the Wii's price point.

The Wii is approching it's 3rd Xmas and never had a price drop, rather, in some sectors of the world, the price went up!

PS3_3DO

MS should include a six month Gold XBL card in every Elite box.

People forget to add the cost of a headset on the PS3.

Because head sets aren't needed to play online, unlike Gold.

Playing a game like Socom you really need a headset. If you have high speed internet I doubt you care about paying $4 a month for XBL.

Come on, with the money again? I paid $40 for the year, but the money isn't the point. Head sets add to the experience and really can help squads, no doubt. But it's still not needed.

Then how do you perform squad formations and issue orders and other things that need to be relayed quickly?

[QUOTE="mtron32"]^what's the big deal about wifi? My PS3 has it and I never use it.XanderZane

Most people? so you went to everyone in the world and checked their rooms for cable outlets? My internet is set up in the computer room which is down stairs. I am not the ehad of the house hold so I can't just go around moving ****. My parents would be pissed if I moved their **** around. My room which has my pc,ps3,wii,psp, and 360 is no where enar that room... Would you like for me to run 50 ft cables down the stairs so I can be wired?

Let's put this in a little perspective.

Neither PS3 Slim nor 360 Elite live in vacuums. The PS3 slim will sell pretty well into the holidays. Then again, it's the only PS3 SKU that saw a price cut. Meanwhile, the 360 Elite saw a cut. The Pro also saw a cut. And the Arcade will continue to sell because of its low price.

One thing's for sure, the PS3 slim has stronger momentum at the moment since it addresses a significant price reduction that the market's been clamoring for since launch.

That is a good point. I'll give you that. What I'm saying is, if the 360 doesn't break into the top 10 today at Amazon, MS should be very afraid.

MS is making a mistake by not putting the elite with the WiFi adaptor, Halo 3, and a year free of XBL. That would even it out a bit. Instead, the ps3 looks like the much better value. Im going to buying a new 360 anyway, because my launch 360 which I still have is starting to act funny, still working, but acting funny.

Adding a 250gb drive to the Elite will only make things worse.. 360 hard-drives are crazy expensive.. e.g. PS3 upgrade cost to 500GB=£70 XBOX 360 upgrade cost to 120GB=£90 I upgraded my 60GB PS3 to a 320GB drive for less than £40 no contest... Oink!

What if the Elite comes with a bigger hard drive (say 250GB) and comes packed in with a good game (like maybe Forza 3)?

Sony's, since many people were waiting for a price cut to get a PS3 and I think $300 is pretty good for most of them.

Sony's price cut is a much bigger deal and I expect to see a decent jump in sales because of it. I wouldn't call what MS did much of a price cut at all as their cheapest SKU is still $199. All they did was beef up their mainstream SKU, but I just don't see a huge jump in sales because of it. The elite really needs to be priced a bit lower then the PS3 IMO.

That's only one outlet out of many. A better litmus test would be to check NPDs from now and through the holidays, and then into March. Only by examining the trending across 6 months would we see how things are panning out.

PS3 of course is the better deal.

1- all of gamers have been complaining abt the price and now they have vo excuse.

2- its incridable value is now matched wz a reasonable price.

3-there are cheaper models of the x360, why buying the most expensive?

It's going to cost more and be irrelevant. Why spend $400 on that when you can get 120Gb and Forza for $360.. The same thing goes for Sony's 250gb model. Sony and Microsoft are both trying to school people with 250gb models, those are so unnecessary

Rumor has it it'll be the same price. Of course, it won't appear until Forza 3 comes out, but that's not that far away. Plus don't forget about the Game Marketplace.
