From http://www.tgdaily.com/hardware-features/63917-report-ps4-powered-by-amds-liverpool-apu

According to tgdaily, PS4 to sport AMD's "Liverpool" GCN APU with discrete AMD GCN based GpGPU. They are expecting PS4 to be equiped with Radeon HD 7970 type discrete GPU.

AMD's "Liverpool" APU seems to be similar to AMD's "Kaveri" APU.

AMD Kaveri APU includes Radeon HD 7750(GCN) level GPU

Radeon HD 7970 level GPU would be required for some of E3's tech demos.

The 7970 is the GpGPU. It says 7970 + Liverpool APU.

Later this year, AMD GCNv1 will be replaced by GCNv2.

AMD R7870's GCN has a higher transistor/area density than AMD R7970's GCN design i.e. AMD already revised the GCN design within the 3 month time frame.

I actually like these specs. Hope it is true. If Sony keeps the big investment in first party developed games, I'll buy their console even though I prefer a weaker and cheaper console.

But if true, I have a feeling the PS4 will get a bunch of PC ports.

HD 7970 has hardware support for C++ constructs and includes X86-64 CPU IP (mostly for memory operations atm).

Well if they dont let MS get a huge headstart again, it'll make the next gen console race much more interesting. Thats the key, launch PS4 at the same time or befor Xbox720.

Or, you know, not launch it at $200 higher than the competition. And have games worth playing. And it probably helps if the system isn't hell to program for.

7750 is not that fast , a 6850 destroys it, and there is no way they will put a 7970 type gpu in a console because of cooling and power requirements let alone material costs. The 7970 has a 250w TDP rating, while a 7750 has a whole 55w TDP. They would have to really nerf the clockrates let alone use smaller nm manufacturing method well below 20nm to even make a dent in the TDP.

AMD Trinity's "resonant clock mesh technology" can lower the power consumption for current Radeon HD GCN designs.

Against AMD Llano, AMD Trinity's "resonant clock mesh technology" enables halve the power consumption at the same process node.

Obviously bullsh*t. Sony can't afford to eat the cost of a high-end GPU, and there's near-as-makes-no-difference zero value in including both an integrated GPU and a dedicated GPU (either you're pissing away money and TDP on a high-end dGPU, or the iGPU is wasting silicon that could be used to beef up the CPU).

I could see Sony going with a higher-end APU (especially if AMD can deliver 7750-type performance), but there's no way in hell they'll have something anywhere near on par with a 7970.

So...what does any of this mean?getyeryayasout

Relative to AMD Llano APU and at the same 32nm process tech, AMD Trinity APU's "resonant clock mesh technology" nearly halve it's power consumption.

It's a good bet AMD's Kaveri (and with it's GCN design IGP) would also have "resonant clock mesh technology".

This "resonant clock mesh technology" enables AMD to keep up with Intel's 22nm process tech.

ARM CPUs has been using "resonant clock mesh technology" for years.

Its not going to change the outcome enough to keep the gpu to have a low TDP. with resonant clock mesh technology your only going to see at best 20% power consumption reduction. Even so Kaveri is suppose to still be 100w and that's with a 7750 gpu which again is only 55wTDP. Even if you use the theoretical up to 30% energy saving from the mesh tech, the 7970 would still use 175w and the cpu would be around 45w which adds to 220w TDP which still needs good cooling and plenty of power. Realistically, the 7970 would still be a 200w TDP gpu.

I rather it have something like this (GTX 670) which at 1080p is more powerful then the 7970 I believe. The card is very efficient as well only requiring 140-150watts! I can definitely see this in a PS4 if the console is to be released in late 2013 early 2014. I dont see the need for an APU, but maybe AMD's offering is cheaper to sony.

A single 7970 costs about $600 retail. Of course manufacturers won't go by retail price. If we throw in a somewhat alright CPU then the cost per PS4 is going to be vastly higher than PS3 at launch. How much Sony plans on pricing the console is up to them, but I doubt they are in the position to aim for anything below $600 considering their current financial position.

Normalised to 1Ghz raster units, they about the same.

Anyway, GTX 680 lost against HD7970 (925Mhz) in something like PC heavy Metro 2033 DX11, yet it HD7970 lost against 680 with lightweight Skyrim or Batman Arkham.

Note that HD 7950 has similar bills of materials as HD 7970 i.e. you can guess the margins between 7970 vs 7950.

My HD 7950 hits 7970's 925Mhz with the same voltage settings.

My next experiment is to reflash my 7950's BIOS (currently at 900Mhz) to the latest Sapphire R7950 model with 950Mhz.

You have a serious fetish with AMD dont you? I would wait for real reviews about the ghz editions. A slightly lower voltage on the core does not mean a vastly lower wattage usage at best you looking at 10w if they rearranged the transistors to be more efficient in not bleeding power. But with the higher clock rate you will still be at the 250w TDP rating

Getting a gpu as powerful as the 7970 will be impossible, Even if you use all available means to reduce the TDP without sacrificing performance you would still have a 200w TDP based gpu. And the funny thing is that both MS and Sony had issues cooling gpu's that had around 90w TDP back in 2005, Sony held off PS3 in 2005 to fix the cooling issues while MS ignored it and paid the price with a high failure rate.

AMD has stated that thier yields are improving to lower thier voltages at the current clock speeds.

This parallels NVIDIA's GTX 680 experience i.e. NVIDIA's problem with 1Ghz level GTX 680 yields.

AMD lowers the bar to get sellable yields, while NVIDIA has "must reach 1Ghz or bust".

I hope the next gen of consoles can get as great hardware as possible. I guess ultimately I don't really care how expensive it may end up for console players. If games are being developed on superior console hardware, then the PC versions will be even more amazing, and devs who actually spend time developing a PC version will also have more freedom stretching the limits of PC hardware. Currently it's simply too easy to max out every game on PC even with 3 years old hardware. There is hardly any incentive to upgrade.

[QUOTE="ronvalencia"][QUOTE="04dcarraher"][QUOTE="ronvalencia"] According to AMD; at the same clockspeed, 7970 Ghz Edition has lower TDP(voltage) than the initial 7970.

You have a serious fetish with AMD dont you? I would wait for real reviews about the ghz editions. A slightly lower voltage on the core does not mean a vastly lower wattage usage at best you looking at 10w if they rearranged the transistors to be more efficient in not bleeding power.

AMD has stated that thier yields are improving to lower thier voltages at the current clock speeds which parallels NVIDIA's GTX 680 experience i.e.NVIDIA's problem with 1Ghz level GTX 680 yields.. In general, watts is calculated by voltage x amps.

Yet the 7970 ghz editions are still rated at 250w TDP

I doubt they will use chipsets that will use more then 100w. they will want to keep costs and reliability manageable.

Those specs do sound good if they are really true, but the real challenge is for Sony to price the PS4 less than $600 dollars.

[QUOTE="getyeryayasout"]So...what does any of this mean?getyeryayasout

Relative to AMD Llano APU and at the same 32nm process tech, AMD Trinity APU's "resonant clock mesh technology" nearly halve it's power consumption.

It's a good bet AMD's Kaveri (and with it's GCN design IGP) would also have "resonant clock mesh technology".

This "resonant clock mesh technology" enables AMD to keep up with Intel's 22nm process tech.

This is why I've enjoyed being a console gamer.

You enjoyed it because of an absence of knowledge?

So next PS will basically be a high-end PC?

It would be a bit of a waste if it couldn't run PC games too.

I hope the PS4 blu ray disc drive is much faster than PS3's. it only uses Blu-ray x2 doesn it?
