The PS3 isn't just the smart choice for Blu-ray -- it is the only choice. Be sure to get the Blu-ray Disc remote accessory for an additional $25. For your $424 you not only have the best Blu-ray player available, you have one that should be future-proof, as well.

And with 70% of big studio exclusives you would be mad to go for Hi Def, stick with Blu Ray or digital download services offered on the 360.

Wake me when Blu-ray players are about $150 or so. Oh wait, without competiton that will probably be years, if ever, and discs will never drop below their currently ridiculous mark-up over DVD.

In other words I'm currently just fine with upscaling DVD picture quality. DVD are over-priced enough as it is; I have no desire to pay $40 for HD movies.

blu ray has won. let there be no doubt about that. soon the remaining companies will go Blu-ray.

Downloadable content is the future ofcourse. although i think that might mean higher compressions and therefore a slightly less quality.

That's okay on a normal HD screen, but i play on a HD projector on a cinema screen.. and every compression artifact becomes painfully clear at those sizes...

BR is awesome. I got my first BR movies not long ago. I was content with DVD's but after a while you see how silly you look watching DVD's on a 36" LCD HD monitor lol. Or downstairs where its 52"...big difference mhm.

EDIT: Also guys this thread is no way undermining it as a video games machine. Although it slightly seems like it, now that BR is the victor is very appropriate to say buy a PS3 for BR.

I have 10 PS3 games btw.

ofcourse!!. you should buy it for games. but you CAN play blu ray on it, so why not use it. Planet Earth is my first Blu ray movie/series. But it won't be my last.

But i bought it for the games (3 more smashes to find for burnout by the way....)

My friend has a 110" projection screen, and we compared his laptop's HD DVD drive to an upscaled DVD.

Final result: HD is not worth the cost over regular DVD unless you are a hardcore movie buff.

EDIT: I should make clear though; if you DO want HD movies, I see no reason NOT to go with a PS3 over conventional Blu-ray players.

I don't see why anyone would purchase a standalone Bluray player over the PS3, here in Australia in particular, as I have never seen a bluray player anywhere near the price of the PS3.

try planet earth... there is a difference. But ti's true that a lot of the early HD movies are not that much of a step up. But there are lots of blu rays now that are clearly a step up from DVD.

by the way, it's not a projection tv (like some have in the U.S.), but a HD projector.. Maybe you are talking about the same thing, but there is some confusion now and then.

Yes, HD projector. It even does 1080p through component! It was breathtaking the first time I loaded up some of my 360 games on that thing!

I told him Planet Earth was the best example of HD material, but its hard to convince some people to buy things like that. You know; no exciting car chases, no explosions, no aliens, etc.

However you have a lot of credibility as far as I'm concerned. I personally would love to see Planet Earth in HD, be it HD DVD or Blu-ray or whatever. For regular movies, though, I'm still not convinced HD is worth the price.

Here is my main problem with Blu-ray right now:

I have a 360, I have a Wii. These systems cover my gaming needs beyond my capacity to afford all the games I want!

So the only way the PS3 really fits in is as a Blu-ray player. Blu-ray just isn't worth the current HD premium to me right now. If I really want to see a movie in HD I'll rent it through the 360. Yeah, 360 HD rentals are over-priced, but that extra cost is still reasonable compared to the price of an HD player + the extra cost of HD discs.

I'd like to see things like Planet Earth in HD but that alone isn't enough for me to justify the purchase of an HD player like the PS3.

as far as i'm concerned HD projector is the way to go. the immersion is just unbelievable (i also have HD LCD screens). Even watching photo's is better.. you get sucked back right to the place you shot them.

For regular movies there is still room for improvement, absolutely. for now the biggest difference is in some live recordings and Planet earth. Planet Earth is a must see for your friend. It's a Masterpiece. The effort they put in to make this documentary is UN-freaking-BELIEVABLE. I constantly say: "WTF!?!?!! i didn't know that???!?!? WTH HELL IS THAT!!?!?! HOW DID THEY fim that??!!! HOLEY CRAP!!!??? WOW??!!"

and so is my girlfriend.. even she is convinced true HD is a step up now. :-P

Yeah thats true. Planet Earth would be a certain buy for me. I just worry that once HD DVD is squashed that Blu-ray will remain high in price with no competition. Then again, since Sony is also under pressure to remain competetive in the gaming market with PS3, they will lower the price and keep it reasonable. I hope it will work out that way.

Im getting a PS3 for this reason as well. Also because everything is already in built, its ready for the Blu Ray Live feature which allows you to gain access to extra content via the net. Which you can't do on older Blu Ray players.

...and without a massive price drop, BluRay may never overtake DVDs in sales, so it seems like waiting is the best option.

In any case, if I'm going to adopt the BluRay medium, I'd prefer to be able to make my own Blu-Rays (god, I hate that name!). The PS3 can't burn Blu-Rays, so I'll buy a Blu-Ray reader/writer.

Am I the only one here who can't tell the different between the two with studying them both very closely? I am sorry, but I just don't see Blu-ray as the future...something better will be made considering the small improvement that blu-ray actually has. I have never once thought to myself "Hey I should spend an extra 300 dollars and get a PS3 so I can finally see the godfather with a slightly improved image!!!" To me the level of improvement doesn't =/= the price of the product.

The person responding obviously works for Sony. He sounds like an advertisement.

I already have a PS3, and never planned on getting a stand alone Blu-Ray player. If HD-DVD survived I would get a dual-player if anything. Blu-Ray movies are still too expensive and until it becomes the standard and studios stop producing DVD's, I will continue to purchase DVD movies and play them on my XBox 360 in 1080p upscale format. ;)

All I see people talking about is the image on bluray...the real benefit if you have a surround sound system that can handle it properly is the hi-rez audio, uncompress PCM, DDHD, etc....with good speakers you will see why bluray is the way to go....and if you have real display the difference between 480p DVD and 1080p blurays is night and day

You misunderstand, DVD prices dropped dramitcally with no competition from a next gen format at the time. The competition in prices come from Sony, Sharp, Samsung, Pioneer, etc.. all releasing Blu ray players and all trying to get your money. Just because HD DVD is gone doesnt mean prices wont drop. All those companies still have to compete with eachother and now they will do it more aggressivly because more people will be willing to upgrade without a format war going on.

Blu ray prices are going to continue to drop as well, more demand means more mass produced blu ray disks which eventually leads to lower prices. Not to mention all the movie studios wanting everyone to buy their HD version of their movie as oppossed to their DVD version.

Its really messed up what Sony is doing for those people who plunged on Blu-Ray but didn't buy a PS3. They just now finalized the standards for it and there are hardware requirements that aren't in any v1.0 player. The PS3 can do it because of the cell, but everyone else is basically gonna have to be content with no special features or have to plunk out another $399. Not just that, but they still sell these stand alone players at $399+ with most of them being well over $399. They should drop these things down to HD-DVD prices.

Its kinda sad that the company who just now added tech that the other has had since day one, sells out of spec players at over 2x the price of the competition, and does a real deal screw over of early adopters is the company that looks to have won.

I'll buy a Blu-Ray/PS3 once the price drops low. I'm waiting to see what happens first: PS3 for $250 or stand alone blu-ray for $150.

Yep, I have to agree with you tc. I basically purchased the PS3 because of the Blu-Ray player, and now I get the benefit of playing Motorstorm, Resistance, Uncharted, and Warhawk (a great game btw).

WTF $40!!!!!!!!!!!!! for a movie? Where do you live, so I don't come there. Sheesh, at most, they cost $30 here.

Have fun waiting. While I enjoy my Blu Ray movie player in less than two weeks (although the blu ray player isn't the reason I am getting a PS3).

I really hope you own a projector. Otherwise you would be stupidly rich or have the wrong priorities.
