A leading South African distributor has told MCV that many of the country's major retailers refuse to stock Xbox 360 consoles due to reliability concerns and the infamous Red Ring of Death (RROD).

"The Xbox360 has had a rather rough time in South Africa," Apex Interactive director Quinton Eavie stated. "It has been plagued with an extraordinarily high failure rate on the hardware when it was initially launched, which has seen it been removed from some of the important retail stores in our territory."MCV UK

The above is only an excerpt. You can find the full article here.

This sure sounds like System Wars material to me! What do you guys make of this? South Africa gets rather hot, no? :D

I've had my 360 for three years and a second one for one year and I have yet to get RROD on either. I must have the special editions because everyone else here apparently gets it twice a month.

Africa alone doesnt have that problem, almost all the countires in America have that too. As far as I know, Microsoft only offices are in United States so in the other countries it is quite of hard to have a 360; get a RROD and your 360 is dead for sure. Also, I think that the units with the Jasper chip havent come yet. That is the main reason the ps3 and Wii are dominating the rest of America.

That is true. When I unfortunately still lived in Saudi Arabia, two friends of mine got the RRoD and had to go to 3rd parties and pay to get it fixed even though Microsoft has a presence in the area.

People standing up to RROD!? But we have to just accept it and let MS continue pulling this crap..... lol Anyway this is interesting news. If anything it shows that RROD is as big of a problem as it always was.

I do think people over exaggerate on here. I had RROD twice, both repaired promptly. Since I got my elite I've had no problems. It's even fell over twice and nothing happened at all haha.

A lot of people in Africa (that I know of personally) don't buy an X360 because getting you warranty help you deserve is a pain in Africa. Sure it might work in South Africa, but there are tons of other countries in the SADC region, and practically everyone from that region goes to SA to buy their goods. So if you buy a X360 from SA, move to Mozambique and have it die, you are pretty much sorta screwed. :(

rushed and poor QA can be attributed to this in earlier cases im pretty sure the 360 went into production just 6 weeks before its launch :S bad move no1.Its like basses i tend to avoid anything thats low end by Dean or BC rich like the plague for the reason they are poorly constructed and not well made nor made of the best quality gear compared to say an Ibanez GSR or Squier VM model. So a lot of local shops have stoped stocking them cause of the quality.

maybe the company in SA feel the same with the 360.The diffrence is MS are adressing the problems with their product xD.

And a nice little note is SA doesnt have XBL which could also be showing a sign of protest.

I know people who've bought consoles in the uk and have had them replaced in SA.Powercare, the company in charge of maintenance here, are not that fussy.I got mine replaced without an copy of my invoice.

The Middle East is said to consist of Sony fanboys so I suppose some of that brushes off onto Africa. :P

I can understand. What's the point in selling a failing merchandise? My 360 sounds like it's going to get RRoD soon.

I have never heard of any videogames console in history having problems of this magnitude due to poor manufacturing.

I remember the actual gov't of Australia got involved due to RROD, and now South Africa...it's nuts. People can point to other problems with consoles in the past, this is huge and will be remembered forever in history as the worst by a large margin...until a new record setter enters next gen perhaps.

I myself have been hit by RROD 3 Times, and E74 once, and I actually paid for a trade in and bought a Halo 360 to avoid RROD after RROD #2...which didn't help since I got RROD 13 months later anyways.

It's tricky. I am very careful now, I never leave my 360 to idle, I hardly use it for Netflix, and I never use it for DVD's. It's strictly for games, and I don't play longer than 3 hour sessions. I know the 360's each have a lifespan, but I am doing my best to make sure my current machines last hopefully for the next 5 years. I don't buy multiplats on either of my two 360's anymore (unless it's the best version), and I really go out of my way to baby my two machines.

There will be a time when 360's are NOT covered by warranty in the future, and will not be manufactured anymore (720's will be out, etc.), and I want to make sure I have 360's in that future timeline. THe only way to ensure that is to take precautions NOW. There is no hyperbole in this statement, this is how I am now that I've been hit so much. Everyone may have their own take on RROD / E74 / E errors / Disc scratching, but for those 360 owners paying attention, you've been warned. You have to think of the future.

The last thing I need is two RROD 360's in my closet in 2015 just because I didn't care in 2010 to heed any warnings.

Dont even try it Solid, there were rampant threads last gen about the faulty PS2. Xbox 360 isnt the worst, its probably on par with the PS1, which had even more problems than the PS2. Ive been gaming long enough to remember tthat, and have been on Gamespot forever. We saw the same thing last gen with DRE, OS freezing, ports not working, etc. Saying otherwise would be an attempt to minimize sony's faults to make MS (and 360) look bad. I agree the RROD was bad, and shouldve been prevented, but lets be fair ok.

I'm being more than fair. I'm not talking about SW, I'm talking about the global impact of poor manufacturing on the 360. This is the worst by far and will will be remembered as #1 with a bullet...especially when you factor in the incredibly low install base 360 has compared to PSONe or PS2 or any other console.Think about that. The Xbox 360 is in Year 5, with 40 million sales, and RROD has been a problem since the first month. It's not like 100 million PSOnes or 160 million PS2's, or whatever. We are talking a much smaller community dealing with a much larger problem...and this problem isn't a dust issue, this cripples the machine due to heat. It's not an easy fix either.

I honestly think coming into a thread about South African retailers shunning Xbox 360's and bringing up console problems from other companies could be considered an attempt to minimize faults of the Xbox, to be honest. I don't want to stray away from topic, since this is a 360 topic, but I hope this explains a bit more.

I've been gaming long, long, long enough to live through these gaming era's, and the RROD issue is what it is. As far as my 360 warning above, people better take precautions. I'm not minimizing any faults and I'm not bringing up any companies, this thread is about South African Retail shunning 360, so I'm just keeping it real. I stayed on topic and responded in kind.

If you would like to know, I have had problems with videogaming products throughout my life, but never has it been as bad as my 360 problems. While that's a personal experience, apparently South African retailers agree with my sentiments.Comparing to any other companies is attempting to minimize the destructive wake E74 and RROD has had on consumers, on the plus side, for those that use warranties, the 3 year warranties was pretty nice...another industry first...but it was necessary for a reason.I've had bad PSOnes, broken Xbox's, bad Dreamcasts, DRE PS2, bad Atari 5200, broken NES's, Bad Sega Genesis',...etc, but RROD will be remembered as the worst console problem. That's just how it's going down, I just got to be fair, ok.

Here's my overall message in a nutshell to those gamers out there reading in SW :

Be careful out there guys, don't overuse your 360's. That's my advice to any that are listening.:P

Hawaii? I'm jealous! Sounds like an awesome trip! :D I could use a vacation from all the school-work I'm buried under now. Ends of the year and not a favorite time of mine.
