I have never heard of any videogames console in history having problems of this magnitude due to poor manufacturing.
I remember the actual gov't of Australia got involved due to RROD, and now South Africa...it's nuts. People can point to other problems with consoles in the past, this is huge and will be remembered forever in history as the worst by a large margin...until a new record setter enters next gen perhaps.
I myself have been hit by RROD 3 Times, and E74 once, and I actually paid for a trade in and bought a Halo 360 to avoid RROD after RROD #2...which didn't help since I got RROD 13 months later anyways.
It's tricky. I am very careful now, I never leave my 360 to idle, I hardly use it for Netflix, and I never use it for DVD's. It's strictly for games, and I don't play longer than 3 hour sessions. I know the 360's each have a lifespan, but I am doing my best to make sure my current machines last hopefully for the next 5 years. I don't buy multiplats on either of my two 360's anymore (unless it's the best version), and I really go out of my way to baby my two machines.
There will be a time when 360's are NOT covered by warranty in the future, and will not be manufactured anymore (720's will be out, etc.), and I want to make sure I have 360's in that future timeline. THe only way to ensure that is to take precautions NOW. This is no hyperbole in this, this is how I am now that I've been hit so much. Everyone may have their own take, but for those paying attention, you've been warned. You have to think of the future.
The last thing I need is two RROD 360's in my closet in 2015 just because I didn't care in 2010 to heed any warnings.

Dont even try it Solid, there were rampant threads last gen about the faulty PS2. Xbox 360 isnt the worst, its probably on par with the PS1, which had even more problems than the PS2. Ive been gaming long enough to remember tthat, and have been on Gamespot forever. We saw the same thing last gen with DRE, OS freezing, ports not working, etc. Saying otherwise would be an attempt to minimize sony's faults to make MS (and 360) look bad. I agree the RROD was bad, and shouldve been prevented, but lets be fair ok.I'm being more than fair. I'm not talking about SW, I'm talking about the global impact of poor manufacturing on the 360. This is the worst by far and will will be remembered as #1 with a bullet...especially when you factor in the incredibly low install base 360 has compared to PSONe or PS2 or any other console.Think about that. The Xbox 360 is in Year 5, with 40 million sales, and RROD has been a problem since the first month. It's not like 100 million PSOnes or 160 million PS2's, or whatever. We are talking a much smaller community dealing with a much larger problem...and this problem isn't a dust issue, this cripples the machine due to heat. It's not an easy fix either.
I honestly think coming into a thread about South African retailers shunning Xbox 360's and bringing up console problems from other companies could be considered an attempt to minimize faults of the Xbox, to be honest. I don't want to stray away from topic, since this is a 360 topic, but I hope this explains a bit more.
I've been gaming long, long, long enough to live through these gaming era's, and the RROD issue is what it is. As far as my 360 warning above, people better take precautions. I'm not minimizing any faults and I'm not bringing up any companies, this thread is about South African Retail shunning 360, so I'm just keeping it real. I stayed on topic and responded in kind.
If you would like to know, I have had problems with videogaming products throughout my life, but never has it been as bad as my 360 problems. While that's a personal experience, apparently South African retailers agree with my sentiments.Comparing to any other companies is attempting to minimize the destructive wake E74 and RROD has had on consumers, on the plus side, for those that use warranties, the 3 year warranties was pretty nice...another industry first...but it was necessary for a reason.I've had bad PSOnes, broken Xbox's, bad Dreamcasts, DRE PS2, bad Atari 5200, broken NES's, Bad Sega Genesis',...etc, but RROD will be remembered as the worst console problem. That's just how it's going down, I just got to be fair, ok.
Here's my overall message in a nutshell to those gamers out there reading in SW :
Be careful out there guys, don't overuse your 360's. That's my advice to any that are listening.:P
