You might say "well its simple, just dont buy the maps" but no its actually not that simple. I mean who the hell does microsoft think they are, first they release the "Elite" which gives us 360 owners the shaft that already have the premium model, then the faulty consoles that keep breaking and keep breaking that keep having to get sent back and repaired, and they charge for Halo 2 maps, they charge for maps for a LAST GEN XBOX GAME! I mean come on, when will enough be enough?! But hey, cant say I blame microsoft that much though, I mean afterall SOMEBODY has to pay for shipping and repairing those broken 360s, just to bad it has to be the consumer

Don't get me wrong, I love Gears of war and its one of my favorite games of all time and I play it on a daily basis, but come on, charging $10.00 more dollars for a few more maps! WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO, having to pay for extra levels lmao i mean seriously, i dont care how much you love gears and MS you have to admit this is ridicolous. All I know is this and this is coming straight from a 360 owner, and that is MS better clean up their act with these faulty consoles and charging for extra levels because it can really come back and haunt them once the PS3's heavy hitting games come out later this year, the 360 sales have already dropped dramatically. Heck I was even thinking about buying the elite but then I thought to myself since my 360 is working perfectly and hastn broke (yet) im just going to stick with it.. Why take the chance

Yeah it is ridicolous, epic was going to release it for free but the greedy MicroSoft told them they can`t as I heard.

Hopefully most people won't buy them, so there's more servers to play on for those who haven't gotten the map pack.

Yes, because we all know it costs nothing to develop multiplayer maps...

Of course the price for maps can be too much, but not every developer is generous enough to make some more maps and give them away like a christmas present. Also, this is not new or something. Paying for maps has been around. (I know, not with PC).

Yup. I feel like xboxlive is beeing flooded with content you have to pay for.

Soon we will probably have to pay for demos and game trailers aswell.

When that day comes, I will quit console gaming.

I agree we shouldn't just all buy everything that comes our way. Xbox live has some outrageous prices for downloadable content, and if these maps will turn out to cost 10 dollars or something that's definately too pricey. I'd say something like 6 dollars should be maximum. That would also be worth it.

If you look from the developer's point of view, the demo and trailers will later pay back because it can get more people to buy the game. In the end they will probably make profit from the demo, because they usually have a part of the game as demo.

The developer WAS generous to offer it for free, but MS won't let Epic do it.  Not yet that is.

I'm pretty sure there were other factors involved before you came to that decision.  Downloadable content isn't that huge of an issue.

So would you not mind paying $100 for a game up front if it had a lot of maps? I doubt it because you wouldn't look at it the same way.... these maps are relatively cheap but it adds up to a lot more money spent for "extras" that couldn've easily been included or given free (maps cost almost nothing to make). $20 expansion packs for PC games generally add large single player portions, new items, and more multiplayer maps. Charging anything more than pennies for basic maps is just ripping off consumers, period.

Either pay up or stop moaning and wait until September when they are free. You got what you payed for, Gears of war.

Why should everything after that be free?. Last time I checked things cost money.

The point it is that it doesn't cost anything to make maps, doesn't depend on who's making them.

I think it's related to the fact that the people who made the maps wanted to do so at no charge, while MS who weren't involved are trying to make a buck off of it.  Epic is not pleased at all.

This isn't about the developers not getting paid.

Yeah, according to epic on the 1up show, PC will have booster packs just like all the rest in the series. It's soley up to MS if they are going to charge for maps, which I beleive the guys at Epic voiced a strong disagreement in charging for extra content, as their philosophy is to give back to the community. But, they said MS can do whatever they want as it's their online system, I just hope people realize that this isn't the way Epic treats their fans, they are one of the best dev's out there, and more companies should model themselves after them.

you make a lot of assumptions...

1. you still haven't provided any proof that MS is forcing epic to charge.

2. paying for maps (xbox live) is better than paying for virtual clothes and furniture (PSN Home)...

3. MS gave away 98% free content last gen on xbox live... someone had to pay for the work.  Yep, MS did...  where were you thanking them for that..?  ;)

your bias is too great to be ignored.

wow i just love your logic btw. so your telling me for the past 10-11 years that i have been a loyal fan of Unreal series and never been charged for BONUS PACKS THAT EPIC MADE ( not player made btw) but once MS publish a game taht epic makes its a OK to charge? even thougth EPIC STATED THEY WANTED TO GIVE THEM OUT FOR FREE? but MS FEELS DIFFERENTLY?

i guess you forgot, EPic is   are the one who stated they wants to give gears of war maps for free. if you really think it cost LOTS of money to make  for 3 maps for a game they already finsished and just add content to .  th en yah no point in agruing with you any more. but all i know is, im going to laugh when UT comes out for all 3 gameing systems, and the 360 gamers are the only one being charged for maps. but then again lemmings will spin that and try to damage control that also.

you make a lot of assumptions...

1. you still haven't provided any proof that MS is forcing epic to charge.

2. paying for maps (xbox live) is better than paying for virtual clothes and furniture (PSN Home)...

3. MS gave away 98% free content last gen on xbox live... someone had to pay for the work.  Yep, MS did...  where were you thanking them for that..?  ;)

your bias is too great to be ignored.

Epic wants to release it for free, this is common knowledge and has been known for a long time.  They are being forced to sell it until later this fall.

Yes, because we all know it costs nothing to develop multiplayer maps...

Of course the price for maps can be too much, but not every developer is generous enough to make some more maps and give them away like a christmas present. Also, this is not new or something. Paying for maps has been around. (I know, not with PC).

tango90101

It costs money to release demos and make game trailers too. Should they charge for them?

If you look from the developer's point of view, the demo and trailers will later pay back because it can get more people to buy the game. In the end they will probably make profit from the demo, because they usually have a part of the game as demo.

5mill gears of war sold at 59.99 paid it self off, do you know much money that is? taht is why epic wants to give out maps for free, its MS who wants to be greedy . im just glad Unreal Tornament is not published by MS. so when i get it for the pc i wont be charged for maps that Epic always give out for free. I wonder if PS3 gamers will get maps for free, its going to be said for 360 gamers though. MS will charge them for maps for Unreal Tornament also.

The way I see it people work hard putting those maps together and $10.00 isn't much considering cellphones charge just the same for crappy games.  Dont buy plain and simple

Wow i just love your logic btw. so your telling me for the past 10-11 years that i have been a loyal fan of Unreal series and never been charged for BONUS PACKS THAT EPIC MADE ( not player made btw) but once MS publish a game taht epic makes its a OK to charge? even thougth EPIC STATED THEY WANTED TO GIVE THEM OUT FOR FREE? but MS FEELS DIFFERENTLY?

i guess you forgot, EPic is   are the one who stated they wants to give gears of war maps for free. if you really think it cost LOTS of money to make  for 3 maps for a game they already finsished and just add content to .  th en yah no point in agruing with you any more. but all i know is, im going to laugh when UT comes out for all 3 gameing systems, and the 360 gamers are the only one being charged for maps. but then again lemmings will spin that and try to damage control that also.

alfy13

I only said it was right if a developer that made a game that didn't sell well released content and charged for it. I'm not supporting M$ in the Epic downloadable content here, I'm only supporting developers that could use the money they spent from making maps for other things.

I'll just quote myself from the post you responded to: "Yeah, it's not like I approve of what M$ is doing too."

Or did you not read my post?

Sorry... but I thought I should bring this up.

No correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the budget for Gears around the $10 million mark? And did the game not sell more than a million copies? Now simple math would dictate that even by selling 1 million copies of the game at $60 USD a pop they already have made back $50 million in profit...

Just thought I would bring it up. ;)

that'll teach ms...

funny thing is; if they wanted to charge but MS didn't let them, they'd be screaming bloody murder...

ps...don't believe everything you hear... saying they don't want money is one thing; REALLY not wanting money is another....

epic  and gaming is a business, kiddies... biz is for making money...;)

So are you implying that their be some sort of Cap on their bottom line?  $10 million to develop...But take into account Marketing dollars ( Commercials, Movie theather ad space, magazines, etc domestically and over seas and we are looking at some serious backing microsoft put behind this game. Would I love for it to be cheaper/free...sure.  But this is Microsofts IP and Epic has no say.  Like I said ,games on cellphones run about $10 a pop....Personally I think the maps should have been $6 tops.

If you ask me, paying for maps, armour, special items, is ALL insane.  People buying this crap only encourages developers to offer LESS to people paying full price for a game and instead, offer MORE downloadable crap for a price.
