Spider-Man: Miles Morales is underperforming! Should Sony fans be worried?

Spider-Man: Miles Morales sold 663K digital units across PlayStation 4 and 5. Sales of the Sony-published title did not compare to the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man in September 2018 (2.2M).

The Spider-Man: Miles Morales game didn't even make it into the top ten for the month of November, and according to the charts, sold less than Marvel's Avengers, which is a disaster as well, as Marvel's Avengers is confirmed to be losing money and players are leaving in droves, so just imagine how bad it must be for the Miles Morales game.

Can't say I'm shocked by this really despite I'm a Marvel fanboy/Spider-Man. Miles Morales was overpriced, largely marketed for the PS5, and basically a standalone expansion, not a true sequel from Spider-Man PS4. Despite PS4 expansion exist, it was heavily hyped for PS5 in terms of showing its visual which is fine, but also could be the fact PS5 is hard to find as of now. I intend to get it when the price reflects the length of $30, not paying $50 on PS4/PS5.

I've not bought it yet due to not having a PS5... Not bothering with it on the Pro. I can see limited PS5 stock being an issue, as some people may want to wait. Still, the fact it's cross-gen and still underperforming does suck.

IMO, Miles should have received his own standalone game, rather than an expansion with half the playtime. Shit, they could work toward a Spider-Verse game if done well enough.

Is this only factoring in digital sales? Also, does the digital PS5 come in two versions like the physical? Since the $70 version that comes with Spider-Man Remastered is a different SKU than the standard $50 edition, I imagine this is separating some of the sales a bit.

Side bar, I just started MM last night. It is quite good.

Yeah, the marketing for Miles Morales seemed a bit confused. Is it a whole new game or an expansion pack? Do you have to buy the Spider-man remaster with it, or is it standalone? Is it a big, full-blooded game like Spider-man, or is it a small spin-off you finish in a day? Is it a PS5 exclusive, or can you get it on the PS4 as well? I didn't even know the answer to that last one until SkillUp mentioned it in his review.

Also, replacing Spider-man's face model with that of a supermarket-brand Tom Holland knock-off probably didn't help.

Well they are selling dlc as a full game.

I’m kind of surprised but also not really. It seems to me that they probably should have priced it lower as a stand-alone expansion type game. Also for me personally while I am a Spider-Man fan I’m a Peter Parker Spider-Man fan and the Miles Morales character isn’t really a big draw for me so perhaps others feel the same.

The game was introduced too soon after the first Spiderman. There was also the initial thought that this would be a 1/2 price game due to it being almost like a Spiderman 1.5 or the Miles Morales DLC.

Lots of people got for Christmas and, it'll have a good attachment rate for anyone who buys a PS5 for a while.

Have a PS5, not getting it till it's around $30. I'm not paying full price for a game that takes 16 hours to clock (do people still say clock for 100%?)

Most people i feel wont buy it until they have PS5. it looks like an expansion and not worth the full price. I hear its short.

$70 DLC multiplat, plus scalpers have many PS5 systems in hostage negotiations at the moment.

PS5 console scalpers don’t buy games. I would guess it would slightly underperform anyway.

I would have bought Valhalla as my lone PS5 game. I would probably stay away from MM even priced cheaply or maybe not.

I kinda feel like I got my Spider-Man fix for a while..may pick up the complete edition down the road.

I dunno. I bought the ultimate edition mostly to just play Spider-Man Remastered. I plan on playing Miles Morales but I want to play Spider-Man again. And goddamn, I tried the fidelity mode to see what the fuss was about, and turned it to performance immediately. I don't even think it was 30fps.

Blame the scalpers, why should we buy the game if we don't have the console...

I'm not that surprised ... i want to play the game, but i feel is overpriced ... gonna wait for a sale to get it, which to be fair, won't take much.

Physical copies are sold out everywhere for the PS4 version. I checked Gamestop, Walmart, Target and was forced to order it from Amazon. Also, they're only talking about digi sales. I think it'll be wise to wait until all of the numbers are out before deeming it a failure or a success.

There does seem to be some confusion about the game. I'll most probably get it on PS4 after a price drop, there's the added bonus of owning the PS5 version as well with the same purchase... if I end up getting a PS5.

I love spiderman on ps4, but have no interest at all on MM.

I think this is the first time i agree with your ass. There's no excuse for such a huge franchise and it being on the ps4.

What? This doesn't make sense. If you loved the one on the ps4, and this one is essentially the same thing with a new story, how is it that you know for a fact that you won't play it?

The game feels like DLC. The game is overpriced. The game is just not that good.

I am not suprised by its sales, and nor should Sony be.

Was to be expected, don't think Sony is too worried as it was a lot cheaper to make as well. Game did get way less marketing and they plundered it pretty hard as well

Surprising in a way, because I expect SM games to be blockbusters. Not really surprising because SM falls under a type of Sony game that after the hype dies and the game is judged on its own merits much of the conversation shifts from "best thing ever" to "it's ok not great".

So there's three modes? So i am guessing its ultra low res RT (720p?) in 60fps? I didn't see this.

I've also seen some streamers that were loving the hell of the original, and were almost forcing themselves to beat MM. The game is obviously mediocre. Could've been an MS exclusive and nobody would've noticed because that's as good as it gets on the green side 😊

Agree with the reasons you give in the OP. I wonder how it will affect the next proper Spiderman game? They need to show something special for that one.

I suspected this would be the case, especially after the complicated next gen upgrade the decided to go with.

Also, who wants to play the gimped PS4 version when you can wait and play it properly?

PS4 and Xbox One were terrible console in terms of hardware.

Other than the obvious (being overpriced) Spiderman was a game for casuals, and since most casuals don't know who Miles Morales is, they might need something called "Spiderman 2" before parting with their money.

PS5s are supply constrained so...

well with a PS4 user base of 110M+ as well as the PS5 launch you would think it would have a lot more. This is poor no matter how many excuses are made.

Well it's not my fault. I don't buy any of the superhero stuff. Not my thing.

Perhaps Sony pulled a Wii-U. Is it a new game? Expansion? PS4 or PS5? Of course, I know the answers to these questions - but I also frequent GS forums. Go figure.

After taking into considerations, I'll totally wait until I get myself a PS5 in order to play it properly. Plus, I'm sure MM will be on sale by the time I pick up PS5 like a year or two.

Then it would be a marketing issue and not a PS5 supply constraint problem. Still there are 110M+ PS4 user base that was well aware the game was available for that system. Piss poor sales are piss poor sales.

Just to be clear, I don't care about sales since it doesn't directly benefit me or my family.
