Poll Splatoon, shooter of the year? (82 votes)
So, Splatoon was just declared shooter of the year. Do you agree?

It looks like a fun game I would get bored of after 5 hours. I prefer shooters to be a little more competitive and actually let me talk to my friends Halo 5 and Rainbow Six Siege are my favorite shooters this year
How is splatoon less competitive?
I'm going to let it slide this time Loco, but usually you would include your thoughts in the OP as well when you create a thread like this.
It's a fresh spin on the genre, and I would give it the benefit of the doubt because it looks like it's the only remotely interesting shooter this year.
Absolutely. It's bullshit early access release and the fact that it's missing the most basic of features a multiplayer game should have is ridiculous, and the campaign is mediocre at best. But, the mechanics themselves are really well thought out, there is a cool learning curve to it. The game strikes a nice balance between casual play with a mode like turf war, while having some really well thought out ranked play. I wouldn't put it in the same company of a proper arena shooter, largely because any game where you have perks and gear is fundamentally lame to me, but Nintendo's level design chops in the form of mp maps is as usual world class. Whoever does the audio work at that company is a fucking god, a lot of credit was given to Dice this year for nailing Star Wars. Which to me is unimpressive, because I can't think of the last Star Wars game that didn't get the audio design of Star Wars. But Splatoon's little noises, like the way those things dive into the ink sounds so fucking good, that you imagine some poor sap had to work slave hours to get the perfect sound for that.
It's got some aspects I'm not the biggest fan of, but when the gameplay clicks with you it's a good reminder of how absurdly talented people at Nintendo are. It's also a great argument for why that company should do new shit. If the Animal Crossing team can go from a mortgage simulator to this, one can only imagine what Miyamoto, Sakamoto, Aunoma, Sakurai, Retro, Intelligent Systems, and Monolith could do with fresh new console ips.
Otherwise unless someone was arguing for Halo 5, or some shmup I guess (I guess technically Hell Divers is a shooter, so that as well), Splatoon didn't have a lot of competition. The shooters this year are garbage.
@loco145: the fact that you can't even communicate with your team makes it less competitive than a standard shooter by default.
And hear racist, homophobic or misogynistic stuff? No thanks.
Ignorance sunshine, but the ability to talk to your friends and communicate with them is also an option. One we've had since gen 6.
I'd say easily. The gameplay and mechanics are outstanding. There's techniques to improve yourself with and there is always more to learn. Its insane once you start mastering the controls. This game is as close as possible to KB/M controls thanks to the gamepad.
Plus no Aim Assist. You shoot what you aim at.
The poll options are too black and white for me, but it's a really solid shooter. Just need some friends to make a squid squad. :(
I haven't played splatoon, but I would like to.. and from what I've seen, it isn't an unimaginative, cookie cutter shooter.
Just need some friends to make a squid squad. :(
Likewise, I don't have much friends on my list and they hardly ever play.
Then again, it's been about a few weeks since I last played myself. Super Mario Maker got in the way.
I adore Splatoon. Can't remember the last time I had so much fun in a shooter. I keep playing it too, it's kept fresh (har har har) by a constant stream and rotation of content.
I take it they excluded Rainbow Six Siege since it just came out. but maybe platoon really if that good haven't played it if my niece gets it for her WiiU I will try it out.

I would play with you, but after how it turned out the last time we played together, I'm never doing that again >.>
@charizard1605: Wooooow. Wow. I defend your honor and this is how you repay me? Just because you can't beat me at turf war doesn't mean we can still play together. ;P
@charizard1605: Gladly be up for a game some time char. Not tried the new level out yet but will in he next hour.
I won't be playing today, but tomorrow maybe?

@CountBleck12: Yeah I miss out on a lot of opportunities to play with others, truth be told, but the Smash tourney too, did anyone actually play beyond one day? Makes me sad to think about it. ;(

I think the tourney went through the month at least
@charizard1605: oops, major typo. Meant can't not can. Sorry now I feel like a huge dick lol
;__;
@charizard1605: stooooop. I said sorry. What more do you want of me?! I'm only humaaan.
Plus I got like 4 hours of sleep... Not that excuses much buuuut...

Lose to me for the next ten games of Splatoon we play together, and I might forgive you.
@charizard1605: I suppose sacrifices must be made to earn your love. Only if we play Splat Zones. ;)
Splatoon is awesome, still going strong after 7 months. Its my GOTY from what ive played, i enjoy jumping back into after games. Will be focusing on Xenoblade Chronicles X, but after that, will be back to Splatooning. I got my brother a copy for Christmas too whe it was on the cheap.
Halo 5 obviously, Splatoon is the flavor of the month and it gets old quickly regardless of its charms, especially with no communication.
Flavor of the month? Are you seriously saying that for a game that released in May, and has continued to sell since then, and have a strong community, thanks to constant free content, great reviews, and highly positive word of mouth? If anything, the flavor of the month sentiment applies to the far more recent Halo 5- for all we know, Halo 5 doesn't have the longevity that Splatoon has already exhibited (I am not saying it won't, but I am reminding you a game that has gone on strong for seven months now is hardly the 'flavor of the month').
lol man, you would think... well, actually, I'm not sure you would, never mind.
It was a shit year for shooters, but Splatoon deserves the win. It's a great game, some caveats aside.
You should play with us some time :-3
@charizard1605: how many people still play splatoon? I heard it's mostly Japanese gamers left. Apparently that game sold poorly outside Japan.
It's sold 2.5 million copies worldwide, only 600,000 of it in Japan. So no, you heard wrong.
And nope, it's a healthy mix of Japanese players and western players in the game, depending on what time you log on at, obviously. You do admittedly see more Japanese players online in Splatoon than you do in other shooters, but that makes sense because the game sold more in Japan than other shooters too.
Definitely the best multiplayer shooter of the year... which would've been almost unthinkable for a Nintendo game, yet Nintendo somehow managed to pull it off.
But my favourite single-player shooter of the year, however, is the 2D bullet-hell shmup, Mushihimesama.
@mems_1224: any time I go on I have to wait max 30 seconds in a lobby to get a game. Japanese players are only really online in their evening time.
So that's definately inaccurate.
@mems_1224 Yep, at least half every match is filled with Japanese. My 9 year old keeps complaining about it.

Splatoon has been the flavor of the month every month since May, you're not wrong.

It's a quirky and fun casual experience once in a while but that's about as far as things go. I don't know if I'm too ingrained in the PC multiplayer experience but no communication in a multiplayer game, especially a shooter, just completely kills its longevity and interest.
When you're playing with people and can't talk to them they lose their humanity, they might as well be bots, they're a faceless, soulless nothing. On top of this there's no communication for strategy or calling during matches, it's just a disorganized mess of everyone doing whatever not knowing what anybody else is doing. Even further beyond that is without communication you can't get to know anyone and find out if they would be a good fit for your friends lists or someone you want to play with in the future...
It's a social game completely devoid of any social interaction, that's not fun, that's reason to stop playing entirely...
Well, it is mechanically more sound then most FPS games we got this year, which did we even get? Closest competitor would be Halo 5 I think. And make no mistake Halo 5 is not a badly crafted game.
I would have issue claiming Platoon as the best Shooter of the year.
I just loathe controller input in most shooters, but even I have to admit that it a very VERY mechanically sound shooter.
