Well, wasn't this going to be an illegal remake?

I'm not defending S-E here but it's not like they have done anything really horribly.

They have the right t control their properties and not allow things like this to be released. It's well within their rights.

JLF1

It wasn't a remake, it was a completely new fanbased chrono game. The only part that I think is horrible that the game has been in development for 5 years and would have been completed next month and now SE decides to stop it. I don't see what is the problem, the game is only a emulator and would not be sold. I would be thrilled if someone took that much time to create a fanmade game. It is pretty much like someone making a story/mod for Neverwinter Nights 2 and Obsidian pulling the plug on it because it is using Neverwinter Nights.

""Crimson Echoes, while technically a new game, was created by lifting images and objects from an original Chrono Trigger ROM file. Unsurprisingly, this upset the team of lawyers at the Final Fantasy creator.

Characterizing CT:CE as a "deliberate and willful" act of copyright violation, the letter (PDF) demands that its creators "immediately remove, take down, delete and destroy all work on the project."

What what if they refuse to comply? Square Enix's legal team also casually notes that the damages for this kind of infringement are "up to $150,000 per work."""

It's not like SE did it just to piss fans off..

Well you honestly think they would loose anything if someone released this fan made rom file for free? Yes yes, copyright this and that but...there isnt even potential money at stake here.

Exactly, it is like I stated earlier. This is just like releasing a story mod for games like NWN.

This news is a few years old.

We're probably now hearing about the end result, but I read about SE suing this fanmade project years ago in an issue of EGM. Regardless of how awesome an updated Version would of been, this is clearly illegal.

Instead of being angry at Square how about this dev team make their own game instead of- "Crimson Echoes, while technically a new game, was created by lifting images and objects from an original Chrono Trigger ROM file" It is the same thing when music stars do not like their music either covered or sampled without their permission.

Yeah, no one said they don't have the right to do it, but when someone puts in that much effort for a free project, its just depressing they would stop them, even if I probably wouldn't play it, I AM pissed at SE for canceling that awesome looking 3D CT remake... in neither case does SE lose anything, they are literally just doing it to be jerks.

the game didn't look that great, but i don't agree with how SE dealt with the matter - it really puts them in a bad light; makes them seem even more distant and somewhat cruel in a way.

No, this news is a few days old... This isn't the first fanmade project to receive a C & D from SE... you're referring to Chrono Trigger Resurrection, which was supposed to be a 3-D remake of CT, this is referring to Crimson Echoes, which would've taken place directly after CT...

This is different, did you read the letter that SE wrote in the link? They state if they do not remove and cease everything relating to the game they will follow up with legal action.

Yes they would because more fans would follow and make their own games. And because they are free then those fans would get the fan made games over Square real titles.

Game looked really interesting. I don't know, if SE is so adamant about not letting fans make a new CT project, why doesn't SE make one themselves? SE is busy with Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII collection, but come on - fans have been asking for a new Chrono game ever since 2000. Not a remake like CT on the DS.

Your probably one of them guys who hates all numbered FF games after 6 for know good reason as well im guessing.

I need to think up a name for elitist FF players.

Oh and it is there IP as well so give them a break, why dont you go and remake Halo CE or anyother popular game without permission and see what happens.

This is the new Square the square that was brainwashed by EA into releaseing inane ports, inane remakes, and rererereleasing their games and crushing any talented spirit that even thinks of using square properties.

This is one of the reasons I hate square now.

Stolen? It was to be release for free not to mention that Square Enix would be credited for everything plus that most likely the majority of the players would be CT fans to begin with and they know Square developed and owns CT.

I don't know how someone could get mad at someone else for protecting their porperty. How dare they not let someone steal from them and give it away. I don't think it is a slap in the face nor a suprise that they would shut it down.

I certainly know square would have been a hell of a lot nicer and maybe even let them release it or promoted it or something, It was fans taking something they love and making something new with all benefit going to square and not to them selves, Square changed when it joined with EA in the first part of ps1 releases they started rerererererereleaseing games, comming down on any one working on any thing to do with their properties and all around producing crap.

What is funny is that the company I work for has a video that I must watch every year that warns of what something like this could do to a company. It does not matter if they are giving it away for free it is still stealing. Why you ask? Well because if Square does not stop this one from being made than other will follow. So many other that many may even be made better than Square makes their own games. That some people will stop buying the real games and just download them for free.

I understand how you a fan want this game. But it is wrong and only a fool would have started down a process to make the game to begin with. If they want to make a game so bad then they should make their own IP and not steal from others.

Perhaps they think that if a new Chrono game is available for free it would discourage people from paying for games that SE puts out. Not another Chrono game, should they ever make one, but I can see gamers opting for a free fan game over paying $60 for a new SE RPG from another franchise. Still, when people put that much work into something solely because they loved the original game so much, it reeks when they get shut down like that. I hope one of them holds onto a backup copy of the work, even if they never finish it. It'd be a real shame to destroy the work completely.

There is nothing wrong with a remake of a game in fact any fan of a game should be happy when a remake is made. It gets more people into the title which you enjoy and it takes nothing away from that company making a good game. Most remakes are down with C or D level programers which you would not want making your game anyways.

The fact that Square is now with EPIC not EA would change nothing. These people wanted to use Square's IP to make a game. If they want to make a game so bad then they should have came up with their own story and went from their. Not steal a story from someone else.

Give them a break. If I was in the same position, I would have done the same. Only $150,000, I would have upped that price. There just doing what anyother company in that position would have done. When comes down to the legal issues then its totally understandable.

If you think about it, I would take it even farther. All the heart and soul put into CT and CC, all the sweat, years by the teams involved in the projects,..... yeah I would be pissed if I was even them.
