its not that i have a problem with there games or anything (ive actually never really played one of there games for very long) its just that final fantasy and dragon quest games are the only games they make. Recently in nintendo power they had an article about the upcoming wii and ds games from squeenix, there were about 10. Every single one of those games except for "its a wonderful world" was a final fantasy or dragon quest game. If i worked there i would be tired of making games in those series and just want to make something original for a change. They make so many spinnoffs and crap that if they continue like this there will be just as many final fantasy and dragon quest games as there are mario games. Does anyone else agree with me and think they should try something original for a change.

Why do people assume Final Fantasy is the same game with sequels or something? Every game (in the main series at least) is unique; new battle system, new character cast, new story, new location, etc. The only thing that really stays the same is the fact that it's a JRPG style. And even that is slowly changing as SE experiments with new styles of gameplay in their titles. I think SE has done a great job of making each new FF different and unique from past FF's.

They make good games, but they do need to stretch further from all the FF and DQ games they make (they are not bad series but they need to make new IPs and resurrect some of their older series). I'd like to see Its a Wonderful World stretch out over to the Wii and they need to resurrect Chrono Trigger.

While I have to agree with you on the fact that there are many remakes and spin offs, I have to say that I enjoy them. The Tactics series is arguably better than the main series. For me and other younger gamers, the remakes are a way for us to play the older games so we know how the series got to where it is today. I believe that some games are unneeded and unwanted however. The FF MMO's? They were horrible. Other spin offs, such as the DS game Rocket Slime (I don't remember the whole name) ,were just attempts to make some quick cash. I'm not saying that there are too many of them but rather that there are too little quality games among these. I'm talking 20+ hours of gameplay, not a game I can finish in one weekend.

I'll agree with your sentiments here, Square is making foolish choices when it comes to game publishing. Whether it's refusing to bring Final Fantasy main games to a multiplatform audience, refusing to put a Square-Enix game with a deep storyline and complex gameplay on the Wii, or relying on Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest when they have the talent to produce something better

I don't know, Square-Enix seems inflexible about finding a middle ground between "it's a final fantasy, the level up and stat system will make you cringe and beg for FF6 back..." and "it's crystal chronicles, we thought not being able to walk around freely would make the game more fun".

Actually wait, I think I've just hit on something... Square-Enix basically enjoys putting sadistic gameplay elements into games. What's the middle ground between pointless complexity and cruel simplicity?

I do remember a day when you looked back at Squaresoft and saw one Final Fantasy game that was hotly anticipated, and about 20 other games that weren't as anticipated, but still released to critical acclaim.

Nowadays, I see about 8 Final Fantasy games, 3 Dragon Quest games, and Last Remnant...I'm sure there are more, but Square's too busy promoting Final Fantasy to get those other titles into the public's eye.

actually all Final Fantasy's are basically different games with different stories and characters and all.

and the same as Mario games. just because they have a great fanchise doesn't mean they keep making the same games over and over again.

Besides, Square-Enix owns Quest, who made Ogre Battle 64. There's one franchise they could make a sequal to.

FF 12 was meh.

"A pale shadow of what they once were". That's exactly how I would put it when it comes to Square and the FF series.

Final Fantasy 12 while looked great wasn't one of their best offerings I felt. The combat system while interesting felt like it was a better idea on paper then in actual presentation. Final Fantasy X was a better offering then Final Fantasy 12 and really I'm not that huge of a FFX fan. I only really enjoyed FF12 due to it's world setting which connects it with Final Fantasy Tactics series of games.

True FF and DQ aren't the only games they make they do make up a bulk of them. While each FF game is different, have been playing FF since FF1 on the NES, they are still very similar after a while. For all the changes between the games there are still a lot that is kept in to make the games "Final Fantasy" games and not come off as generic rpg or Final Fantasy in name only. There is more to a Final Fantasy game then simply being called one. The similarities between the games is what makes you a fan of the series I think, you know what you are getting into as each new game comes out. Still I don't think Square or the games are as great as they used to be.

I think, at least for me, the change came when they started turning away from the fantasy elements of the series and started embracing more scifi settings. Now I love scifi settings however that's why I liked their other series more. Xenogears for example was great because it was so different from Final Fantasy in terms of tone, elements, etc. Not making a sequel when they had the chance was a big mistake I felt on their part. Square I think is forgetting one key part of the franchise, the fantasy in Final Fantasy. Honestly I don't even think FF13 should be called a Final Fantasy game just going by a pure visual opinion of the game. Storywise, what it also sounds like it shouldn't be called it. I'd feel much better about the whole thing if it and it's spin offs were a new IP cause it's sounding like FF in name which is a problem. Lord knows they need a new one.

Like everything there is a rise and fall and I think Square needs to have a big fall before it becomes great again. Nintendo had its and that was also in part due to the crap Square themselves pulled when it came to other developers when they jumped to Sony which directly affected their 3rd party support on the N64. Which I think might happen to a degree due to the sales of the PS3. They will be hurting a lot due to these new games if they don't sell extremely well.

I'm pretty satisfied with the Final Fantasy franchise. I love the FF universe, and I may never grow tired of it. SE should refrain from making games like The Bouncer and Driving Emotion Type S if they're going to try something new though.

Personally I'm a little tired of all the spin offs they have been making lately. I mean theres like what 4 or 5 FFXIII games coming out in the future right? Yeah.. Seems like they are really milkin the francise all they can. Sure people don't have to buy those spin-off games, I know I won't. I'll just stick with the main games. Thing is though I'm a little worried about how polished the main FFXIII will be with them working on so many games at the same time. I just wish the FF team would focus on FFXIII and put all their effort and work into it alone so when it finally comes out it will be a truely amazing game. Then after working on that they should go straight to work on making the next title FFXIV just like the old days. FFVII in '97, FFVIII in '99, etc. No huge wait for the next title and all of the FF's up to FFX were great games IMO. After that the games just seem to have gone a little down hill IMO. And I kinda think it is due to all the spin offs they've been workin on. I mean if they were'nt spending time and resourses on making FFX-2 and all the expansions they make for FFXI and many other games, I truely believe FFXII would have been a better game. Not that FFXII was bad, it just isnt as good as the FF's of old. Sorry for the rant, thats just how I see it.

Square Enix is bad at making new stuff, and old stuff, and stuff in general.  The only series that I have any respect for is the Mana series, and they are doing a right good job at making it suck.  People still buy it though, even though they don't care about their customers in the slightest.

lol, kind of reminds me of Nintendo. Every other game is a mario game. Funny how that works.....you have a big franchise, you exploit for everything that it's worth. What is there Mario Party, Mario Galaxies, mario fighting, Mario bowling, Mario Golf, Mario Soccer, Paper Mario, ect..... Heck I just saw a new one releasing in Nov, Mario olympics.

Point is, ifsomeone has a tremendous franchise.......they are going to milk it for everything they can.

TC you're sooooo right, I meaan you'd have thought by final fantasy 9 they would have gotten tired of making games about Tidus and Yuna but then they made X and XII. and now tidus and yuna are back in XIII.

Seriously if i was tetsuya nomura's boss he'd be sooooo fired. Who makes a linearINTERCONNECTED series that goes all the way up to XIII and beyond with the same characters and same story. If i was them i would makeeach final fantasy have a different set of characters and different storylines so it'd be fresh each time.

Oh and i'd change thegameplay as well so it doesnt get boring. lastly i'd getrid of the silly random encounters they've had even in 12 and make itso you could see the enemies. i'd also introduce a revolutionary camera system andpack tons moreaction in the battles for the XIII and XIII versus.

my 2 cents.

i hope my post makes as much sense as your's TC :)

I think this is what we all want, all I need to play from square-enix FF series ( on consoles I mean cuz it's better), I think their Mascot is FF and DQ, if they don't make it, the image of Square-Enix will fade,I think every company is focusing on their best games right now for the nex-gen consoles ( Konami with MGS and PES, Capcom with RE5 and DMC4..etc).On the other hand I think after they finish with their most wanted games they will announce other games so all you have to do is waiting.

you know they canmake more of the ps2 right?Tnasty11

For some reason no-one is making games for the GBA or Ps2 any more even though they pwn in sales and market share. It's a shame but if the're going to make games for one system i'd prefer the DS. Best system out imho

Square is a good developer, but I haven't really enjoyed any of their games since FFX.

I think SE has done a great job of making each new FF different and unique from past FF's.

just look at FFX AND FF12 and compare those two.

I haven't played any of the PS2 FF titles(or the PS1 ones, for that matter), but it sounds as if they can't even compare to the SNES ones. As for Square Enix in general...they've lost their touch. I'm especially steamed about how they've managed to botch the Seiken Densetsu/Mana franchise by deviating way too much from the formula(Children of Mana has you by your lonesome with a crippled magic and weapon system, Heroes of Mana is a RTS, and I don't even want to start on Dawn of Mana)...hell, all they really need to do is port or remake Seiken Densetsu 3 for all I care, I just want the series like it was in the SNES days!
