eb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Square Enix Co., Japan's second- largest game software publisher, plans to acquire companies domestically or in countries including India and China to accelerate profit growth.

``Acquisitions and alliances will be the cornerstone of our growth strategy this year and the next,'' President Yoichi Wada said in an interview today, without being more specific. ``We are an entertainment content provider, so you won't see us buying business software or food and beverage companies.''

The company last made an acquisition in 2005, when it bought Taito Corp., a Japanese arcade game maker that created the ``Space Invaders'' title. Tokyo-based Square Enix, formed in 2003 when Square Co. merged with Enix Corp., has closed unprofitable stores to help meet a goal of turning the arcade business to profit this fiscal year.

LInk

So who do you think Square will buy out? Sega maybe?

They should buy out SEGA. Maybe then they will make a good Sonic game.

Considering Square's quality has gone sharply downhill since the last major "acquisition", I'm not sure this is good news.

They make a lot more games that is for sure but the last FF still got a AAA by almost every website. I also like the fact they are doing so many more FF games.

They still make good games but if you compare SE today and in the PS1 gen you get the point.

A lot of the good games they make today is remakes from that gen.

Hopefully FFXIII and VS is superb.

Most of the remakes are from the Nintendo and SNES time. DQ 1-4 and FF 1-6 are what they have planed or already come out with in remakes. I would love to see some of the other games. And you are right they don't put has much into the games has they use to but then again there is not as long of a wait between Square games now not counting FF core games. The games are still amazing and I rather have more great games then 1 super great game every other year.

I can see it now.

First they buy the Marvel Fighting Game License and do crossover haven.

I can see it now:

Xmen vs. Final Fantasy

Super Marvel Brawl

Marvel vs. Square-Enix

After that they start buying some smaller known companies.

They'll buy out NiS so they can stop making Disgaea making Final Fantasy Tactics pretty much the only consistent SRPG series.

Since they said they wanted China they'd probably try and buy out SNK to get the King of Fighter's franchise so they can turn it into "The King of Square" as all characters from previous Squaresoft games battle it out.

They'll also buy out many small developers from those countries so that they can make games like:

Final Fantasy XII MMO for the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360

Dragon Quest VIII Wii Remake

Kingdom Hearts Special Edition for the PSP

Kingdom Hearts II Special Edition for the PSP

Final Fantasy III DS Remake for the Wii

Oh good joy!

As long as they keep providing the main FF games and the KH franchise, I could care less about their remakes and ports.

"Slaps forhead hard" The SNES era! how could I not think straight.

My point was not that they don't make good games but far less of them.

Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9

Chrono Cross

Front mission 1,2

Vagrant story

Legend of mana

Thread of fate

Parasite Eve 1,2

Yeah you have a point, Square seems to milk their remakes to much (Especially FF1 and 2) The only quality games you get are DQ,FF and KH the main franchises, spin offs are some quick cash-ins and are rarerly compared to a top quality main franchise game.

Your right but I don't mind remakes. Some of the remakes like FF3 I have never played and other ones like DQ4 my fav of the DQ games I am glad to be able to replay on a handheld. Plus it a way to get new players who would never go back and play these great games a chance to play them.

Plus yes some of the spin offs have been bad X-2 and I forget the FF7 one on the PS2. But I am still looking forward to the FF7 spin off for the PSP. I am glad to see the spin off which have charters that I have enjoyed and want to play games with them again. Heck I would buy the party game for the DS if it comes state side.

Ouch, I only hope they take a good team that is good at something other than rpg, cause Square making non rpg games is auto-destruction, Dirge of Cerberus is sort of a proof.

Why not, they could let Atlus make their games, and Square to publish them, that way it won't be a pain in the *** finidng an atlus game.

They could publish their games for them in the West without owning Atlus.

I don't want Square Enix to expand on their monopoly...I liked it better when they were competing against each other. Now it's just bleh.

That's why competition is needed. It's one of the reasons why I hate when companies absorb one another.

Level-5 is indie now.

As for the chances of them being brought out, they develop/publish the Professor Layton games....you know those Japanese Adventure/Puzzlers that sell near a million copies in Japan alone?

FF12 got good scores, because it was calld FF, if not the game would be in 6/10 area, yes, it was THAT bad and mediocre generic stuff to me, the fact that this game is called FF, is a humiliation to the series IMO

That's why I don't see it happening, Level-5 is moving up and trying to become more self reliant.

I think it would be better for Nintendo to eat SEGA. Put the same team as SMG on a new Sonic project.
