Voodoo Extreme reports:

From Ukraine to the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. forums, to Google Translate to Dozerking, to me:

The poster translated the article, saying the CEO of GSC, Sergei Grigorovich, reported sales of 950,000 units in CIS, while selling 700,000 units in the rest of the world, almost all at full price. That would total about 1.65 Million copies plus, since the interview.

GSC proves, once again, that PC gaming isn't dead.

It may not be a SUPERSTELLAR success, but it proves that PC is definitely stickin' around.

PC gaming in the US wasn't as big as it was 5 or 6 years ago..and I'm not sure if other PC gaming markets have grown enough to make up the difference.

Edit: Well It can be bigger but the forces acting againts it is taking more of a toll then it once did.

I need to rebuy this, seeing as I have an extra gig of RAM this time around. Maybe my rig won't bottleneck it as it had previously.

yeah, that's most likely true, but still seeing it doing well is more important. also, i really don't think much can be done about these factors

Also, that was in Q3 of last year, so it could be nearing 2 by now. Good to see it do well, it was the best FPS I had played since HL2.

Copy protection will have to get more intense! Unalterable or unaccessible program files is all I can think off. I can see the modding community taking a hit from this though.

It's no wonder GSC was all about a sequel, good for them. Even despite how buggy STALKER was upon release, it still did rather well. I would bet their STEAM numbers really helped them.

Not at all, copy protection tends to hurt sales more than it helps. It pisses of consumers liky myself that legally purchase content, and those that want to pirate it will find a work-around. What publishers need to do is take a look at what Stardock is doing, and rather than trying to punish those who pirate their games they should reward those who legally purchase their products.

or they need to look at other ways of profiting from games like what DICE and ID are doing with BF heroes, and Quake Live.

i really don't any copy protection is immune to being cracked and it in the end hurts people who legally bought the game.

also anything meddling with modding capablities should be a serious no no :P

The only copyright protection that is immune to tampering with is the CPS2 and CPS3 Cacpom Play Systems as they essentially self deactivate if tampered with.

It was only a couple years back that they reverse engineered the software for other such bad pirating purposes. But actually physcially bootlegging it is near impossible.

There needs to be less copy protection. In the end, it only hurts those who legally purchased the game as well as the company who developed the game. For example, even though I thought Trackmania was a really fun game, I refused to buy it because it used Starforce.

yeah, Steam and Direct2Drive are my two main sources for buying PC games now. The others are when games like SOASE require their own downloader. Same goes for EA-Store, ugh.

But anyway, I never buy at local stores anymore.

I'm pretty sure the STEAM version doesn't have any nasty DRM in it, I've been wanting to pick that up for some time.

PC gaming isn't dead, sales are just slow. A lot of console games sell millions in days/weeks.
