I really hope Bioware gives The Old Republic a chance on PS3 and Xbox 360. Something truly unique and special about Final Fantasy XI was that it was one of the rare instances where PC, PS2/PS3 (if you had a compatible one) and Xbox 360 players could all come together and play the same game with each other and be part of a comunity that didn't revolve around being at each others' throats. It totally bypasses the console war concept and just lets everyone come together and have fun and be part of a community with no console-specific borders or divisions, and I think TOR could take it even further since it also taps into the Star Wars fan community.

The biggest potential issue in porting will probably be coming up with an adequate control scheme for console play without altering the gameplay, but I think that's perfectly doable. There have been a lot of innovations in recent years in regards to onscreen menu systems with console games. Also, the Xbox 360 and PS3 both have keyboard peripherals that snap directly onto the controllers, which could open up new options for not just communication but also controls by way of shortcuts, which PC MMO players have been accustomed to for years. I smell bundle opportunities if TOR gets released on consoles.

I think it's not only ood business sense to release TOR on consoles, and it would also be a great opportunity to make TOR community open to the largest amount of Star Wars fans possible. Do it, Bioware.

quite honestly, by making it multiplat, its only going to hurt the PC version. A lot of developers have discussed this, there are issues with console MMO's that go way beyond just the control scheme, which already is a huge barrier.

huh? FFXI had shared servers between PS2/PC/360? i always thought each system had its own specific.

I would probably get it if it came to consoles.

No. MMO's can stay on the platform they're on.

It certainly be less pain-staking then convincing my friends to try out some PC gaming but I'm more than contempt to play it on PC. Until I'm convinced otherwise, I don't truly see many MMO's meant for consoles. I'm liking The Agency for PS3 but certain ones like TOR are more fitting for PC.

Yup. I had FFXI on PC back before I got a PS2, and I used to play it with my brother who had the PS2 version. The Xbox 360 version came out later but it was one of the rare games that Microsoft permitted the publisher to use their own servers, because they wanted cross-platform compatibility. There have been cross platform games between just the PS3 and PC or just Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live, but it's pretty rare that there's a game that lets Playstation and Xbox players play with each other. MMO's seem to be one of the exceptions.

I don't really like playing on my PC, though. I've got Orange Box and I've hardly even touched it because I just plain don't care for PC gaming that much. If it all boils down to it I'd consider picking up TOR on PC, but only if there were no other versions available. And even then, if they were to come out with a PS3 port later I'd be pretty likely to pick it up just so I'd have the option of playing on my console instead.

Dude it won't happen. Since you are posting on this forum, you must have some sort of PC, so why not get the PC version of the game. It will prolly run on low settings, even on the crummiest rig.

Hero engine (the platform for TOR) was written for PC, it would take *years* to re-write Hero, and then years to port over the stuff. Also any new MMO tend to need at least 1GB RAM, which is more than twice what either console has. As is Dragon Age (for the same dev) sucked big time due to tiny levels and loading screens, due to the need to accommodate consoles. All attempts at console MMO have failed, since not only are they technically bad for it, but you also get arguments about LIve, PSN, subscription v MMO subs models....the suits just can't seem to agree.

This pretty much sums up why MMOs tend to stay away from consoles. You cannot design an MMO for consoles without consoles own limitations hurting the PC version.

It looks like EA is considering console ports of TOR, so it's clearly not outside the realm of technical possibility.

...Electronic Arts exec Frank Gibeau said, "We're definitely looking at the opportunity to bring the MMO experience to console, without question." So, we hope that answers your question: EA definitely, maybe, kind of could bring The Old Republic to consoles. Maybe.

If it's possible to make it work, then I say go for it. Console ports = more players = bigger community = more support = WoW challenger confirmed.

You just said that even a crappy PC can run TOR on minimal settings, but then go on to say that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are too limited to handle it? That doesn't seem to add up to me. At any rate, EA seems to think otherwise, because as I said early EA representatives have stated their interest in putting the game on consoles. If the ports are good enough to handle cross-platform play with the PC version, then they will have succeeded.

They say this stuff every time a high profile MMO comes along I remember when Star Wars Galaxies was listed for the original Xbox but that got canned as well. The MMO infrastructure is just hard to do on consoles when you have to play by their rules on making it work.

These devs are insane. Here you have a complete blue ocean with the lack of any real MMO on consoles. They could easily have WoW like success were they to actually make it well and offer it to the console player base. Instead they would all rather go up against the monster that is Blizzard. It's the equivelant of all of the major third party developers falling over each other to develop on the Wii thus going up against the monster that is Nintendo. Notice that didn't happen with the Wii but for some insane reason they all go PC only and end up biting the dust shortly after launch or before even in alot of casses. Makes no sense to me whatsoever but hey if they want to go broke trying to beat WoW have fun with that lol. To be fair out of all the MMO ideas and finished products I have seen try to take on WoW this one does have the best chance but they are still crazy not to at least try on consoles.

That's because WAR failed. :? Think, man. It's the same reason Age of Conan wasn't ported to consoles. It just didn't get huge enough due to issues. SWTOR is going to be big. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to consoles depending on how much the game succeeds.

Any one who thinks TOR will come out on the PS3 or the XBOX 360 is either tripping on acid or not realizing the interface, gameplay, and technical hurdles that Bioware would have to overcome.

Wow people dont know tech.

HERE IT IS

CONSOLES ONLY HAVE 512 mb's of ram. So a multiplat would have to be butchered. Theres control scheme issues, payment plan issues, and that game would die on the PC as it could not compete with a PC execlusive title DESIGNED around PC's.

It will be a huge coup for Sony or Microsoft if either get TOR as an exclusive for their system. I have to believe that both are working toward this, but obviously there are obstacles (control scheme, monthly fees vs. flat fees, etc.).

Final Fantasy XI actually was more successful that Square anticipated. They only intended to support it for 5 years since it started, and they ended up supporting it for EIGHT. The game was slow to pick up on PS2 in the US due to the high initial investment cost (it was $100 due to the pack-in HDD unit), but it managed to be quite successful and ended up being available on all major platforms. It was hardly a WoW killer, but in a day and age when almost all new MMO's seem to fall to the WoW brute it's still very impressive what FFXI managed to accomplish. I think Square's willingness to branch out across all platforms was part of why FFXI managed to build a sizeable and loyal fanbase. Blizzard wasn't going to throw console fans a bone any time soon, and Square had good support for the game across all consoles. I think that if TOR was to be ported to consoles, it could give them a real edge in catching up with WoW. Warcraft is very much a PC-based franchise and has never really had a presence on consoles. Warcraft is unfamiliar to console gamers for the most part, so Blizzard probably feels that the appeal of having WoW on a console is probably too limited to be worth bothering with. Star Wars however is a cultural phenomenon. Not every Star Wars fan has a gaming-capable PC, but a great many of them do have a modern game console and are itching for more Star Wars to play. Putting TOR on a console would mean it's going to reach out to the entirety of the Star Wars fanbase, which means the biggest potential user-base possible. Right now, that potential userbase is limited to Star Wars fans who own a PC, and I think Bioware and EA need to do a lot better than that if they want to go toe-to-toe with WoW. Also take into consideration that almost all multiplatform Star Wars games have sold much better on consoles than PC (including the Knights of the Old Republic series), and the case for porting TOR to consoles is rather compelling.

It would have to be completely redesigned for consolles, so... nah. They already looked into it way back when they first announced it. I think there's an article posted on that inthis thread even. That was two years ago. Obviously the scope of the game meant they focused on the one platform that would work for it. And now its one of the few games I believe I'll be willing to pay a subscription for, so keep it that way.

I can't think of a good reason why not. I'd get it on PC anyway, but I'm all for them finding ways to challenge WoW.

Let alone the fact that the original Knights of the Old Republic that this game builds upon launched first on the Xbox.

This too.

I would love that to happen. The only thing it could do i make them money, hopefully they understand how great they are at making these games and how much EVERYONE who even remotely enjoys star wars love their games. This game will slaughter WOW...... If brought to consoles.

Meh, I kinda knew you would cherry pick something and mis-represent it. Look Hero is not written for the consoles, it's still gonna take *years*....I hope you enjoy the wait.

Also this notion of "Power" of a console or PC is so simplistic it's ridiculous. There is no linear "continuum" of power. Sure, 360 may have better graphics than an old PC; the fact still remains it has a paltry 512MB RAM; most PC have a lot more. It's "horses for courses".

Fore example, here's ONE reason to have tons of RAM on an MMO.....all the gear people like to have. In a game like WOW or AOC, when a char moves into your range, your PC has to load up say 8 out of a possible 40,000 different pieces of gear for EACH character you see. If you don't want the armors to look sucky, you also need BIG textures. If you have a slow hard disk, or low RAM...good luck on a lag free performance. This was the REAL reason for "Lagforge" in WoW....all the different chars with diff gear that you would come across in a town hub, and people with sucky PC, Slow Discs, Low RAM. Compared even to a low end PC, consoles have tiny RAM, and 360 does not even have a decent hard disc across the board. You could possibly get something running as long as you *instance the hell out of it*....and have tiny levels with loading screens. Gee can't wait to get a game like that /sarcasm.

Check out the reviews for cross platform PC/Console games, they nearly always say how sucky the textures are on the consoles, or there's compression artifacts. I've even seen games on consoles, where the chars on the console version have limited options and armors....memory issues again. I run games now with *6GB of RAM*, on 64 bit OS, it makes lot of difference, since textures spool of the disc fast, and can even be pre-loaded into memory.

Actually I *really WISH*, there would be a decent MMO for consoles, I just honestly cant see it happening with the current gen of consoles. If they do, it would likely to be half baked-garbage.

I disagree, it'd compromise quality.

If you want to play it, do so on PC. Otherwise, tough.

No, it shouldn't. Console mmorpg's have never been up to par quality wise to pc mmorpg's. I want a high quality Star Wars mmorpg. Thanks.

It has a better chance of being a success if it is designed from the ground up to be played on a PC. Attempting to design an MMO for consoles and PC will only hold back the PC version of the game.

Why do people keep saying it would limit the potential of the game. I know what you are saying but what about a port ffs? After the pc version is done lower the assests and port it not unheard of guys. It's also kind of funny you all totally ignore the fact that Blizzard is the 300lbs gorrila here and there is no guarantee they will make any profits on a pc version, in fact given the focus on voice acting no doubt severly limiting content they could easily lose lots of money on this, wheras had they developed it lets say exclusively for consoles there would be basically automatic profits since there is no competition on the consoles at all. Can you imagine the amount of content even in vanilla WoW all voice acted? How much would that cost? I don't see it happening and that alone could limit this games potential more than any other factor.
