11,225 in Fire Strike. Allegedly 15% faster than an RX 480. The price is a bit of a bummer as the AIB versions are 49$ more expensive than the 4GB 480 and 20$ more expensive than the 8GB model. They will sell for 249$. The Founder's Edition will retail at 299$ a full 100$ above the 4GB 480 and 70$ above the 8GB version.

Yeah 15% faster, 2GB of extra VRAM, won't fry your motherboard and consumes less power. All of that for 49$. What were you expecting exactly?

I'm still more interested in the RX480. I'm looking forward to the 3rd party versions with better cooling options.

Still waiting on that 1080 Ti. Hell will probably wait till 1180 Ti. I want that single GPU that can max out all modern games at 4K and 60fps without breaking a sweat.

The GTX 1060 is a nice card for those with a budget of 250$. Delivers solid performance even at 4K(if you don't mind 30fps) and is very good at 1440p. I would have liked to see it price at around 229$ though.

It's good to see some competition in this mid-end market. Prices could be better yeah, but GTX1070 and GTX1080 are ludicrously priced over here.

Also it seems like Nvidia sees itself as its competitior with the founders edition (I don't get why we need a founders edition)

Anyways, I'm still content to game at 1080p (2560x1080 monitor and 1080p TV). But of course down the line we will all move to 4K. Or some equivalent 21:9 monitor for me :)

I'm still waiting for the 1070 price drop when the stocks replenish. But I'm keeping the 1060 in my radar, especially if it's priced reasonably.

@Juub1990:

$200 compared to $300. This is if Nvidia is being nice. GTX 1070 MSRP is $379, while avg price of non-founder editions on Newegg is $449.

Note: I am just going by Nvidia's established M.O. Figure we should compare the 4GB to the 6GB, as opposed to the 6GB to the 8GB like you're doing.

@GoldenElementXL:

Why are you so hung up on AMD offering a bonus on account of needing more 4GB stock? This isn't unheard of they did it with the Phenom X3.

P.S.- 8GB versions were available for days at $210. There was a thread on Reddit's AMD sub-thread. Also, the 4GB unlock to 8GB was known DAY 1. People had a choice. Let it go.

Offering a bonus? GTFO! People paid more money for more VRAM for a reason. People had a choice? Come on, really? AMD did it 8 years ago so it's OK? You can't be this dismissive and yet so anti Nvidia.

Well this is System Wars I guess...

I cancelled my $210 8GB RX 480 order because nobody was getting it past 1.4GHz. I'm going to buy a GTX 1070 instead, so how am I anti-Nvidia?

P.S.- The 4GB to 8GB unlock was revealed on the morning of the release of the RX 480. Not only that, there was a front-page thread on Reddit on how to get a $210 8GB edition. I did it myself a day after the thread dropped.

I hope he doesn't think anyone willingly bought the 8GB version knowing they could just unlock the 4GB. That's not a choice. That is misleading consumers. They made freakin stickers to cover up the box for crying out loud.

So everyone who bought a RX 480 also visits Reddit? And the $210 8GB is still more expensive than the 4 GB version. That's still not good.

And I've seen plenty of folks getting the RX 480 over 1.5. I'm not sure what you're seeing.

As for the gtx 1060. I may have to swallow the poison pill for that one. It may just be enough of an upgrade for me to ditch my 290.

We're back to square one boys. 200$ cards will outclass the Neo when it comes out. By the time the Scorpio comes out with its fabled 6TFLOP's of performance(lol) we'll have 200$ cards that will completely murk it.

@GoldenElementXL:

So we've established a few different things:

1. I am not a Nvidia-hater

2. It's unlikely that the GTX 1060 will offer superior bang-for-buck compared to RX 480

3. The 4GB to 8GB unlock was known DAY 1.

4. It's not unprecedented for companies to downgrade functional versions to fill gaps in supply(i.e.-6950, Phenom X3)

5. Reddit was a major epicenter for Power-gate.

6. Nvidia said it was 4GB, but gave 3.5GB. AMD said it was 4GB, but gave 8GB

Do you know how bitter and domineering you guys sound? We should hope that AMD can offer some competition to keep Nvidia honest, right?

2. It's unlikely that the GTX 1060 will offer superior bang-for-buck compared to RX 480

For 50$ you get a 15% performance increase and 50% more VRAM along with much better power consumption. I say it already does.

3. The 4GB to 8GB unlock was known DAY 1.

And how does that matter? They still sell them at a 199$ vs 229$ MSRP.

4. It's not unprecedented for companies to downgrade functional versions to fill gaps in supply(i.e.-6950, Phenom X3)

It's still slimy.

5. Reddit was a major epicenter for Power-gate.

Doesn't matter.

6. Nvidia said it was 4GB, but gave 3.5GB. AMD said it was 4GB, but gave 8GB

Both gave false advertising. NVIDIA got rightfully slammed for their 3.5GB cards trying to pass off as legit 4GB and AMD got caught for asking a 30$ premium for 8GB when they damn well knew their 4GB model was effectively an 8GB one.

I got the 1070 to kill 1080p @60 fps. Looking at benchmarks it gets great results, right behind the 1080. I dont have a 4k monitor, so its perfect for me.

Have you tried downsampling? I recently downsample Arkham Knight on 4K on a 1080p TV and the difference is pretty significant.

1070 is way overkill for 1080p but might fall a bit short for 1440p in some games.

Well I'm not ready to drop 500+ on a 4k monitor, my friend just spent close to a grand an a 4k ultra wide:

And the 1080 cant do 60fps on the latest games.

I may get a 144mhz Monitor though, but It will be awesome playing everything on ultra @60fps.

@Heil68: You down need a 4K monitor. Use DSR it's in the NVIDIA control panel. You can downsample all the way to 5K. 4K downsampled on a 1080p monitor looks a lot nicer than native 1080p.

Someone skipped math clases at school lol

It's a 25% increase. But it actually should be compared with the 8GB version of RX400, which is 240USD. So you actually pay 10 extra bucks for a 15% performance increase.

Nah. 1070 is actually aimed at 1440p, maybe not all settings at ultra, but it's there. In my experience, 1440p looks way better than down sampling at 1080p.

Besides he owns an MSI so it already comes overclocked, which makes it a bit closer to the stock GTX1080. He should be able to max most games at 2k without any problem.

According to benchmarks, Metro LL is the onlu game than can not be totally maxed at 1440p right now by a gtx 1070.

He can even max out Witcher 3 (65 fps)

The gtx 960 was a complete disappointment. AMD forced their hand to put upgrade the 60s series. Problem is they also jacked the price by 100 dollars. At least the midrange GPU have been given a worthy performance increase.

Yeah but his monitor is only 1080p so he best use DSR to get a better image quality.

Yeah but he needs to disable Hairworks to get 65fps. Otherwise it will dips to the low 50's or even high 40's.

He should get himself a 1440p display for 350USD, preferably 32 inches, ultra wide or normal. That would greatly improve his gaming experience.

And no, according to benchmarks, gtx 1070 does 65fps at Witcher 3 with pure hair on.

And this is DirectX11. At DirectX12 he should get an additional 15-20% performance boost, which makes gtx1070 a perfect match for 1440p gaming.

You're confusing TW3 with Tomb Taider. PureHair is in ROTTR. I also don't think TW3 gets any benefits from DX12. It's entirely built on DX11. ROTTR was ported to DX12.

Hairworks is DISABLED to objectively compare inbetween AMD and Nvidia cards.

Where can you find a 32"/1440p display for 350USD? Are you talking about those Korean monitors? I got one myself. Had it since 2013 and bought it for 279$ USD. 27''/1440p. Great purchase!

He should get himself a 1440p display for 350USD, preferably 32 inches, ultra wide or normal. That would greatly improve his gaming experience.

Oh you are right. I apologize. I was looking at ROTR benchmark lol. I believe I saw a 350USD 32 inches display on Newegg a few months ago. Discounted though. I have bought mine 2 ago for 500CAD. A BenQ.

Yeah I just looked up and 4K displays have really gone down in price. Still not gonna get one. I don't have the hardware to max games in 4K yet. Will probably need 1080 Ti in SLI or 1180 Ti to do that. How is the GTX 1080 by the way?

Amazing. It can do Witcher 3 at 1440p, 60fps, with hairworks on to the max (up to 4 npcs I believe). But it has its downsides lol, with graphics so crisp and smooth, Witcher 3 at max settings looks like a cgi cartoon now. The same problem with Assassin Creed Syndycate, it also looks too cartoony now lol

Fire Strike doesn't stress video memory, using aging DX11 and it's only useful to compare within the same GPU family.

This has been around for the past 12 years at least. I did it on my ATi 9800 SE, to mod it to a 9800 Pro. Nvidia still do it, AMD still do it, it's going to stick around for a while yet.
