I didn't like Crysis that much, but honestly, i don't see any game in the near future beating it in graphics.
Here's the thing. A person can take the Cry Engine and spend hundereds of hours on new art and textures for a single map that looks better than anything in the original Crysis. Cryteck doesn't have this luxary. They have to produce a full, fun game. If they wanted, they could have taken the original Cryengine and made every level like that. To get it out in 2007 the maps would have been half the size if not less and there would be very little gameplay to be had. Not to mention in 2007 no PC could run maps like that on very high.
It's all budgeting their resources and focusing on what they have to work with.
The CryEngine is probably the most powerful game engine ever created and the CryEngine 2 is even more capable. It is only up to the developers on how to use that engine.
Overall, it looks fantastic, especially the foliage which has high res. textures. Though there are some weak spots such as the lower res rock textures.
The creator, as i have read from the info. is trying to achive the max. of that engine, if he manages to tweak those weak spots (since he is trying to achieve perfection), then God damn.
"I'd just like to acknowledge, this is all in real-time. The scene and forest is very playable and in good frame rate. I'm running a gtx295 and i7 975, in the most intensive scenes the frame rate is between 40-60fps. Less intensive area's have a +10fps increase.
There isn't any download yet, or specified release date. I plan to release this sometime next year."
I don't think Crisys 2 will even gen close to topping this map mod once its finnished.

Wasdie
Ever wonder if it will take over the same way the Unreal engine is all over the place now? Maybe even looking into next generation where the consoles will have more capable hardware?
And I really need to upgrade my rig. :P
