Poll Story Driven VS Gameplay Focused games (33 votes)

Story 15%
Gameplay 85%

I used to spend lots of cents at the Arcade back in the 80/90's as well as playing games like Super Mario and Metroid on my NES. I played lots of NEO-GEO games, Street Fighter II, Puzzle Bobble and so many others just for the sheer fun of it.

Storytelling in games has therefore never interested me that much, maybe because I've always seen video games as a mindless entertainment, a way to kill time and have fun, seek for high scores, being competitive with other guys and get mad at losing.

What says you? What types of games are you most interested in?

It's about the experience the game provides. Super Mario Galaxy doesn't have much of a story to tell, that doesn't stop it from being one of the most emotionally enthralling games of the past decade.

Gameplay first, but as I've aged meaning has become more important. I look more for reason as to what I'm doing, and if a game can provide that past the incentive of just doing it "for fun", all the better.

Depends on my mood. Both have quality reasons to play when done correctly.

Gameplay but graphics, artstyle, story, characters, music and so on are just as important to me.

I tend to skip/fast forward the storytelling more often than not (very rarely does the story interest me in a game), so my vote goes to gameplay.

I always a enjoy a good story but gameplay is much more important as it is what defines videogames as a form of entertainment.

If I were a story oriented gamer, it would make no sense to me to like The Order more than A Link Between Worlds just because The Order is heavier on story content.

Story-driven or gameplay-driven is never a factor for me. What's a factor is if the game executes its vision properly.

You can have a great game with a bad story, but you won't have one with bad gameplay.

A video game needs to do the interactive part right. Otherwise it completely fails as a video game. Besides, a lot of the "great stories" that you find in video games would be butchered and laughed at if they transferred to another medium.

Who wouldn't vote for gameplay is the bigger question. Videogames as a means of relaying a story is literally one of the worst ways to do it because of the interactivity necessary to tell that story. By their very nature their worse than movies and books.

Gameplay, always. Even in stuff like Shenmue, I wouldn't play it if I didn't like the combat.

I'll enjoy a game with little story if it has good gameplay, but if the gameplay is crap and the story great I'll have a more difficult time getting through it.

But in a lot of cases, the story can elevate the game further making it much more memorable than a game with superior gameplay in my opinion. It really comes down to execution and the sum of its parts. Some of my favorite games are those that have serviceable and decent gameplay tied with a good story.

Story is important for a great game, but a game can still be good without story. Gameplay is necessary for a game to be decent.

Bingo. Not that there aren't some exceptions for stories, but I like my games to be actual fucking games, not a bunch of half baked ideas so the dev can try out their fan fiction tier story telling chops. That said if the game executes on all fronts, more power to it. That is a legit special experience. Those also happen to be very rare.

I'm far more on the side of gameplay. I like to be in control when a controller's in my hands. Fighters, platformers, hack N slash, and action adventures with a focus on exploration and player interaction are at the top of my play list.

You can still have a superb game even if it has a bad story.

You can't even have a decent game if it has bad gameplay no matter how good the story is.

All of my favourite games have a great story, so it's a very important part of a game for me. But it's hard to say that story is more important than gameplay... if it was, might as well just watch a movie.

Ideally both, but my preference is gameplay of course. I'm a very athletic person, and this translates into the types of games I love to play....I enjoy games where to excel, you need great hand-to-eye coordination, reflexes, instincts, etc.

So games like fighters, shooters, etc I have a preference for.....and I enjoy playing competitively a lot because of this.

Remove the story from the game -> end product is a game.

Remove the game from a story -> end product is a story.

Story is always optional, never necessary.
