Goichi Suda, otherwise known as Killer 7 and No More Heroes director Suda 51, claims that third-party titles for the Wii aren't selling in his home land and that only Nintendo is really profiting from its success.

Speaking about the sales of No More Heroes in Japan, he told us, "Whilst the sales weren't as high as I hoped, other titles for Wii aren't selling so well either. Only Nintendo titles are doing well. This isn't just because of the current situation in Japan, as this is happening outside Japan."

He also expressed surprise over the casual audience that has been the primary adopters of the Wii. "Actually I was very surprised about the reality about Wii, because before I was making this game, I wasn't expecting that Wii would be a console targeted only for non-gamers. I expected more games for hardcore gamers. The reality is different to what I expected".Suda51

a lot of hardcores have a Wii. A game wont sell itself unless its a known franchise, also most of the third party 'hardcore' games are crap if ubisoft markets NMH well it Will sell to Suda's expectations

Who cares, the PS3 is even more uninteresting than the Wii.

Me too, but the article doesn't say that no hardcore gamers have the system; it says that the system is targeted towards casual gamers, which is pretty much true. Look at the way it's been marketed: Commercials focus on the casual and party-oriented aspect of the Wii. Hell, Nintendo themselves admitted that they're trying to appeal to a new customer who traditionally isn't interested in games. One look at the Wii's library and you can see evidence of this strategy, as there are probably 3 casual games for every 1 "hardcore" one.

The whole console is targeted at non-gamers or first time gamers. No surprise here. Most people already knew this. Some in denial though.

Of course the Wii ismarketed toward non-traditional gamers, but don't make the mistake of thinking that it's only geared toward them.

I have a lot of respect for Goichi Suda but he can't honestly blame Nintendo entirely for this. Plenty of real gamers own a Wii. Ican guarentee it would have sold even worse on the 360.

Here's hoping the game sells much better in America, Europe and Australia. Hopefully it's just an indication of the vast differences between ours and their gaming markets. You have to admit, they're strikingly different. No More Heroes doesn't look like the kind of thing Japanese gamers love.

At least, that's what I hope is the explanation. If I'm wrong, I'll be worried for the wii, as the critical reception for this game is so far quite positive.

Game was marketed poorly. Would you buy a game you never heard of when you've just stocked up on games from the holiday season? Probably not.

mario(kart, tennis, baseball, golf, strikers), zelda, metroid, pikmin, animal crossing, smash bros, yoshi, advance wars, and pokemon are all laughing back at you.

any developer that can make so many amazing games, and keep them coming with top notch quality for 20 years is the best.(and thats nintendo)

How do people know how well the game was marketed in Japan? Or how well anything is marketed in Japan. All we get are occasional ad snippets on youtube or other sites, but we don't know how much they appear and on what media channels they appear most. Unless you live there.

How much did Killer 7 sell, in Japan or otherwise? vgchartz says 0.00mill. That's tiny, but it probably just means they failed to track it. Either way, it's not likely to be much. That said, I think Killer7 is more niche than No More Heroes. NMH gameplay is more traditional, and while the graphics are stylized, they're still closer to traditional graphics than Killer7.

Here's hoping it's an example of too niche for commercial success, or sells better in US, and is not a true indicator of how well great but mainstream 3rd party games will sell on Wii.

Even if you don't think there the best, you can't deny their really high up their. Anyone who doesn't recgonize that is nothing more than an ignorant fanboy and a disgrace to gamers everywheres, hell, there not even a gamer.

judging by the 10 best games ever by gamerankings, nintendo has 4 games in there, and valve has 3 (all of which are the same game)

it is a true testament to their skill that nintendo can create 3 franchises, and have them all in the top 10, and mario is in there twice

I like how developers think their no-name games will sell with little/no advertising. All the big sellers last year, excepting one, had pretty massive advertising campaigns (Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock). Nobody has heard of No More Heroes before, and nobody will. I'm going to guess that about 5% of gamers actually follow gamer news.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Killer 7 pretty much tank in Japan as well? Perhaps Suda's games arejust too weird even for Japan. Scarey thought.

Is it targeted to non gamers primarily? : Yes

Isit only targeted to non-gamers?: No There are a couple of hardcore games on the system.

The guy is just sour that the game flopped in sales (mostly due to the nearly non-existent advertising)

The impression he is getting is given mainly by third party cash-ins, that a) don't sell well, and b) target non-gamers.

Seriously why do people knock this game. I played it at my arcade and though it wasn't great it was definately better then Time Crisis 4 (a game other people hyped).
