There is going to be a fan remake of the game that will come out for the PC for free. Plus there will be a multiplayer mode as well. If it's true then this might be the best remake of a game for me. I see SM64 as my favorite 3D Mario game and seeing it being remade is awesome. I hope Nintendo is ok with this fan work

Hate to be a buzzkill, but watch Nintendo shoot this down.

Seems like he's not going to finish this anytime soon. But would be nice to see the legal matters raised from fan made stuff like this game and the fan made Halo game for PC.

Nice to see how a Super Mario 64 remake would be like, but it will not last long.

I know they worked hard on this and it does look good, but they really need an art director, or at least to pay more attention to modern Mario games for some visual direction.

Their current shaders simply don't work. Too high on the specular, too low on the diffuse output. They need to tackle some look-dev before pushing too far in the wrong direction.

And while the textures are more detailed than a typical Mario title in terms of pixel density, the actual texture work is lacking in artistic direction. Mainly the environmental textures. In some instances they're using tiled photo based textures which is completely out of place for a Mario title. They need to be digitally painted from scratch with simple yet bold shape language and vibrant contrasting colors.

I understand it's a work in progress and that those textures may be place holders, but those shader issues should have been addressed by this stage of development. I'm not expecting their texture work to reach Nintendo artist quality, but there is still much room for improvement.

Skybox outside the castle looks great and I dig the colors. Needs more contrast between the sky and clouds though and the clouds could use bolder shapes.

I'm not trying to be negative, but if they're going to do this thing I'd like to see visual improvements that go beyond brute force high res assets, I want them to nail the style as well.

On the positive side, the models look great! Not sure if some are ripped from modern Mario titles, but that Lakitu model in particular has some very well organized and efficient topology. It's a professionally built game res model. Well done!

Nintendo won't allow this; it will be cancelled.

They could just release the first world only and leave it at that, change the name, it would have a far greater chance of being released then, and people would still love it.

Why the hell would you put this much effort into something that is clearly a violation of copyrights?

Or a better question, why would you make it known long before it has any chance of being completed?

Seems like fan project designers have no concept of reality and that's why we never get any good fan made content for classic console games.

I am unsure whether or not I agree. I assume the opening is the general look that is trying to be reached, and imo it is one of the best fan efforts I've seen. It resembles 64, Galaxy, Windwaker, and MK8 all at the same time a bit. The Model looks like it was ripped from Smash Bros--that is the part that doesn't fit much, imo.

Looks like great attention was paid to the original Mario 64 as far as attempting to capture the feel without altering it too much. You say photographic textures are out of place, yet there are areas in Mario 64 which hold a resemblance to a photographic image--particularly in some brick/roof areas.

Nintendo already have us a great remake. I won't shit on effort and passion though. I just see less value in this game in 2015 more than other people.

The ds version stunk, imo. It was so messy and out of character with the original release.

This thing won't happen. What i might do is bring attention to nintendo and what fans actually would like to see.

My problem with the DS version is the controls because they don't work as well as they should and I find the camera even worse then 64's camera.
