Super Mario Galaxy is the truest 3D representation of a 2D Mario game.

It was understandable in the sense that Super Mario 64 was meant to show off the capabilities of the Nintendo 64. Traversing a world in 3D was a new concept completely, and it would be fully fleshed out in later Rare platformers. It was great to not have boundaries, and the varied landscapes really kept the game interesting throughout. Super Mario Sunshine was a great game, but it is definitely not the amazing follow-up I was expecting. Water levels have always been my least favorite, and they have been killed off in most games completely, but Nintendo went ahead and had it as the central focus. It was okay, given that we still went to some varied locales, like a harbor and a hotel. However, the worst part is... the places just weren't interesting. The great sense of wonderment that Super Mario 64 was killed off, and I really felt that there wasn't a whole lot of imagination to it. Super Mario Galaxy is a different game all together. It is linear, just like the 2D games, and has you overcoming obstacles in the immediate area. The gravity, while never fully realized or fleshed out, is still put to good use in a wide array of ways. It traded off the exploration, but the actual missions felt like a blast from the past, especially with some of the 2D Mario references, including the costumes. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is looking to one-up what the original set out to do in every conceiveable way. I'm looking forward to Super Mario Bros. 3 difficulty. The Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 is too hard and New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario World are far too easy. Number 3 is perfect. Just post some of your expectations, speculations, and talk about the evolution of the 3D Mario series. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the subject matter.

Agree that Galaxy feels like a true succesor to Mario World. It's like they chucked out any form of consistancy or logic, and just went all out for abstract insanity. This is of course a good thing :D Seeing airplanes, cities and helicopters in a Mario game(Sunshine) was just wrong imo...

I should give Mario Sunshine a go some time. It sounds like something different from the Mario norm although the amount of dialogue people mention doesn't sound very appealing.

Mario Sunshine is a very difficult game. I beat Galaxy, but never beat Sunshine. Many levels are too hard and I die a lot.

Come to think of it Mario 64 seems quite hardcore in comparison to Galaxy even though Mario 64 is, fundamentally, an easy game.

I got bored of galaxy so fast. I found that mid way through, I just started rushing through doing the bare minimum needed to beat the game :(

This. I always liked 2D mario games better than the 3D games.

Galaxy was an awesome game no doubt, but I do prefer the 2d mario games aswell over the 3d ones.

I gotta say though that Mario Sunshine was underrated, I had alot of fun with that one.

Sunshine is the worst Mario game because the GC didn't innovate in any areas (N64 = 3D, Wii = Motion / IR, GC = graphics), so they had to come up with a concept (FLUDD)

Super Mario Galaxy > Most 2D Marios > Sunshine / Mario 64

Mario is a platformer, not sandbox mode game. I prefer the linear approach in 3D marios, they feel like a 2D game but in 3D, which I love.

I dunno... maybe software innovation is something Nintendo should try more often. It worked for Metroid Prime.

It doesn't feel as fresh and new as with hardware innovation. Same can be said on the handheld space, first Stulys and now 3D, it feels new and fresh.

Wind Waker isn't that innovative software? They used graphics in their advantage, and it worked.

That's why I love Nintendo, I like innovation that works. Dual-Analog in FPS games are highly out-dated, I hope Sony will implement Move in FPS games.

Actually the Gamecube's graphics chip was exceptionally good at generating water effects in its day. That is what probably inspired Mario Sunshine.

And thats pretty much the only major flaw SMG has. If SMG2 corrects this it'll be sex in disc form.

I agree with you guys whole heartedly. i don't know how SMG is the second highest rated game of all time. Maybe it's just me, but while it was good, it wasn't as great as reviewers made it out to be.

The only reason Sunshine is underrated is because it's too hard for a lot of folks. Galaxy fixes that, and improved on it in every way.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you. Galaxy did not feel like the classic 2D Mario games at all. But it doesn't matter anyways since we finally have a modern 2D Mario games on the DS and Wii.

galaxy is fantastic....but the one thing thats really lacking in the 3d marios compared to the 2d counterparts is just the sheer lunacy. sunshines biggest problem was that it was to....well...normal. galaxy went a long way to move from a normal setting (relatively speaking) to something approaching crazy again. but only crazy..not bat s&*t lunacy like mario 3 or world. i know alot of people are worried about galaxy 2 loosing the hub in favour of a map....but if that map is like super mario world where there are many secrets and shortcuts and loads of hidden extras.....then that would be one step towards the 3d greatness. the other thing they need to sort out is the secrets...the ducking on a certain white block or finding the alternate finishing point of a level. if they can also nail that (and make the hidden goals more challenging to reach of course) then gaalaxy 2 will be very very close to the lunacy of 3 and world.

The World Map is probably going to be like the NSMB one on DS. There will be paths cut of, but it's not secret in the sense of SMW. Don't get your hopes up.

Insanity is definately a great thing for Mario :D Like that pink transvestite dinosaur thing, Birdo, that shoots eggs, wears a bow, but is apparently a man... Yes Nintendo, yes! More of that ****!

Mario World is very easy... Mario 3 was hard! And the Lost levels was just silly hard!
