I just got ahold of this a couple of days ago, and I have to admit, I'm so pleased with the direction Paper Mario has taken. Sure, the turn-based battles were fun, sure, the greater degree of non-linearity was fun, but IMO, the latest is by far the best in the series, and takes a much-needed turn.

What do you guys think, and why?

I found the story in Thousand-Year Doors better and funnier, but the combat was more fun, too easy though :?.

Half and half. I like the platofrming over turn based, but the game was too linear, too wordy, and not as funny.

Personally I prefer the first two by a wide margin.

SPM did have cool art direction though.

I thought Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, but Super Paper Mario was seriously awesome and a lot of fun. The only thing that I didn't like about Super Paper Mario was 7-3. Oh... my... God..

I'm happy they took the direction they did with Super Paper Mario. Sure, another turn-based game would've been fine by me, but Nintendo decided to do something different, and I liked that. It felt fresh and new, and I thought the flip from 2D to 3D was pretty awesome. The only problem was that the levels felt a bit empty and barren when in 3D.

All games in the Paper Mario series are AAA titles to me.

Agreed. Because Super Paper mario focused on platforming, the gameplay depth was lost, it was just too easy, the items were worthless and there were no badges. :( The story wasn't as good as the others either.

I thought TTYD was way better. I liked the art style, but I disliked the platforming in SPM.

I loved the story in Super Paper Mario, but as for gameplay, I'm going to have to say the original (never played Thousand Year Door).

If you're referring to me, if never playing Thousand Year Door deserves a slap, than you never having played Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber deserves a slow and painful death. Doesn't matter how good TYD is, I know that PoLC is far better by comparison, and because you never playing it pales next to the sin of never playing thousand year door.

Super Paper Mario felt like a chore to me. Beat it, didn't really look back.

I'd have to pick the first as my favorite, mainly due to pure nostalgia. But I had loads of fun with the first two.

Pound for pound,I found Thousand Year Door to be the best of the games, although I adore them all equally.I like them each for different reasons.Personally,I found Super Paper Mario to be the funniest of the franchise, primarily based on much of the gamer humor in parts like Chapter 3 and 6 (the full Sammer Guy challenge).

It was good for a change. But I could use another Mario RPG.

It was still fun, but the whole 2d/3d switch left a lot of empty space.

Heh heh....believe me, I think TYD comes in as a VERY close second. I almost felt sad finishing it, I got so into it. Everything from the mini-platformers to the awesome partners made it my favourite turn-based RPG of all time. And yet....I'm not a big fan of turn-based (SRPGs are okay). Getting rid of the boring-ass fights against countless goombas make SPM the winner to me.

I think the original is the best, simply because it felt the most "Mario" of the 3. The other 2 are tied, imo. SPM had the best story of all the Mario games, though. I hope SPM becomes its own series and the Paper Mario series goes back to its roots. Heck, I'll take a new entry in either styIe any day.

I like SPM, but it was way too easy, and PM was a lot more memorable IMO. However it's story is the best story in a mario game.

Although I greatly enjoy platforming, as it got me into gaming, there are some games that should stick to their own roots. I'd rather Super Paper Mario have being a Turn Based Platformer like it used to be. :P

I personally liked TTYD, then PM64, then SPM. I preferred the Turn Based combat of the first 2 over the simplified platforming of SPM. I hope they go back to the turn based on the next one. I also miss the depth of the badges.

The original is the best if you ask me. Great story, great characters, great gameplay, great music, just a great game overall. I still play it on the VC to this day.

Super Paper Mario is the worst of the series. It turned an imaginitive series of RPGs into a generic sidescroller. I think that Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is the best in the series.

Super Paper Mario is better than the first two Paper Mario games.
