According to that interview (the video) it was said the problems that sup com on 360 had were technical and UI problems which the devs admitted, they said this was mostly due to sheer scope of the game and they did not have enough time to optimize it properly. With the sequel however they are aggressively optimizing the 360 and PC version (The studio is currently stress-testing the game on machines that go as low as a 2.8GHz processor with a single gigabyte of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 6800 graphics card), and are pushing more visuals to boot. They are also using the UI of existing console RTS in addition to their own to try to make the gameplay and interface as good as possible. So anyone think this game will push the RTS boundaries on consoles? The game itself looks awesome on PC but since the devs are putting so much work into the console version (rather than half assing it) do you think we can actually see RTS with some depth work well on consoles?

Its not that RTS's cant be done on consoles. Its just the controls will limit any kind of growing competitive play. Look at Starcraft for example. The game grew because of its insane play style among pros. Lets face it, an RTS is not fun without the crazy macros, Insane rushes, and skillful/strategic game play. On consoles it could work, but it will all boil down to a slow moving game because the controls limit you to only a few things at a time. So no, in that respect RTS's will never blossom on consoles.

Maybe, but that wouldn't be much considering how BFME 2 is the only worthwhile RTS on consoles.

Why Dont they just make Mouse and keyboard support for RTS games on consoles? it makes no sense... I remember half life on the PS2 had mouse and keyboard support and it worked great.

I haven't completed the campaign in Halo Wars yet so I didn't include it in my mind. I was picking between RA3 and BFME2 on the 360. From what I have played of Halo Wars, the gameplay is rather dry, and the only thing that was pushing me to keep on playing it was the knowledge that there would be a badass cutscene at the end of each level :P

This is a major assumption people make about SupCom 1 on 360, the port was horrible but the controls were actually done very well for such a complicated game. This was co-developed too, so if this turns out well it could have a huge affect on RTS games coming out in the future.

By necessity, the fact that console controllers have fewer buttons means that the inputs will become fewer, and then the complexity of the game will be dramatically reduced. This is fine for newbies, who don't have enough experience with the genre to really know any better, but experts of the genre won't be fooled. They will expose the game for what it truly is -- as a relatively shallow game.

I love the original Supreme Commander, and I hope the sequel will be better, but I doubt it. The fact that consoles are even in mind during development is almost confirmation that the game's been made less complex. At this point in time, the only way to make an RTS on consoles is to do something completely different from what's being done on PCs, such as Herzog Zwei (it's actually the original RTS, but still) or Pikmin.

BFME2 use to be my main game on Xbox360. Hell, it was my first Xbox360 game. I sold it long ago, though.

I wonder if the game will be downgraded because of that. Perhaps is for the best, Supreme Commander was insanely hardcore, at least it means it will run on myPC. It feels kinda sad that after 3 years the game loos the same though, graphics improvment have really stopped, never thought it would be this way a few years ago.

As much as I hail RTS games on consoles, they simply aren't powerful enough for the RTS madness . Try moving 50 mammoth tanks on the 360 in Command and Conquer 3 . Look at supreme commander . It's the ultimate test case (together with Crysis) to see what your PC is capable of . If I start the game on my notebook , the battery is dead within 10 minutes :)

I have Red Alert 3 on ps3 and it is quite difficult to play a rts on a console. Also I played Starcraft 64 and it is way different from the PC Starcraft. As for now, PC seems to be the only way for have fun with RTS because the console controllers lack all the buttons needed for make all the crazy stuff like in Starcraft or Warcraft.

Needs design *suited* to consoles. Not this, and not RTSs lacking complexity like Halo Wars. It would work very well.

Halo Wars is an AWESOME game. I feel like it's the only console rts that got things completely right. And the streamlined base building, I thought, was the perfect balance between the differences of DoW 1 and DoW 2 (Too much base building as compared to none). And anybody who tries making an RTS on a console really needs to check out how Halo Wars made the controls work.

Personally though, I just got SupCom 1 for my PC about a week ago, and, assuming that the second one is going to be at least as complex and massive, I really can't see it working on a console.

What I'm really looking forward to is R.U.S.E.

After majority of console RTSes flopped badly I think SuPCom2 might be the last chance this genre will have this gen to make it on consoles, altough most likey it will fail anyway

I think if there was one RTS that could have worked out on consoles, it would be Dawn of War II. SupCom has a scale and design too complex for a gamepad.

What about C&C Tiberium War and Kane's Wrath? Halo Wars is also debatable. Anyway, I think SupCom 2 might score AAA on PC, while 8.5 on 360, and that'd be a huge win.

They're definitely better on PC, that's for damn sure. I still think that Halo Wars and EndWar were good on xbox though.

.. No.. Intil consoles adapt to mouse and keyboard for at least RTS/strategy games.. They are and always will be inferior to the pc.. The point being, is if your a rts/strategy fan in general, the system to go to is the PC.

I think every RTS on consoles should use Halo Wars gameplay formula. The game chould have been amazing if it wasnt the lack of content.

Idoubt supreme commander 2 wouldbe a great game, the 1st oneis a horrible game...yes it has appealing gameplay, but it optimizes computer poorly.

No one runs smoothly in4v4pmaps, and what's point of making it if majority pc gamers cannot run in 2007. Even at 2010,81x81k maps is still unplayable on most ppl's pc. I have Q9300, Ati 4670m 6GB ram, and I can still feel laggy after it reaches couple thousands units on the map. It makes online matches very unplayable too, cuz even ifyour pc is fine at 20x20 or 40x40k map, but your opponents lag, the whole game would lag too.

I strongly disagree. Halo Wars felt like an uninspiring shell, the mechanics there were far too basic, and even RTS games that follow a similar template on consoles like RA3 have much more interesting units and abilities for tactics to employ. Personally I think World in Conflict would be perfect. The action is consistent, its fast paced, and plenty of micromanagement that could be done very well on a controller. And the multiplayer would fit almost perfectly. While it might be an alternate to the foundations Ground Control set, and scales back the tactics at the players disposal, in favor of action and quick tactics, it has enough complexity and emphasis on team work, coordination and timing to keep it compelling. Saying that Dawn of War 2 could work as well, thought it might be a bit fiddly with the sheer amount of management and abilities of units.

No.

SupCom is a PC game with such depth and complexity that cannot be emulated on a console with good results.

Unless they dumb down the game, wich at this point wouldn´t really surprise me,since many developers seem to to do this when publishing games for consoles(althugh SupCom2 is being developed mainly for the PC).

Great series were almost ruined when they took the console aproach(ex: Deus Ex Invisible War).

Thank god Blizzard is not doing this foolishness with Starcraft 2(or Diablo 3).

[QUOTE="Pinkyimp"]Its not that RTS's cant be done on consoles. So no, in that respect RTS's will never blossom on consoles.Totalgym9000
Why Dont they just make Mouse and keyboard support for RTS games on consoles? it makes no sense... I remember half life on the PS2 had mouse and keyboard support and it worked great.

Or perhaps say when the next Sup Com is out they release it with a cheap but effective USB Mouse and a Keypad not a Key board but something either specific for that game or a perphial designed for RTS games.

Because console controllers have fewer buttons, therefore fewer potential inputs, therefore a smaller possibility space, therefore less complexity, therefore it is dumbed down.

I haven't played it, but I'm sure it was. I'm also going to assume that the game was not as optimal play-wise as the PC version. The goal of developers is to make a friendly game, and complex RTSes on consoles are not friendly. So the devs have a choice: complex RTS on console (which is technically possible, but pointless) or a relatively shallow RTS that plays well (also a fine possibility, I'm not dissing, but a compromise).

Well its a given that its going to play best on PC. But even the trash port that SupCom 1 was on 360, the controls worked well and even more so as the game is big and complex. Since then, console RTSs have gotten better with controls and im sure theyll lift those ideas.

I wouldn't call taking out two main features of the game: huge maps and huge number of units ....being "intact gamewise"
