I'm talking about games with little hype that turned out great:

Dead Space: Very well done TPS survival horror, much better than RE5.

The Witcher: Very engaging game.

Prototype: Tons of sandbox freedom and gore.

X-men Origins: Wolverine: Very good gameplay and unxpectedly good for a movie title.

Team Fortress 2: Tons of DLC and gameplay stays interesting

Blazblue: Forgot about this one, best fighting game online experience

Red Faction Guerilla : Great destructable buildings

Batman Arkum Asylum: Best Batman game to date!

Solid List, but I would Remove PROTOTYPE, and add Bioshock. That lists seems a bit PC/360 heavy though...

Did anyone play Hulk Destruction Last Gen, Prototype was made by the same team, and I saw a lot of "Hulkisms" in their followup game. It's like ACTIVISION wanted to bypass paying Marvel, make it Mrated and gory, and expected sales.

Well, they got sales, but it's not a sleeper hit. It's a solid game, but not as amazing for those that have played Hulk.

So here's some :

Heavenly Sword, BlazBlue, BoomBlox, Bioshock (It sold pretty good so maybe not), Infamous (That surprised many folks, including me), and No More Heroes.

Bioshock would have been a strong sleeeper if it wasnt for the demo. I think it released a month before the game and in that month i remember it getting hyped like mad.

For me personally, i would say

Kameo, Dead or Alive 4...Actually, i remember these games being hyped quite a bit before release, they would probably go in the 'forgotten category'

Now i would say Persona 3 and 4 (i dont care what you guys say, they're current gen).....thats pretty much all i can think of right now. Anything with a glimmer of goodness has been hyped pretty much by all the fanboys.

I meant surprise hit as being the game wasn't hyped like KZ2 or Halo that still turned out to be great.

Well, then technically InFamous bests Prototype for 2009 according to critics, and here at GS as well. However, a gamer with only a PC or 360 may not have bothered to beat the game.

That's why I mentioned the critics, since they have access to both games.

For me, nothing impressed me this gen. I am still expecting a Freelancer sequel or something of the type. I did enjoy dead space but after playing it once then there was no more incentive to continue, all that was left was the military suit which you can get with a new play-through (really not impressive to say the least; also the scares became lackluster when you basically know everything, it's no DMC1 that's for sure,in other words:replayable).

I never said protoype was better than infamous. But infamous did get alot of hype before release and met said hype.

Yeah I know SC was hyped alot the final days before release, but so is every game, but before that it was very silent.

TF2 and Prototype little hype, your kidding right?. I'll agree about Dead Spce though, it wasn't hyped that much and it's a fantastic game IMO

I felt Prototype had far more marketing, hype, commercials than Infamous. eh.

Not much really, the witcher and dead space where pretty good, also fallout 3, cod4, bad company, uncharted, killzone 2... but not much and far cry 2...believe it or not i liked it, i also liked alone in the dark.... As for bioshock, mass effect, gta iv.....Meh, just meh, very inferior to the previous products.

Battlefield Bad Company. It turned out to be a very fleshed out shooter with some excellent action. I don't think anybody thought a console Battlefield game could be that good.

Hm... Valkyria Chronicles belongs on that list. I'm not too sure Batman does though. It always looked pretty solid to me.
