The Nintendo Switch has now sold over 122 million consoles. It seems this beast just cant be stopped. Only two consoles stand in its way. The Nintendos DS and PS2 are the only two remaining. Which is amazing for a console that didnt rely on gimmicks like a DVD player to help boost its numbers.

I can see it overtaking both competing consoles in future. A switch is present in every gamers home, just like GTA V is.

@R4gn4r0k:

For now it is a step drop YOY. Over 22%. If that trend continues it won't reach DS and PS2 levels. But maybe it will recover for holidays

What is a 3DS? A handheld.

What is a ps2? A console.

What is a Switch? A console and a handheld, farming both playerbases at once. The fact that its not destroying the PS2 by a large margin is saying a lot about the quality of the Switch🥱

It's a handheld. My mobile can be hooked up to a TV, is it a console?

@mesome713: Rely on DVD? How about merging two markets. Switch was pretty much guaranteed success considering its the only Nintendo platform on the market for its generation after normally having 2. I like my Switch and all but it was set up for success more than any console ever.

I dunno. Does your mobile come with a TV connected dock that upgrades its graphics?

Nice comeback from Nintendo after the Wii U.

I wonder how much longer will it last, considering the current state of the world's economy and how conservative Nintendo is.

@Litchie: going from 720p to 1080p for SOME titles is a graphics upgrade? How does the Switch Lite fit into this. No dock to speak of there...

It doesn't connect to a TV. It's a handheld.

Always thought handheld was just short for handheld console.

A phone is a phone, but it's just different types of computers.

A phone can be a console if you want. Just like you can use a PC like a console and never have to quit that experience.

Lets not play games, its farming both sides, something no other systems have ever done.

The Switch was a smash hit for Nintendo.

Both software and hardware are breaking sales records. Mario Kart 8, Breath of the Wild, Mario Party, Smash Bros, Fire Emblem. Ton of new IPs too. It's just a shame Nintendo has had to neglect a lot of former IPs.

Yup. Handhelds are consoles. But Sony fanboys have to try to undermine the sales of the Switch somehow.

Also the biggest difference between handhelds & consoles were always the games.

Home consoles had Super Mario Bros while the handheld received super Mario Land.

A handheld game is always seen as a lighter, smaller and more bite sized experience.

Sony was a real innovater here offering console experiences on PSP and Vita, and then even offering two versions of each game. You could play certain games on PS3 and then carry on where you left off on Vita.

Nintendo Switch really is an advancement on that Vita concept. But instead of cross saves and cross play you just get one system that does it both.

It's nice seeing games that weren't succesful on Wii U thrive again on Switch.

Wish Sony would do that too: release a native PS5 version of The Last Guardian running at 60fps. Re-release gravity Rush 2 on PS5 etc...

Not that impressive when you consider that the Wii and Nintendo DS sold 250 million units combined in one generation. The Switch combined both markets and is cross generational.

@Sagemode87: wrong, the handheld market is gone, it's not 2005, we have smart phones nowadays. Nintendo knew the pure handheld market was gone because of iPhone and androids, so they made the hybrid switch. It was a smart move to make the hybrid.

Congrats to the switch. We all knew they could do it. Amazing job!

The ps2 really sold as a gimmick. I remember for the first couple of years, people were buying it because it was the cheapest DVD player on the market, and this was during the time when the market shifted away from vhs and onto DVD. There was a huge market craze for DVD in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Yes, the Nintendo Switch's hybrid design, which allows it to be used as both a home console and a handheld device, was a major factor in its success. By combining two markets, Nintendo was able to offer a unique product that was appealing to a wide range of players, and the fact that it was the only Nintendo platform available during its generation also helped boost its sales. The Switch's strong lineup of exclusive games and its portability further added to its appeal. Overall, the combination of factors set the stage for the Switch's success, and it's clear that it has been a major success for Nintendo.

PS2 DVD player a gimmick?! Yeah sure... when the Nintendo Switch relied on gimmicks like toys (amiibos) and cardboard boxes which you have to pay on top of the Switch.

@omegamaster: @Zero_epyon: he kind of has a point. When the PS2 came out DVD players were expensive, sometimes even more than a PS2.

That was the reason my dad bought it right when it came out (only game he played was ATV off road fury lol) not knocking it. Was a genius buisness move.

Every console has its selling points. But to say the PS2 sold so much because of a dvd playing feature and not because of the massive library it had is disingenuous. And to call it a gimmick is even worse. (BTW I think I had that game too lol)

Despite there being more gamers, newer consoles have yet to match the sales of a 22 year old system. If the Switch does, it will be about damn time.

The fact that the PS2's sales have been so strong over the past 22 years is a testament to the console's popularity and longevity. If the Switch were to surpass the PS2's sales, it would certainly be a major accomplishment and a reflection of the Switch's widespread appeal and continued success. However, it's worth noting that the video game market has changed significantly since the release of the PS2, and it's not an direct comparison.

@hardwenzen: No, it’s more like handheld gamers don’t need another handheld because another one isn’t available and Switch fills that void simultaneously with filling the console void. Your argument really doesn’t make sense.

Back in 2000, the fact PS2 had built in DVD player and was a game system was a HUGE selling point. Sony knocked it out the park at launch. It made the Dreamcast irrelevant and took Sega out of the console race. PS2 did not have the huge game catalogue it would eventually gain over the years. Also got to mention it got a 18 month head start before GameCube or og Xbox launched. These factors most definitely lead to the PS2s massive success.

it was a dvd player my friend. People were buying it as a dvd player because it cost $299, and back then a stand alone dvd player cost around $399. There was a craze for DVD players around that time, the matrix dvd just released and there was a huge shift away from VHS. I still remember the craze over DVD, nothing came close to it. Blu Ray wasn't even close, DVD was massive, and sony caught the wave. No media format was as big as DVD.

DVD players launched in 1996 but back then it was still crazy expensive, at like $1000. Then when ps2 launched at $299, it made all the dvd players that were selling for $399, $499 and up irrelevant.

I agree. I'll also add that the PS2 was still being sold in decent numbers well into the PS3 generation. I believe it's the only Sony console to be produced for twelve years.

That's correct. Unlike some other consoles that have used additional features, such as a DVD player, to increase sales, the Nintendo Switch has relied solely on its unique hybrid design and strong lineup of exclusive games to drive its success. This approach has allowed the Switch to stand out in the market and appeal to a wide range of players, and has helped it to become one of the best-selling video game consoles of all time.

What Nintendo did with the Switch is impressive but, they also 100% cannibalized their handheld revenue with the Switch (and had to imo). Ex. Did you know Nintendo was making more money during the Wii / DS days than they ever did with Switch? Crazy, huh?

PlayStation on the other hand is making like 2x revenue since their PS2 days. In fact, they make a PS2 generation worth of profit basically every year at this point. lol

@SolidGame_basic:

They've already made more money from the Switch than they ever did from the combined DS/Wii era so that era is thoroughly trounced.

Taking your assertion at face value we'd have to be stupid enough to think Nintendo needs to sell 255+ million Switch units to outdo that generation.

And nobody is really that ignorant, right my friend?

Surely not.
