Switch turns one year old today. Is it the best first year for a console?

I would say the Switch is a massive success. Great content, lots of support, lots of sales. It’s got people excited about Nintendo again. It’s arguably one of the best first years in gaming history. Where would you rank it , SW? Best ever? Top 5? Or not at all?

I don't think the Switch needs anyone in SW too think it's a success. The sales numbers are in

Yeah it has definitely been a great first year for the Nintendo Switch. Is it the best ever for any console? I don’t know but it certainly belongs in the top 5 that’s for sure. I’ve been having a great time with my Switch and there’s quite a few games currently available that I need to get to get caught up.

The switch is an abysmal system. It is designed for babies yet very flimsy. Most of its games are ports as side from Mario which holds your hand

After becoming the fastest selling console in US history (along with all of it's other achievements along the way), it's without question one of the very best first year success stories EVER.

Switch 1 year anniversary shows how hard Nintendo work and totally learned there lessons from the Wii U mistakes and went something newer and the return of innovation is what Nintendo is good for. Switch is now the fastest selling console, they were really hard to find back then and now, still continues meeting the market's demands.

Happy 1st anniversary Nintendo Switch :)

They still have a lot to learn though.

Online functionality has barely improved from the Wii/DS days. The console has no way to back up save data (you cannot backup to SD card or cloud). Nintendo refuses to give up on motion controls.

I'm saying this as a sheep.

For me yes.

I've bought more games for the thing then any other console. It also has the best games in the first year imo than any other as well.

Yes. Much better than the Wii U years.

It reminds me of what is happening economically in the U.S. since November 2016, compared to what happened in the years before it.

As far as Online functionality goes, until Nintendo opens there online service subs, it's hard to tell how for they come.

Yes I think it is and it's interesting to see some of you agree because I've never seen the internet be so negative about a launch lineup before. There have never been so many posts so negative (and video's from reviewers so negative) about a console's lineup as with the Switch.

Xb1 and Ps4 didn't get tons of negative content made about how bad their launches were. There were a few but it was never made into a reason for the console to not have a future. With the Switch they were constantly saying that only Mario and Zelda means there was nothing there yet. That those games didn't mean anything. That you shouldn't buy the console if the first year only included a mainline Zelda and Mario title. To me that is a stark contrast to their reactions to the xb1 and ps4 lineups that didn't even have a Mario or Zelda title. But that was pretty much glossed over.

If the contrast of the media's response was based on the Wii U then they really haven't learned much about how generations work in the gaming industry. A successor carries over very little from the predecessor. They have almost nothing to do with each other.

It's had a cracking first year but it has to keep it up, which is the hard part.

And remember, a console generation is a marathon not a sprint and PS4 is proving to be the marathon king so far with it's sheer consistency.

Sure looks like a handheld to me. Just because you can plug it into a TV like a lot of other devices doesn't make it a console.

I think so. I'm having trouble remembering a better first year for a new launch. Maybe the Dreamcast? Many of its great games were probably at least near the first year. Can't really recall

What baffles me is how Nintendo is able to get a do-over with some of the once Wii U titles that have now become Switch titles. Crazy.

I honestly think Nintendo has had their best year since the SNES. Some great games have released on the Switch. I only have three gripes so far.

1. No Virtual Console

2. No Smash Bros yet

3. Mario Odyssee load screen trying to get me to use those ridiculous Joycons.

That said, PS1 and PS4 had better launch years for me personally.

@n64dd: Dude. It's a non-skipable 20-30 second ad to play a game a way I won't be playing it. Ever. It's almost as annoying as fanboys on these boards.

If it was skipable, I wouldn't care.

As far as games go, hell yes.

Everything else though. No way. The OS, eShop, online functionality, non-gaming apps, they all suck. I really feel like Switch OS was basically unfinished upon release, and it puzzles me further that it still hasn't changed much.

It's easily one of my favorite consoles of all time and I'm glad Nintendo has a winning formula on their hands because I've always wanted a powerful handheld that I can easily plug to the TV. Its first year is easily in the top 3 for me and could potentially be the best one but that involves many factors. As far as sales and quality of games it's definitely number 1 but it still lacked in the diversity of games and third party was decent but no real big exclusive which definitely cannot place it as number 1 in that regard.

It's still a tremendous success and I'm looking forward to the future games (and those features that are missing :/)

Allow me to retort.

Eshop is clean and simple. What's wrong with it?

Non gaming apps. Well we got Hulu. But if you ask me it's good they get Netflix at bay. PS4 launched as the expensive netflix machine. Who wants to be known for that?

The online - fuctionality is fine. I think you're referring mostly to the lack of voice chat. Other than that, online works perfect when I play splatoon 2 and arms online.

And the OS, again, clean and simple. You really want them to clutter it up with nonsense?

Porting from a failed console that "no one" played isn't exactly a bad thing. In fact, it might be the first time ever that ports are a really good thing. The Wii U had great games and they deserve a second chance.

Now show all the games on PS4 including 3rd party...... Just because Switch doesn't have the same 3rd party support doesn't mean it's not a PS4 advantage.

After all you've included Mario vs Rabbids which was made by Ubisoft..... a 3rd party developer.

And some of those Switch games are on other platforms so shouldn't count.... just like TLOU:R shouldn't.

@UssjTrunks: Reviews are opinions. You stated the fact that someone else's opinion is that these games scored that well in order to support your own opinion.

In short... stated opinions.
