Tactics Ogre PSP - UPDATE pictures, info 56k

Fifteen years after the release of the original game, Square Enix is getting the old Quest gang together to create the "ultimate version" of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for the PSP.

Developer Quest released the original Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for the Super Famicom back in 1995. Fifteen years later, the game still makes regular appearances in Japanese gaming mag Famitsu's "Top 20 games voted by readers".

Now Square Enix gets the old Quest team back together for another go at Tactics Ogre. Director Hiroshi Minagawa, character designer Akihiko Yoshida, game designer Yasumi Matsuno, and composers Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata have all returned to "revitalize their masterpiece for a new format and era – created with the simple idea – how TACTICS OGRE would be if it was developed and played now."

What a compelling was to handle a remake. What's come of this idea?

You've got the same story from the original release, with upgraded graphics and a rearranged score, courtesy of the original composers. There are new characters, a Battle Skill system to help bolster the existing Magic and Special Ability system, new character growth mechanics, and something called the Wheel of Fortune system, which promises to extend replayability.

The Wheel of Fortune system, whatever that is, is so important that the Japanese version of the game is actually being called Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fortune. I'm sure we'll learn more as development continues.

This is pretty awesome news for strategy RPG fans. The original Tactics Ogre is just as satisfying today as it was 15 years ago. The additional love for the PSP version is just icing on the cake.

No ETA has been given for the release of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for the PSP.

It's the same genre as Disagaea, but more challenging and with more of a serious emphasis on storytellilng.

Keeps getting better. You can never have too many strategy games.

How so? It probably wont offer as much content as a Disgaea game if that's what you're getting at.

I don't think so. It was literally just announced.

I would have preferred a new entry in the FFT series, but PSP owners can't ask for much I suppose. The Tactics Ogre franchise is very dated compared the SRPG's now. There aren't a wide variety of spells, and each battle tends to drag on for about 45 minutes or more. Another average remake for PSP.

You do realize that it was a very early SRPG for the super nintendo that's getting an update? FFT is basically a continuation of Tactics Ogre.

Also, its not unusual for battles in SRPGs to span 2 hours.

I updated the thread twice over. I didn't include everything, but I may create a better organized blowout thread later on.

Hmmm keeps getting better :P I'm more interested now.

The lighting effects in the game make it particularly beautiful.

I've never enjoyed SRPG's from Squareenix for some reason. The story often feels too heavy and the gameplay a little clunky.

I prefer the Disgaea take on the genre.

I sure hope they change Neutral Route so it's not just "Pile on more Undead" the whole way through. Also, if that is Zaebos, they really went out of their way to make him as gruesome as possible.

Well Valkyrie Profile was sort of a Tri-Ace thing with a S-E treatment. And there's been a new Tactics game relatively recently.

I never played it.... but it looks dreadful.

Game looks good. I'm a big fan of the FFT series, and while I've never played this game, I've heard nothing but good things.

I'll pick it up.

I've always thought "Let Us Cling Together" is the best subtitle for anything, right after "Person of Lordly Caliber".

Makes me wish all SRPGs didn't put me to sleep.

Those last few screens look gorgeous. Haven't played the game but I've heard nothing but good things from it. Can't wait for it to release.

Right. Which is a remake. The same thing could be said of REmake when it was released in 2001.

It's not an enhanced port, because they can't really take anything directly from the original in order to save themselves time. Mostly because despite being 3D replicas, they can't take the maps from the original ver of the game. That and the gameplay itself has new features and has to be rebalanced. I'm fairly certain it's being built from the ground up.

Edit: Actually, I didn't realize it before but it does look like they are using the game's original sprites and textures, but edited to look nicer on the PSP. Regardless, I still think the game itself is being built off of the PSP, and isn't a carry over from the SNES.
