After expressing their intention to enable cross-platform multiplayer interaction for Team Fortress 2, Valve software has revealed that they already have people on Xbox 360 playing the Team Fortress sequel against PC users.

Team Fortress 2, which is included in the mega Half-Life 2 combo titled "The Orange Box," is an all-new version of Team Fortress, the legendary title that spawned team based multiplayer action games.

Speaking to our brothers at IGN, Valve's Robin Walker and Doug Lombardi confirmed that the developer have Xbox 360 and PC gamers playing together:

IGN: How far along are the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions?

Robin Walker:
So the Xbox one, we have people in on Xboxes, while you were playing [referring to IGN] there's people playing on Xbox 360s.

IGN: In that play session we just did?

Doug Lombardi:
Yeah there's always at least one guy, in there, that's an Xbox 360 guy.

IGN: So you're actually playing now on Xbox 360s connected to PCs?

Doug Lombardi:
Technically it's done

I agree with true_gamer, consoles and PC's shouldn't mix online unless you have kb/mouse on both. Doesn't really affect me since i will be picking it up for the ps3 which is only going to be online with other ps3's

Quite true, cross platform play, PC vs Console can't be good, at first many will do it, then after a little while it won't be so popular. PC will be naturally supperior due to having a mouse, consoles will have auto aim, or aim assist which is sort of like half-cheating.

From our perspective, we did the Xbox port of Half-Life internally, and we did that because we wanted to have the expertise from doing that. Like controller expertise and all the sorts of decisions you've got to make that are different on consoles we wanted to have that in-house because we knew we'd be doing more Xbox titles and more console titles. And so the same guys that did that are working on TF2, we have all the tweaks we did to the controls, the sticks and everything. One of the advantages of TF2, relative to something like Counter-Strike, is that it's not so much about aim. Some of the cl@sses like the sniper it is about aim, but as an engineer or a heavy or spy, aim's not too important, it's more about the decisions you're making other than aim. I mean heavy has a big hose so you just have to keep people somewhere in the middle of the screen and they're going to take damage from you.

Cl@ss is censored for some reason... :?

But what about the 360 players who want to use sniper? and even in the less aim intensive cl@sses mouse gives you better reaction time and better overall control.

Well, it's going to be an issue. I honestly can't say otherwise. You must remember that cross-platform doesn't mean PC vs. 360, it means PC w/ 360. You will have Xbox 360 players, and PC players on both sides, yet fanboys see this as a competition, and not a cooperation. Even then, any smart developer would include the ability to filter by platform.

If they put autoaim on the PC the community playing the game will be tiny. If they do not there will be nothing but PC players playing because the gamepad 360 players will get frustrated after losing so much and just stop playing.

Unless it is gamepade for both or KB/M for both, they should never cross.

I am aware of that but as a longtime PC fps player i am wary of anything that might lessen my experience. I hope they can find a way to make it well because it would be a good thing to extend the online community between pc/360 and hopefully someday include ps3 in there.

Then console players are at a disadvantage because kb/m >> gamepad for fps aiming.

so are they using MS live, or their own thing?

Because It doesnt seem like MS live will be popular on the PC, as long as people pay $50 only for cross-platform online play and nothing else....

So am I....I doubt Valve will abandon such a strong system like Steam.

But, how will it be Cross Platform, if the Console gamers dont have Steam.

Unfortunately EA UK is doing the PS3 version of the game, so (due to some sort of differing network issue) we won't see any cross-platform gameplay; however, I do worry that future games may provoke unneeded verbal wars between fanboys if a cross-console game is made.

Its not GFW that Im afraid of, at least their the actual content of the games are unchanged, its MS live that concerns me.

Live has way to much control over everything, if it stops us from Modding, or running modiefied dedicaded servers, then I am not even gonna try it.

Most Shooters for Xbox360/Xbox don't have Auto aim..

Gears of War, PDZ, CoD2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Counter-Strike Xbox, Unreal Championship(could turn it off)..

all didn't have Auto-Aim.

only casual games like Halo2 have it..

the only fps game ive experianced auto aim in was halo 2.

So idk,  i haven't seen it or felt it in any other game, and it's noticable when it's there.

Why are you saying i need to grow up? I am saying something that most people agree with, that kb/m is better than a gamepad for aiming. Because of this they might add in auto-aim to consoles to try and level the field, i wasn't attacking you in any way.

I just do not see how it could be fair.  even with auto aim on consoles, kb/m players would beat the crap out of console players.  the kb/m setup just allows for so much faster movment and it is easier to use reactive movements for fluidly.  i mean if console players dont mind being at a disadvantage all the time then i can see them implementing it but otherwise i just do see how it would work.  now if they would come up with a kb/m set up for the 360 then i am all in!
