This is a revised and extended version of the 10 most gruesome game series thread that I made earlier,found here: http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=27078517&page=1 First off thanks for reminding me guys,I really forgot about the postal and dead space series,but now I have included them in this list.Okay,here's my revised list of the 15 most gruesome game series ever: 15. Gears of war series Why did I choose it? Talk about sheer violence and gore,the gears of war series all contain over-the-top cold-blooded killing,chainsaw-ing and blood-pooling.As some of you may ask,why it didn't rank higher in this list?Well,because you are at least fighting as the good guy,unlike some games that will follow in this list....... 14. Ninja gaiden series Why did I choose it? The ninja gaiden series is both famous and infamous for it's graphic depictions of decapitations and blood-soaked violence,but what makes it even more brutal is that the insane level of challenge that accompanies it makes such gruesome combat tactics necessary to survive.Now to the next game in the list.... 13. God of war series Why did I choose it? There were lots and lots of violent and gory games before the god of war series,but only a few of them had a hell of an antihero as Kratos,the guy's brutal,nasty and as immoral as they come,he almost cares about no one except himself and his revenge,that's why the god of war series fits comfortably in the 13th spot in this list... 12. BioShock series Why did I choose it? One of the most atmospheric games ever made.The whole feeling that you are alone in an underwater city populated by insane citizens is enough to shiver your spine.Let alone the dead bodies littered all over the city,or the medical pavilion,which is one of the most disturbing game levels ever seen. 11. System shock series Why did I choose it? BioShock's spiritual predecessor,system shock 2,is by far one of the most frightening,disturbing and atmospheric games ever made.Not only you are in a space ship with mutated humans and zombies,but also the whole thing is very gory and scary. 10. Dead space series Why did I choose it? There's a famous saying that definitely applies to dead space: in space,no one can hear you scream.Besides it's very gory and atmospheric,earning it the No.10 spot in this list. 9. Silent hill series Why did I choose it? Silent hill may well be the scariest videogame series ever,boasting insanely scary and disturbing settings along with some of the goriest gameplay in any game. 8. Fallout series Why did I choose it? The fallout series all contain a crazy amount of limb-blowing and bloodshed,especially the 3rd one,but the ability to kill children in the 2nd one,along with the utterly bleak atmosphere and setting of the 3rd one easily propelled this series into the 8th spot in this list. 7. Resident evil series Why did I choose it? These games are insanely scary and frightening,not to mention immeasurably gory,there are exploding heads,flying limbs,and,most importantly,the chainsaw beheadings in resident evil 4,which to this day are the goriest deaths in any game,and perhaps any other entertainment form. 6. Doom series Why did I choose it? The doom series was one of the main reasons along with the mortal kombat series why the ESRB was founded,and it's easy to see why,because of it's visceral gameplay,satanic setting,grotesque enemies and because it was the game that made first person shooters what they are today. 5. Mortal kombat series Why did I choose it? Well,these games were,as mentioned earlier,the main reason behind the foundation of the ESRB,what more do I need to say?There are blowing limbs,decapitations,bloodshed,you name it,mortal kombat has it,not to even mention those completely gratuitous fatalities,which were mainly there just for the sake of violence. 4. Soldier of fortune series Why did I choose it? This series was designed literally to be as gruesome and gory as it could get,heck,even the bodies of enemies were modelled so that they could die in the most visceral and brutal way possible,ranging from blood fountains spraying from decapitated enemies to a pile of blood-soaked dead bodies,definitely the goriest first person shooter game series ever. 3. Grand theft auto series Why did I choose it? Here comes the game series that have stirred up worldwide controversies and attracted the most attention from videogame haters,there are alot of games that are more gory and bloody than this,but no game ever has allowed players to go on chainsaw rampages and cop-killing sprees like these games did,definetely the most controversial game series ever. 2. Postal series Why did I choose it? The postal series of games has garnered a massive amount of controversy,and the fact that the series was banned from 54 countries says something.These bans were mainly because of the player's ability to scare civilians until they urinate themselves,blow their limbs off,urinate on them and more.All of the gore and violence in postal can be completely gratuitous and can be performed on innocent civilians.So the series has garnered a widespread rejection due to it's explicit content,earning it the No. 2 spot in this list. 1. Manhunt series Why did I choose it? Now here's a game series that took violence a bit further in videogames,the motto of these games is simple: play and kill as brutal as you can.Not doom,soldier of fortune,postal,mortal kombat or ANY other game did manage to have the amount of violence and gore that manhunt had.Ever.The violence in manhunt is different from any other game,it's employed just for "fun",not for any other reason,not for being the good guy or even the bad guy.It's almost completely gratuitous,from the gruesome crowbar-to-the-skull executions to the toilet executions,they are all gratuitous,not to mention it's deppression-inducing atmosphere and setting,which all definitely earn the manhunt series the 1st place as the most gruesome game series ever made. Feed back would be appreciated.

mmm, pretty good, cept I would have moved God of War a bit lower down.

I don't know if GTA should be on the list, or at least not as far down as it is, the fact that you mentioned cop killing doesn't really add to gruesomeness; just immorality. It should be nearer the7-10 based on the violence & chainsaw massacre thing because as you said there are far more gory games out there. The game is more immoral than gruesome.

Good list, but I've played some adventure titles (graphic novels)from Japan and they put Gears and God of War to shame IMO.
