Stores weren't ordering it due to lack of interest. That's what it appeared to be "sold out". At launch they weren't going for much more than the retail price on ebay while the $600 version was fetching almost $1,600.
Consumers did not want the 20GB, get this in your heads people:|RagedRaldo54
bogus - it was consistently sold out, unlike the 60gb version, and was being sought out by many people as a "cheap" Blu-Ray player. That's just it, Sony was subsizing Blu-Ray rather than their gaming with the $500 PS3, and it simply wasn't worth it when they were losing so much money.
Sony used the claim of "lack of demand" when in reality they were simply unwilling to supply the PS3 for $500

By December of 2006 it's proven that people don't want to pay huge bucks for a games system. So what does Sony do? They get rid of the cheaper version of the PS3, leaving only the more expensive one.
Are these guys business idiots or what?

Again, bogus. Stores weren't getting more in because Sony wouldn't sell 20gb versions to suppliers - they had stopped manufacturing them, they did not exist, so stores were unable to get them. The "20gb PS3 wasn't in demand" is an absolutely *bogus* statement - every 20gb PS3 in stores sold out, every 60gb unit did not - even if fewer 20gb units were selling than 60gb, it still would make sense for a store to have them in stock, in the same way stores stock core 360s even though the premium / elite sell better.
As far as ebay pricing - the kind of person willing to spend $1600 on a system is not a price conscious consumer, they obviously want "the best" - this isn't reflective of the real world retail situation.
Sony lost two billion last year on the PS3 - I find it easier to believe that they don't want to subsidize the Blu-Ray player market by having a $500 model easier to buy than consumers not wanting to save $100 - the core 360 sells, and it's far more gimped that the 20gb PS3.
The core isn't gone from stores either - so why is the 20gb PS3? Sony's wallet is getting empty - not consumer demand.

So why is it you regularly saw 20GB models in January in many stores? In addition, Sony's wallet is nowhere near empty. Â

I worked retail during the period between the PS3 launch and january 2007 - the 20gb PS3s *always* sold out, we were left with plenty of 60gb PS3s. I talked to our store rep, I talked to the people who dealt with suppliers, we had trouble getting a supply of 20gb PS3s, Sony did not make as many of them. As far as selling them? No problems. Unlike the 60gb versions, which people would buy, then return a few days later when they realized the ebay prices had fallen to not much above retail.
No, Sony lost two billion last year on the PS3, and they are not keen on losing more money, that's common sense.

Good point.
[QUOTE="terrellpakeman"]Why did they discontinue it?Ezgam3rBecause they lost more money making the 20GB then the 60GB.
That is the real reason they discontinued it. Had nothing to do with what the customer though about it. Sony was just saying that to make them look good, as usual. Make it seem like they were doing something good for the fans.
i work at wal mart in LA and 20GB werent out of stock any more than 60GB, way more people bought the 60GB and we just stopped ordering 20GB. so your personal experience is not the fact of every store on the planet. uou still arent providing links to 20GB was sold out and had more demand than 60GB. you are just making stuff upChris-Hansen
I'm sorry... I have a friend who works for Walmart, and just, I'm sorry ... in any case. I'm not claiming that *more* people demanded the 20gb than the 60gb, there were fewer 20gb units produced. I'm just saying my experience has been that the 20gb was always sold out in Orlando. LA might be different, but the 20gb certainly sold.
I'm saying Sony stopped producing the 20gb PS3 because it was losing them too much money. Do I have a link? No - because that's not the story Sony wants to tell us. I know retailers who were trying to get more 20gb PS3s, and they were unable to from their suppliers. Ultimately it was Sony who cut the 20gb PS3 - and I don't buy the "lack of demand" story.
The core 360 isn't in demand either, but it still exists, Microsoft hasn't stopped producing them - so I find this "we stopped carrying them due to lack of demand" story hard to buy. When they posted their operating losses from the PS3 - I found it even harder to believe that the 20gb PS3 just evaporated because "oh people didn't want it"...

Yes, Sony did the right thing, it was just how they did it that wasn't proper. If you're losing more money with one system and less with another, you get rid of the one you are losing more money on. Simple math. The only real problem with this was that they could have probably sold more PS3's if they actually kept the 20GB version around. Oh well. It's a catch 22 really.

So stores weren't taking them, the stores that were weren't selling many, and overproduction and the low price had Sony losing money. And cutting off the 20GB version for these reasons is bad HOW?

Well, of course not. Sony PS3 fanboys believe just about everything Sony says. People need to read between the lines and see the real facts. The 20GB PS3 were in limited supply for a reason. The main reason they even created the 20GB system was just to draw people who couldn't afford the $600 version, into the store to look at the system and the games it play. If there is no 20GB available, which could have been the case in many retail stores, consumers could still shell out the extra $100 and get the 60GB version. This is called marketing to the public. It's a good stragety, but Sony realized they we losing even more money, and started cutting back on making the 20GB PS3. Within only 5 months of release, they canned it.

Yes, and it's because Sony was making the 60GB PS3 10-to-1 over the 20GB version. ;)

yeah now you took it too far, a company is not gonna make a whole new model and pay to the FCC for patents etc just as an advertising ploy, you make no sense dude.i doubt it. if you're willing to spend $500 on a gaming console, you'll probably spend and extra 100 for the best model.Ontain
Not really. I bought a $500 HDTV 27" over a $600 HDTV 32" - why? I didn't want to spend $100 more for a few extra inches of screen, especially when I knew I'd eventually be buying a 1080p HDTV. I built a $1000 gaming PC over an $1100 gaming PC, why? I didn't want to spend an extra $100 for a slightly more powerful graphics card, when I knew that significantly more powerful graphics cards would come out in a year.
When it comes time to buy my PS3, I would rather have the $500 20gb unit than the $600 60gb unit - I'd rather save $100 and run one of the 20' cables I have lying around to my PS3, than spend an extra $100 on hardware.
