Sony recently announced that the PS3 would get keyboard and mouse support for the release of Unreal Tournament 3 and that they would help support the modding community by uploading mods for download on the Playstation network.

So far Microsoft has flatout refused to give the 360 any keyboard and mouse support and it seems like this along with their refusal to allow modded conten onto the marketplace will end up costing them dearly.

Right now Microsoft has alot of good support from PC developers. There are already a few RTS PC ports out and with Supreme Commander just announced and World In Conflict and Universe At War on their way soon along with the release of Unreal Tournament 3 sometime next year. If there's any console that is begging for keyboard and mouse support it's the 360. When developers see the support Sony is giving to PC developers they'll soon be asking themselves..."Why should we have to delibratley cripple and re-design our entire game and interface to work round a clumsy console controller when we can just port it to thePS3 as it is?"

With a number of the 360's best games being PC and console exclusives (Gears, Bioshock etc.) losing the support of PC developers because of some prude weird taboo they seem to have could end up costing Microsoft dearly.

So wake up and smell the napalm Microsoft! This is a console war. If you're too prude to do it then someone else will and will reap the benefits on your behalf.

How is not having a KB/M fatal to the 360 :?

Not having any good games would be fatal which is the ps3's probem right now.

If I want to play with m/kb I'd play on the computer, not my console. I play on a console when I don't want to us m/kb. The addition of it on offline is an...ok idea...but online would be a horrible idea. It would create an unfair advantage when online when using m/kb over those not using it (since it's more precise with aiming), meaning you would have to spendmoney to even the game out. Also, you'd need a table too to use m/kb, you could easily drag on over, but that would be annoying to do every time. It's much easier to use the computer for this. LLong story short: Horrible idea due to online, ok for offline, bad for multiplayer offline, annoying...

I believe Microsoft is trying to keep some semblance of a division between the Xbox 360 and Games for Windows. They expect PC gamers to, astonishingly enough, play computer-style games on a PC.

I think that the lack of KB/M support is more indicative of a larger problem for the 360. MS's obsession with propriety, controlled environments like how we have to pay for memory cards while even Nintendo lets you use SD cards; like how the PS3 has a cheaply upgradable hard drive and we pay $100 for 20 gigs while a PS3 owner can get 160 gigs for that much; or how 3rd party controller manufacturers can't make integrated wireless controllers leaving us only with, you guessed, MS's controller that cost 50 dollars and doesn't even come with rechargeable batteries. These are not "fatal" flaws but they are certainly annoying, and costly.

Also apparently there are limitations to mod support on xbox LIVE, but I don't know to what degree that extends.

Why can't it be an optional function on console? Where in the rule books does it says console don't need a KB/M?

Oh goodie...yet another post about how great the PS3 will be...someday...and how much it will own the 360....someday...and how the 360's mistakes will be it's downfall....someday.

I guess it gives PS3 owners something to do while they wait for Sony to come out with some good games.

If PS3 gets a keyboard+mouse support then it will be must buy for people since games like CoD 4 online will have a huge difference between players with controllers against players who have a Kb/M.

GIJames248

There are a number of reasons why they want such a controlled environment on the 360, and they're not all about money. They're trying to prevent the use of their console to perform illegal activities, for one thing--the Xbox with its hard drive was notorious for being modded to do things no console should ever be able to do.

Another reason (this one pertaining more to software) is that MS wants to keep Xbox Live a safe, secure, and unhacked system so that people can easily enjoy multiplayer games without the fear of hackers and so that those who place a great deal of importance on achievements don't have to worry about people cheating their way to them.

It's like copy protection in music. You can't stop the hackers, you can only inconvenience your honest costumers. I do believe that a lot of it is about money, particularly the hard-drive and controller issues, because they give MS a monopoly (we all know how much MS loves those) and they are taking advantage of it by raising prices to absurd levels. I understand your point about xbox live, and as I said I wasn't sure to what extent it really affected dev's. I had only heard about Epic and UT3 having some problems.

With all that behind me I will say that on Black Friday I'm camping out to buy a 360, so obviously despite my views on its shortfallings I still believe it is a good console.

Because I prefer a level playing field in my online games...

If MS enabled KB/M support for all of its online games, I'd basically be forced to use them if I wanted to compete because we all know how much more accurate a Mouse is to an analog stick. I pity the folks who play UT3 with a SIXAXIS against KB/M users. They're going to get destroyed.

At the end of the day, I prefer a controller for everything except RTS and quite frankly, I'm glad the option to use a KB/M isn't there. If I really want to play with those, I'll just use my PC.

why not just buy a computer?Jandurin

Because buying a computer that's powerful enough to run these knds of kinds would cost 2 to 3 times as much as a 360 console.

Fatal is an exageration but like I said it'llend up giving the developers the choice between the long hard road that leads ultimatley to an inferior product or a shorter easier roadthat leads to an almost flawlessport with the game being played as it was designed to be played. It won't be long before alot of developers will end up favouring the system that supports them better.

As for the issue with online games and such. It'd be as simple as filtering players usingt m/k setups and controller setups and just having an option to lock out players using m/k setups if you don't want to play against them. It doesn't mean everygame will automatically start using m/k. But seriously it'd take a matter of days to just programsome firmware to allow the use of mouse and keyboard. If developers don't want to use it then just don't put m/k in the game.

to the people saying "i use keyboard / mouse on a computer why wouldi want it on a console". Ever think not all of us have high end pc's to play the latest games...some of us have jobs and dont have mommy and daddy to pay for all our gaming needs, so being able to play the latest shooters as they were meant to play on a ps3 / 360 really wouldn't be a bad thing.

I don't understand your post? You don't want the option because it unfair? First of all, the biggest myth is that KB/M will pwn control user. When UT3 comes out you will see that PS3 will have high ranking players just as much with PC.

Yes, it would make things unfair to those who prefer using controllers. Now, I'm not saying that a KB?M user will instantly win against a controller user, but if you put two peoplw of relatively equal skill on their respective platforms (PC and console) then the PC user would most likely win. A mouse is faster andmore accurate than an analog stick.

I don't think it's that big of a gap with kb/m and controller. Yeah kb/m may have theadvantage, but it's a slight one. Like a 6'5 QB to a 6'0 QB.

you're right...this is a CONSOLE war...

if you want a k/b and mouse for gaming go with pc...

the inclusion of k/b and mouse for the ps3 will not make it a "super computer" no matter what sony says...

sony just doesn't know which way to go with the ps3... is it a console or a wannabe pc?

only stringer knows for sure...

That's why we have things called server settings and filters for server browsers. Epic is allowing you to limit what kind of games you see and play in UT3 so that it is your choice if you want to take on a bunch KB/M players with a SixAxis or you can go join a server limited to people playing with controllers.

The problem with that thinking is that even if the ps3 or the 360 get KB/M support for games, developers would still need to adjust the control settings. Not everyone that will buy the game will play it with the KB/M. And no developer would require KB/M for a console game. Not as many people would buy it.

You basically end up with a PC that doesn't have nearly the same functionality of a PC. Their support of the kb/m combo is yet another sign that Sony is trying to take down the beast that is PC gaming and will only end up in failure. A console should be doing everything it can to differentiate itself from the PC gaming world. Not emulate it.

This, my friend, is a fatal step for the Sony.

Microsoft doesn't want to add full kb/m interfacing because it will only bring about cannabilization of their product. This is a bad thing for a business.
