Sorry if old

Found this in Kotaku.

Earlier this week, Valve released the latest set of data from their regular hardware survey, revealing just what kind of hardware the average PC gamer is packing these days.

Here are the major findings: you prefer Intel systems to AMD, you prefer NVIDIA graphics cards to ATI, and the majority of you now have at least a dual-core system.

While it's always fun/heart-breaking comparing your own rig to that of the masses, I found one thing amusing; 97.98% of polled users had a DVD drive, something I do not. I'd always felt comfortable with this, games and other media being so easily available digitally these days, but now, I feel a little...alone

Source: Steam Hardware Survey: December 2009 [Valve]

So how much for this average gamer's rig costs??

Its good that 45% of systems are DX10, its moved up alot recently.

It's also good to know that theres more Windows 7 64bit than 32bit, its about time 64bit became the norm so the 4gb ram limitation is no longer an issue. I just wish companies like Dell would ONLY sell 64bit versions making sure it does become the norm. Maybe then we will have more native 64bit games.

AMD has really been offering some great bang for the buck lately, so I hope their share of the pie rises steadily, competition is good and they deserve it. As for the cost of the average PC(or is that median?)..maybe around 500 bucks.

It died with Vista since it no longer supports hardware acceleration on the sound card.

Yet the most popular card is 8800gt that can play crysis at 1440x900 at very high settings Let alone in the top 10 are vga's like the Gtx260, 4870,9600gt and 4850

Thats not true at all.

It no longer supports Directsound which is what many games used for hardware accelerated sound, however if you use OpenAL then you can still use the hardware acceleration and most games these days do use OpenAL. It's really only an issue for older games.

It died before Vista because motherboards have come with good inbuilt 7.1 for a very long time now, this is what led to it dying, even then companies are still making them, so people must be still buying them.

Yeah its only for games with directSound and directSound3D, so must of the older games cant take advantage of the hight quality audio. Unless your using creative alchemy on Vista. I personally cant tell the difference between onboard on an X-fi. The only thing I like about the X-Fi sound card the is the EAX options on older games.

So you haven't played Counter Strike or TF2? What the hell DO you play? Even Modern Warfare 2 is 100% Steam authenticated. There's virtually no way to be the average PC gamer and manage to bypass the use of Steam.

Yeah because everyone who uses Steam is a massive PC gamer right? You realise that all Source games can run on really low spec machines, my computer from 2001 can run HL2 well on medium settings...

Well its still funny how these average PCs still output much better graphics than any of the consoles. Not forgetting the fact Crysis can be run at all very high setings @ 1280x1000 @30fps on an average dual core CPU, 2gb RAM and an old lowly 8800GT which is coming up to 3 years old.

So 28Fps on very high at 1024x768 and 51fps on high is unplayable? Then 9 out of console games must be unplayable and that review btw it was right when the 8800gt was released and since then the drivers matured and expect a nice 5-10% more performance over those BTW Like i said with mostly very high and some high settings Crysis is more than playable on an 8800gt at 1280x1024 let alone at 720p

Yes, it's pretty sad and one of the reasons why I'm sticking to XP as long as I can. I guess no-one appreciates good sound quality anymore.

The quality of the sound is more directly related to 1) the quality of the speakers 2) the acoustics from the room 3) the player ears 4) the processing chip. Since current in-board chips are very good the quality of surround sound is no longer a proble,m

I'm using a X-Fi Fatal1ty in my XP desktop and a integrated chip in my W7 HTPC, and IMO the speakers are more important. And IMO my Logiech Z-5500 desktop beats my LG-TH953 TV home cinema.

FAIL

The benchmarks you posted is from 2007 and it shows the 8800GT was getting 28fps @1280x768 @ very high settings.

This also does not change the FACT Nvidia has released many GPU drivers since 2007 which have vastly increased the performace of Nvidia GPUs in Crysis.

What a joke. I used to have a pair of 8800 GTs, and even combined, the best they could do was ~30 fps on High. Very High? Forget it. Even my current setup struggles to do Very High at a stable framerate.

I think the better question is this.

DX10? Resolution you played at? AA on or off.

^^ those right there are what kills performance in crysis.

Bull****. I had one 640 MB model 8800 GTS and I could run it at high unmodded at about 40-45 fps except in the Reckoning level. I managed to reach a high/very high combo messing with the engine settings and again, except in the Reckoning level, I ran it at about 40-45 fps.

When people say running on "Very High" it can sometimes be misleading, simply because performance is hugely impacted by resolution and AA settings as well. If you want to run games like Crysis or Farcry2 on very high with full AA at 1680x1050, then you need a pretty expensive rig.

Mine with a 2.5 Ghz Quadcore, Crossfired 4850s, 8 gigs of ram averages about 29 FPS running Farcry2 on the settings mentioned above, sometimes dipping to as low as 14. If I lower the resolution to 720p instead, I average about 50 FPS with the same settings. So the resolution you choose to run at can have a large impact on performance.

Yeah but I know which settings he used...his performance dropped because of DX10 (he's too lazy to tweak the settings).

Maybe if you were staring at a tree, no way you would get 45 fps when the action got intense.

medium? you're joking right? A 8800 GT can run Crysis fine at high and only gets in trouble when you start using Directx10 stuff.

It's interesting that most gamers apparently don't have very high spec computers.... but i thought you guys all ran Crysis on MAX???!thetruespin
Well... considering that the average speced machine on this list can run most games maxed and is 3-4 year old tech. My machine fits right in there: intel Core2 duo 2.67 ghz Nvidia 9800gt 512mb (replaced my 8800gts 640mb after the fan stopped working and it went up to over 100c! it artefacted the card :( ) 2gb Corsair XMS2 ddr2 ram 4 hard drives == 600gb space (2 ide 2 sata) DVD-rom (pioneer circa 2001) DVD -RW (LG circa 2005) Asus P5LD2 Mobo Realtek HD audio Network Speed: 7gb/s download 512kbps upload Monitor: Gateway 2400hd Glossy 1920x1200 display Dual Boot Windows XP and Ubuntu Jaunty Linux (this one most here probably don't even know about) Keybard: Saitek: Eclispe 2 (lights up in 3 colors for the keys and base...awesome keyboard!!!+ Mouse: Logitech mx518 5 button optical gaming mouse Gamepad: Sietek/ p2500 rumble pad , and crappy gamstop x360 controller(actually better than MS branded controller) So most of my stuff is 3-4 years old, with some hard drives dating back to 2004... yet i can still play crisis at high settings on Direct x 9, at 1920x1200 (no AA) and its not a problem. I tried vista and DX 10 but all my games would crash after an hour of play.. I blame that on vistas bad bad bad memory management, it does the same thing to my work pc which has vista, it sucks with memory. XP and 2000 before that are the best MS operating systems period! Right now I am playing Divinity 2 and Risen on my PC both maxed out!!! This chart shows that most pc gamers can play most games maxed. You don't need SLI or super high end cards as there are no games besides crisis and total war that will take advantage of them. If you have a dual core a 8800gt card or higher, 2g or more of ram you are set! a 8800gt can be found today for $60.

What's your current setup ?

Perhaps you should have gone with ATI? I'm pulling 40fps very high with my 5850, i7, 6 gigs.

AMD has really been offering some great bang for the buck lately, so I hope their share of the pie rises steadily, competition is good and they deserve it. As for the cost of the average PC(or is that median?)..maybe around 500 bucks.ManicAce
I can't stand ATI... I used to be a AMD guy...Pentium 1,2 and 3 were the best Processors back in the day, but Intel peaked with the Pentium 3 coppermine imo... the pentium 4 was CRAPOLA! That is when I became an AMD guy the AMD XP and AMD64 Athlons were the greatest!!! Until Intel put out the CORE2duo line that just blasted them away and they were cheap. I was amazed that I could afford a 2.6ghz Core2duo when they launched for $200, most intel chips were $900+ at launch, but not the core2duo which went back to its P3 roots and built on that.... So I stopped buying AMD Once AMD merged with ATI ..ugh... I can't stand ati graphics cards. I have tried them 4 times... every time has been a nightmare all the way back to the crapy rage3d card that couldn't even run opengl games at all! I remember trying to play Descent 3 and it chugged. I switched to Voodoo and later Nvidia and never once had issues. Tried an origianl radeon --incompatiblites, tried a raedeon 9500 --good for half -life 2 and source games but again the drivers sucked for open gl... kotor wouldn't even lauch. There was a few other ATi card I bought and the wrong card was in the box... the store wouldn't let me return it. :( ATi's biggest problem though was always drivers...they sucked compared to nvidia. Nvidia has treated me fine over the years, not once did i have a problem with their cards except with my 8800gts which lasted 4 years.. it died 2 weeks ago, the fan base got stuck in place by dust build up..and the gpu fried at 100c+ .(not nvidias fault) I'll take a proven track record and great cards from nvidia over an ati card anyday! For right now I will take Intel over AMD (that could change at some point)

Weird I've had great experiences with both ATI and Nvidia. Though my fav card ever (so far) is the 8800GT :PBut I didjust upgraded my GPU to a 5870. I guess I'll have to go back to Nvidia next upgrade :)

That's what I hear. My brother-in-law asked me to build him a system; he's very happy with the Phenom II/Radeon 5850 I set up for him.

It died with Vista since it no longer supports hardware acceleration on the sound card.

GTSaiyanjin2
Which is just messed up!!! I had to retire my sound blaster live card (that card kicked arse for years, it didn't work for vista at all... too old of a card but i loved it) I went back to xp and killed vista in favor of ubuntu.. I don't need no dx10 unles

i dont using steam i hate valve

Brownesque
So you haven't played Counter Strike or TF2? What the hell DO you play? Even Modern Warfare 2 is 100% Steam authenticated. There's virtually no way to be the average PC gamer and manage to bypass the use of Steam.

Steam really is the only thing good valve has done latley.. TF2 was great and so was Half-life 2 but other then that their games have been not so good. Where is half-life 3 and whats up with them still using a 6 year old game engine. Where's source version 2? lazy i tell you. And I can't stand counterstrike and the online community in that game. It is very repetitive and very boring. No re spawns ... I hate that crap in fps games..rather play old school quake3, ut 99 /2004 / battlefield 2 online than counterstrike.
