Brian Fargo and inXile are working on The Bard's Tale 4, and they now showed an in-engine video of their new game.

It's using Unreal Engine 4 and it looks pretty damn good.

  • A single-player, party-based dungeon crawl, rich in exploration and combat
  • Dungeons filled not just with dangerous fights but with challenging puzzles and devious riddles
  • Dynamic phase-based combat, where the pace of battle is animated and fluid, but still gives you time to think and respond to your enemies
  • A game set to beautiful Gaelic music, where the Bard’s songs and melodies affect gameplay
  • Co-funded by fans and inXile: if this game hits its $1.25 million goal, inXile will put in at least $1.25 million of its own money to double the initial budget!
  • Built using Unreal Engine 4, for PC, Mac and Linux. Available from Steam or DRM-Free from GOG.com
  • Available in English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Polish
  • Built for and with the help of our fans. Your feedback and input directly impact the design and features of the game during alpha and beta stages

Here's their Kickstarter.

Thoughts?

Looks great but still no idea why are still funding it via Kickstarter. At this point I expected them to have enough money to make the game themselves and find a publisher easily. Larian guys are doing the exact same thing. This time they are fully developing the new game on their own with a little help from Focus Home Interactive.

Still looking forward to Bard's Tale 4 though. Hopefully actual game will look at least this good too. Brain Fargo said, this will have higher production values than previous games and will use latest tech available. Will have to wait and see. It's definitely not coming out till 2017.

Will care more when it has actual gameplay footage. But inXile is cool, Wasteland 2 is neato in spite of the really slow burn.

UE4 will make the consoles have a seizure trying to run it.

I have the newer BT but never played it, but I LOVED the old ones as a kid. Next time someone says a souls game is hard they should try playing the teleporter dungeon which had no light or map function in the original BT and no save points except for 1 back at "camp".

Unreal Engine 4 is easily the most impressive graphics engine I've ever seen. I can bet Chris Roberts must be thinking that he should've went with UE4 instead but then again they are not even using the same engine anymore at this point. It's completely different beast with more capabilities than Vanilla CryEngine. UE4 is much more powerful tool than vanilla CryEngine IMO.

Plus Unreal is much better optimized...

Compare OLD TERA (UE3) to Archeage (CE3)....

On a R7 260 TERA delivers double the frames with double graphics.

Yup... That's why I can't wait for final build of Unreal Tournament. It's already looking better than anything I've ever seen and it has ways to go. Even in its current state it's running great even on 4k res. Not to mention, it's Arena shooter which means environments will be smaller than other games and it'll allow them to push graphics even further.

They are building it as benchmark game for Unreal Engine 4. One of the modder is already working on a level based on Elemental Tech Demo for Unreal Tournament and it looks like a very interesting map. Going to look awesome when it's finished.

Because publishers suck.

They do have enough money. They said they'll just add 1.5 mil of their own money on top of the kickstarter fund.

But Larian found publisher. And they obviously have more money than 1.25 million after Wasteland 2 release, they just don't want to take risks I think. Anyways,,, as long as the game is good, who cares.

@Blabadon: I enjoyed LoG, but it's more of a puzzle game with combat than an RPG with puzzles. There aren't many other dungeon crawlers like it nowadays.

As for The Bard's Tale...I've backed it on Kickstarter, but I've never played the previous games. Maybe I'll aim to do that before the KS campaign ends.

Also, the video is clearly just a tech demo, but I like the art style and Celtic music.

Lets see how watered down this engine becomes to accommodate the consoles. LMAO.

Can't wait for Dev's to start using Next Gen engines, everything this gen so far is very last gen looking even the Witcher 3

I think Gears of War 4 will be that game that uses Unreal Enging 4 and show us what Next gen is all about, like Gears did on X360

Didn't Chris Roberts say he tried out both CryEngine and UE4 when making the prototype. I guess the earlier versions changed a lot since after all CryEngine(4) was still technically CryEngine 3 when he started development of Star Citizen.

Unreal Engine 4 was unstable back then. It was still in development so he decided to go with Cry Engine. The type of game that they are making is not possible on Cry Engine. They rewrote a lot of stuff. It's not even the same thing anymore. Internally it is being called "Star Engine" now. Warhorse did the exact same thing for Kingdom Come Deliverance. Cry Engine is not suitable for open world games.

No. Grimrock has real time combat, while BT4 will be phase based like Wizardry was. (thankfully)

And....pledged.

Don't really understand the value of putting a ui and add jerky camera movements over this and calling it gameplay. This is in-engine. This is what the game will look like. and that's all you need to know from an early trailer.

Well I want to see game in action, because that what really matters to me.
