This topic is locked from further discussion.
In all honesty Casey, this seems a bit unfair since PC games can go so much furhter back as far as games for that system but consoles can not.
Maybe a better comparison would be to compare all the games produced for all consoles ever made but dont ask me to come up with all those games and list the ratings - lol ;)
I suppose that depends on your definition of games. Is the PC better for FPS and RTS games? Sure. Are there more sim games, and more western-style RPGS (and MMOs)? Definitely. But if you're looking for JRPGs, platformers, sports games, or probably action adventure games in general, consoles win the battle. So it basically comes down to what types of games you're into.
For example, I've played games on the PC before (Quake III, Diablo, Baldur's Gate, etc.), but I'm not a PC gamer, and I've got the majority of the consoles out there. Why? Because the games that come out for the consoles appeal to me more (my favorite games of all time include Goldeneye, FFVI, Zelda: LttP and Shenmue, among others). For me, the PC doesn't hold a candle to console gaming. Technically superior? On a solid gaming computer, yes. Is there a huge (theoretical) advantage in titles available for the PC compared to any one console? Of course. But for the types of games I like, the PC just doesn't cut it. I can completely see where PC gamers are coming from, but that's just not my taste.

Do it by genres and which system has the mostin each, and I think you'll find the Consoles come out top of all except a few.
In terms of looking at ratings, yes. In terms of personal preference, I would take consoles over PC.
However, PC gaming should be compared to all game systems ever, since PCs are not a uniform system, and they don't have "generations" per se, and when its all of consoles vs PC gaming, the playing field evens up quite a bit.

Like Shooters (FPS and TPS), WRPGs, Strategies (Real Time and Turn Based), MMORPGs, Adventure, Action Adventure and Simulators.
It's all a matter of opinion. Honestly I can't think of one PC game that is coming out that I want to play IMO.
that's not on consoles.
COD4, etc.
Yeah right when you consider the Top Ten game list for PC for today.
Only one game is not on consoles as well. :P

I don't see any platform as being Number 1. They are all equal.
The only 2 I care about are Bio-shock and COD4 and there also on consoles.

What I am merly stating is none of the PLatforms are End all be all.
All of them deserve a place in Gaming.

In his defense, he's using tangible and correct evidence to back up his argument, a refreshing change from most threads.
I have vista now and it doesn't play a lot of previous games that I owned on previous versions of windows. That was an unpleasant surprise. Although, I think if you include illegal downloads the pc is easily the greatest console. That's what built the ps1.GunSmith1_basicIf using Illegal then put the modded Xbox right there too lol ;)
True, consoles can't touch the amount of (quality) games that PC's have, and that's because it existed for over 20 years.
However, in proportion, the amount of AAA's are higher for consoles. If you take out a range of 5 years out of the PC's lifetime and compare to a console that lasted 5 years, the console will come up on top. At least, I think so. :?

Actually, comparing a console the PC from a similar time period, (say the PS2 and PC from Q3 2001) yields the same trend.

These aren't exclusives, because then the results slant further in the PC's favour.
maybe, but how much do you have to spend on a rig to play crysis?shoeman12
It's suppose to work on 2-3 year old rigs according to Crytek. Also, Crysis is not very representative of what the majority of PC games require.
or can you name one system with as many AAA/AA games as the pc has?
CaseyWegner
That is where your arguement falls short.
Consoles as in pural. Considering there was so many consoles during the last 30 years.
The combined total of all consoles vs PC AA/AAA is alot closer then one might think.

Stating you need all consoles in union to match the PC is not exactly an endearing point to your argument.

TC did not state a specfic console, he stated Consoles.
Over the Past 20-25 years consoles did more for gaming then PC ever did.
At least that is my Sentiment on the Subject matter.

Considering that you can't use the same computer you used 20 years ago to play today's games, there are multiple PC "consoles", as well. It's just that the newest PC consoles have amazing backwards compatibility. ;)

Yes, but it's obvious from the context of what he said he meant the comparison of one system against the PC, hence the phrase "one system", within. Nitpicking the semantics of his title is no good.
And no, I would disagree with your opinion that consoles did more over the past 25-20 years than the PC ever did.
The PC market never crashed and fell to immense consumerist pressures like consoles did.
The PC pioneered 3D gaming.
The PC pioneered online gaming.
The PC pioneered mods and user created content.
The PC either invented or was critical in the development (usually both) of the genres of FPS, RPGs, Simulators, Sports games, Adventure and strategy. (off the top of my head).
The PC continues to pioneer, both graphically and in gameplay innovation and change in a way consoles emulate.
The best that can be said of what consoles have done is provided controllers, helped develop the racer genre, and created specific exceptional titles over the years.
For that matter, how many older titles, outside of classics like Mario and Monkey Island, would really be fun for someone who hasn't ever played them to back and play? When we take nostalgia out of the question, a lot of previously great titles like X-Wing, Civlization, and Tribes would be torture for a young gamer to go back and play.
Syndicate Wars was a great game, that doesn't mean I'd make someone go back and play it - and without the community (and then impressive) visuals, would we really say Quake 2, UT 03, and CS beat a modern PC or console FPS?
On the console side, a lot of old AAA games are considered AAA because of being technically impressive, or revolutionizing their genres, but in modern comparison they wouldn't stand out. I don't care if GTA III was a AAA because it revolutionized sandbox gaming, I've played so many sandbox games since then that I would rather play an A or AA modern game on PC than go back and play GTA III. And I'd rather go play *any* modern console game, even Mario Party 8 (*shudder*) than sit through Syndicate Wars again.
The only games that hold up are games that were excellent in their golden era. Mario and Sonic games were the height of 16-bit platformers, Lucas Arts titles were the height of adventure titles, et cetera.
In any case, since the Xbox the difference between consoles and PCs has greatly narrowed, right down to the games they share. My preference of platform comes down to which one makes the particular game I want to play work best. Too Human? 360 please. Oblivion? PC please. Mario? in my pocket on my DS, thanks!

Thanks - I LOL'ed for real. I think it would be a worthwhile endeavor for someone ( not me lol ) to research lets say PS2 titles to PC titles in the same year then with this little caveat " All the PS2 games worked as advertised right out of the box and performed exactly as reviewed " ! I bet you cant say that about PC games since the PC being used effected how the game worked. ;)[QUOTE="CaseyWegner"]casey, use your mod powers to figure out we should only compare how many AAA titles the pc has PER GENERATION,or can you name one system with as many AAA/AA games as the pc has?

When comparing just two systems is exclusivity relevant or is total number more important?
Not sure the fact that the PS2 shared a lot of titles with the Xbox effects the strength of its line up (though I assume the PC also shared a lot of exclusives with the Xbox)

I guess this way u have to count in all the console games ever made... it will be a landslide for the consoles.
you'd have to...and that defeats the purpose. :?
seriously, why should it matter? you can ignore older games and compare current libraries but those older games still exist. CaseyWegner
But they aren't as good as they once were (mostly). Plus surely it is more relevant what the recent history of a system is.

That was the entire point of my post in this thread. You can't expect someone's who's never played Syndicate Wars, X-Wing, and Myst to go back and think "gee, these are awesome AAA titles". They aren't, by today's standards, Deus Ex is not nearly as impressive as it as by the standards of when it came out. Some games, such as Starcraft, hold up remarkably well, but if you go far enough back, especially in graphics-driven genres, it's hard to say that those games are "excellent". I didn't consider THPS3 a 10 at the time it was released, so I wouldn't expect someone to play it five years from now and say "this is an amazing game".
