The Best Game You Never Played

what’s the one game you’d love to have played but for whatever reason didn’t?

maybe it was before your time, on a system you didn’t own (ssssshhhhh… whisper it quietly) or it just went well below your radar.

for me it’s fallout 2.

i had a bit of a gaming lull in the late 90s when i was a teen and gaming took a backseat to drinking and girls. i feel like i missed out on a true landmark experience and perhaps if i did play it back then id better understand the rationale of angry fans who en masse turned their nose up at bethesda’s first attempt at a fallout game (3), which i enjoyed.

for many games i think to truly appreciate their quality you needed to play them at the time and that ship has obviously well and truly sailed for me and fallout 2.

so what’s the one game that got away from you?

The Max Payne games, I hear so much good stuff about them and how influential they were.

Also, back in the day I really wanted to play Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, it was released on the TurboGrafx 16 but only in Japan I believe and was at the time mega-expensive to acquire in North America. It is the prequel to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, one of my favorite games

There’s quite a few actually but I guess a most recent one that springs to mind would be Persona 5 because I don’t have a PS4 yet. I could get the PS3 version but I’d rather just wait and get it on the PS4 instead.

@uninspiredcup: yeah I also really wanted to play Demon Souls last gen, but then I got to play Dark Souls and felt I got a very good comparable experience, so that helped forget about the game afterwards.

Oh yeah. Street Fighter V also. I really want to play that game as well.

I play everything regardless of the system. I have played all the highly praised old games. My pick would end up being something newer I have not purchased yet. Something within the past year or 2.

Wolfenstein 2, Sonic Mania and South Park The Fractured But Whole from a quick google search seem like a good answer.

Probably the metal gear solid games.

I only played Metal Gear Acid 1&2 and Metal Gear Peace Walker on PSP.

This hurts my heart. I probably won't get much support, but I think Demon's Souls is better than Dark Souls. Don't get me wrong, Dark Souls is good, but beside being the original, Demon's Souls just has a creepier and grittier feel. It's special...at least to me.

Yakuza series. The big story between all the games kinda holds me back from getting to it until I'm ready. I know they have vids from past games for catch up but feel like I'd miss a lot that way. I am thinking I will check out 0 sometime this year.

Maybe Witcher 3.

Put it down after 2 hours, combat was too boring.

I still have it. Maybe when there is a drought, I will get back to it. I doubt that though with the Ps4 games coming.

Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Forza, Rachet and Clank, Uncharted, Zelda, Super Mario and many more series. It's embarrassing.

Spent most of my time predominantly on JRPGs and a few other franchises growing up.

@Alucard_Prime: buy a wii as you can get it from the online store (if it's still live) and you can plug in a snes mini controller to the wii controller and play it.

You can also get it through wii mode on the wiiu.

A few come to mind, but most of them I have the platform to play it on, just haven't bought the game yet- Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Metroid Samus Returns, Pikmin 2.

There's a few PS4 games I look forward to playing when I finally get that system- Bloodborne, The Last of Us 2, Uncharted 4

The one that comes to mind that I don't have the means to play it is Silent Hill 2. I was about to say Castlevania Symphony of the Night but I just found out that game is on Xbox One...

KOTOR, I just can never get into it. I hate the hybrid turn-based real time combat. I prefer if a game just committed to either one or the other.

Vampire the Masquerade. I don't know how I never got around to it - but it's in my GoG library now and next on my list

Far cry 3, I'll do it now with FC5's season pass

Probably Half Life 1 and 2. Bit before my time though I have watched a let's play of it to see the story.

Bloodborne. Just never got around to picking it up. And also don’t want to go through the first few headache inducing hours as my brain adjusts to sub 30 fps after playing the hell out of DS3 at 60 fps.

WoW. Never played it but I remember everyone else playing it. I knew it was a massive game when even my old boss (who doesn't game at all) would be in his office playing it all day. I often question myself why I didn't play it since I really like mmo's. If I could rewind time ,I'd go back and play it.

Xenoblade Chronicles.

-been wanting to play it since I got Wii ages ago, but never quite got meself paying the asking price. The game is one of the priciest of Wii games...

I wasn't good at looking up games when I was a kid, so I missed out on Blood. Loved DOOM so I would definitely have enjoyed it. Bloodborne would've been nice, but to hell with PlayStation with it's unstable 30 fps and unremovable chromatic abberration. I'd looooove to play Metroid: Samus Returns, but my 3DS is retired. Unless it comes for Switch, I'll pass. I should probably play Dragon's Dogma. Looks cool, and I'd probably like it but I just haven't got around to it.

I thought the same dude. Took me 4-5 attempts over the last 2 years to get in to it, but once you finally do it is actually very, very good. I also thought the combat was boring and rubbish, but after playing more and more it is quite refined and works very well. I was stupid a couple years ago and kept trying to play on Death March. Knock it down a few and just enjoy the game without the stress of dying and that's when it became much more enjoyable for me.

And on topic, I'd have to say Bloodborne (although it's waiting on my PS4 now due to it being a PS+ game, however PUBG is too inviting still) and the Far Cry series. I also have Just Cause 3 that I bought last Christmas that I've not even booted. And I only played FFXii and FXiii so definitely missing out on those. Man there's loads of games! Oh to not need to go to work and have a pregnant girlfriend....the time I'd have....><

@Macutchi: Fallout 2 is definitely on my list along with most of Black Isle's catalog. They have so many highly praised games I wanted to try, but I have to be selective with RPGs. Just don't have time to play all the games I want to. Narrowed it down to Fallout 2 or Planescape: Torment, and went with Planescape. A decision I do not regret, but would still like to get around to Fallout someday.

Others include much of the Shin Megami Tensai series, Final Fantasy 9, Chrono Trigger, Half Life 2, Portal, all the handheld Metroids and Zeldas...

Shining Force 3. Never got a Saturn so I missed out on the sequel to one of my all time favourite gamea.

Persona 5. It has been sitting on my coffee table unopened since August. Not even sure it will ever get played.

As a massive Shining Force fan I can safely say you didn't miss much as only the first (of three) episodes were translated to English and I was left with an empty feeling after playing the first episode :(

I have heard some fans translated episodes 2 and 3 which you can play it either on an emulator or hacked saturn.

Some old console games probably. Back then I was a hardcore PC only gamer and wouldn't have touched a console with a stick. Now I kind of regret that I never played Shenmue or Syphon Filter, etc.

Final Fantasy IX. I've played all the other Final Fantasies and have heard really good things about IX, I just haven't ever gotten around to playing it.

@mojito1988: What are you waiting for? Play it! Persona 5 is one of the most stylish and substantial JRPG experiences ever. It does demand a lot of investment from the player, however, and it's quite the emotionally heavy game, so I would recommend setting aside... I don't know... like... 5 or so weekends to play it?
