This is unusual for me, but I had no idea what I was in for when I bought Resident Evil 4. I was blown away.

And TC, are you just naming every game you like? I find it hard to believe you had no idea what to expect with all of that list.

Astro Boy: Omega Factor. I knew it was going to be good, but I wasn't expecting it to be the best GBA ever made, as it turned out to be,.

worms armageddon ps1( greatest party game ever)

street fighter 3rd strike ( i have never lost and i play it atleast twice a week at a busy arcade)

Gran turismo 3 (greatest racing game imo just the jump from all racing game like GT2 and daytona to this masterpiece)

Super mario bros 3 ( knew it would be awesome as i got it at luanch but did it surpass my expectations. i still rock it to this day on my og nes, which i still think is the best. For sure it's better then the rest. it had metriod with samus. man that game was harder then my NALPEX test.

Guitar Hero - thought it would be too corny and silly, but it was a lot of fun

Shadow of the Colossus - didn't think a game consisting of only boss fights could be any good, but it was very well designed

Metal Gear Acid 2 - didn't believe combining metal gear with card-game gameplay would be any fun, but as it turns out I liked it even more than Portable Ops

Chronicles of Riddick - a liscenced game based on a bad movie...I thought it would be a mindless 5 hour button-masher type game

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (gameboy color version) - didn't think it would translate well given the lack of power in a gameboy color, yet it was a great game

Age of Empires: Age of Kings (ds version) - same as above

ooh Riddick is a good one.....another poster earlier put Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I totally agree. The game was amazing! Along with Castlevania: Cirlce of the Moon.

I officially add those to my earlier list lol.

Metal Gear Acid- I'm in no way a fan of the MGS series, but for some reason MGA's gameplay got to me despite its downright convoluted story.

PGR series- I'm more of a simulation racer, but the PGR series has a great balance of realism and arcade driving.

RE4- Again, I was never a fan of the RE series from the limited amount of playing I had with the previous titles, but RE4 blew me away.

KOTOR- Its a Star Wars game, even if Bioware was the developer gaming law states Star Wars games generally suck hard.

C&C3 (360 version)- I was very skeptical that a RTS could work on a console with a controller, I was wrong.

Halo- I'm an old school PC gamer, so common knowledge (or at least common SW knowledge) says I should hate Halo with a passion.

Halo, X-Com, system shock 2, Riddick, Viva Piñata, Crackdown, Rallisport Challenge, Katamari Damacy, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Pacman CE, Ultima Underworld, Monkey Island, and quite a bit of others I don't remember right now.

It's important to note, these are not necessarily my favorite games, just excellent games that came out of the blue for me...

I thought Kingdom Hearts was going to be an overwhelmingly kiddy game considering the disney characters in there. The I learnt of the Final Fantasy elements in there and I dared to give it a try. To this day Kingdom Hearts is one of my fave franchises. Guitar Hero also caught me by suprise. I never really thought it would be any good. I thought it was stupid until I was forced to give it a try. Even though I sucked at it the first time, something made me want to play it more.

Resistance certainly surprised me. I thought it was just another Halo clone. When in actual fact it's just another Half-Life 2 clone, and an awesome one too.

Back when I was young, I got Baldur's Gate II for $25 (AU) and didn't know anything about it... best value ever. I would pay ten times that amount for BG2.

And, uh,... Ice Age on GBA. I love that game, and I clocked it.

Final Fantasy VIII.

I was 10.

I didn't know what to expect.

I got a masterpiece.

And I would do anything to go back and do it all over again.

  • Metroid Prime - At the time that pre-ordered it, I think the only Metroid game that I actually owned was 2 (although I had played a bit of Super Metroid, years earlier).
  • Call of Juarez - Sort of an impulse buy, here. Was suprisingly great, and tragically underrated (but I can agree with many of the docked marks).
  • Ghost Master - I hadn't heard of the game, but the concept sounded interesting, and it turned out to be a brilliant game. More people should play this!
  • Killer7 - I knew it would be a 'mature shooter', but I had no idea that it would kick so much arse!
  • Guild Wars - Honestly, I only bought t because it was half-price, and had no monthly fees. Two years later, I'm still playing it regularly.
  • Silent Storm - It was $5, how could I go wrong? I now think of it as one of the best squad-based strategy games ever.
