I would say oblivion 4and fallout 3 not fallout new vagas caus its too buggy too short and you cant continue after you complete the game wiche sucks

Paper mario and paper mario the thousand year door own all.

Oblivion is my favourite with Mass Effect series very close.

Planescape Torment & FF7, FF9

My favorite has always been Xenogears. Still haven't finished it though.

Also FF6,FF7, FF9, BoF3, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross,and FF Tactics are up there too. I haven't seen anything yet this generation that comes close.

Pokemon. Something that's very simple, but yet can be very deep as well.

Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Planescape: torment are the best 3 rpgs and they were released years ago.

Fallout: New Vegas is much more of an rpg than Fallout 3 ever was.

The best as really the best overall? Probably one of these: Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment, Fallout 2.

The best as in the one I like the most? Probably one of these:Oblivion, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VIII.

You must be very young indeed to forget BG2, PS:T, Chrono Trigger, KOTOR, or Paper Mario 1.

If you had said Morrowind then l would have agreed with you.

Final Fantasy IX is my favorite.

My favorite WRPG is Planescape: Torment while my favorite JRPG is Pokemon Silver.

I would also like to mention Ultima 7: The Black Gate, it may be very old but yet it outdoes pretty much every sandbox released today, you can interact with almost anything.

Fallout 1, followed closely by Arcanum.

Final Fantasy 7 and 8

Baldurs Gate II

Gothic 2 for me, it does everything right (from great to the best) as opposed to Planescape which falls flat on everything but story.

I think you all know where I'm going with this. Mass Effect 2.

And just to pre-emptively counter attack the misguided claims, "It's not even an RPG"

* You DO level up your character and allocate stats points
* You DO choose different character cIasses for varied styIes of gameplay
* You DO start out with a small character and increase his/her power - upgraded weapon damage output and armor resiliance
* You DO customize your character's appearance, both facial features and armor configurations with color schemes
* You DO approach the story in your own way and get personally involved with the major and minor events
* You DO interact with the world around you, from player driven choices how to handle NPC encounters as well as party interactions

That last bullet point being the essense of actual role playing btw :)

Baldur's Gate 2, Daggerfall, Ultima VII parts 1 and 2, the Witcher are my favourites.
