Nier is a really great RPG despite its flaws, and Valkyria Chronicles is the best RPG that i've played this entire generation.
there hasn't been a RPG that i fell absolutely in love with for a while (console wise). which saddens me since its one of my fav genres. vincent380
Play Skyrim, guaranteed to change your perspective.
Skyrim though my hype was high, is AMAZING! so far I'm loving it far more than Morrowwind and definately better than Oblivion.
The only bad thing I have to say about the game is the lack luster textures on the weapons/shields.
Dark Souls is a good game... but Skyrim is KING!
Playing on i7 950, 6 gigs of RAM, GTX 460.... using 360 controller.
It was releasd in the middle of the night for me so I've had very little time with either game.
I went for Skyrims own advice and set the game at "high" along with this:
and I'm rather impressed with hpw well that runs on my (admittedly nice) laptop. I'm going to reduce the AA and bump some AF next time around and hopefully receive an even better experience.
Considering I've owned my 360 for about 2 days and I got Lost Odysssey, Gears 3 and Dark Souls for that as well, I have'nt had time for anything but a couple of deaths by way of skeleton so I'm not qualified to comment much on that either, besides the fact that it reminds me a lot of Demon's Souls which I was very much in love with.
Both games deserve at least 10 hours of game-time before I feel ready to comment on their comparative qualitities.
Skyrim has been the only game to meet my hype this year ... well MW3 too, but my hype for that wasn't too high.
Pokemon Gen 5. Improved game formula and that "new" factor regarding the mon lineup.
Radiant Historia. Great tale and a great throwback to the Golden Days of JRPGs.
Dragon Quest IX. Easy to learn, addictive as hell, and an overall amazing solo or multiplayer RPG.
Etrian Odyssey series. Another throwback to the PC RPG glory days. Not for everyone.
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. Best strategy RPG out there. Bar none.
I'll say Dark Souls and Skyrim. Its just crystal clear. They have both impressed me very much at what they set out t do.
I'd have said The Witcher 2 too since it stands out pretty beastly on its own....but I havent played it yet. :P
So far, RPG pimps goes to Skyrim and Dark Souls.
Xenoblade and Dark Souls nothing else comes closereaver-x
As good as Xenoblade was, I really don't think it's one of the top RPGs of the gen...or I'm still in two minds about it, anyway.
I mean, the gameplay was solid, the cutscenes were epic, and it's probably the most complete JRPG I've played since the SNES days...but it felt a bit soulless at times? I certainly didn't think much of the plot, especially in the second half of the game, the villains were crap, and the game just dragged on and on...
Eh, I don't know what I think about it.
[QUOTE="Whiteblade999"]You Like BG2 but hate ME2?Baldur's Gate 2 if you mean all time. The Witcher 2 if you mean recent.
dreman999
Makes sense to me - BG2 is Bioware's deepest and best-designed RPG (by a long shot). ME2 is Bioware's shallowest RPG. I can see why someone might prefer one over the other.
Anyway, the best I've played this year is certainly The Witcher 2. Might not be the best this gen - I think I still prefer The Witcher 1, and then there are games like Bloodlines...but TW2 is certainly pretty high up on the list.
witcher 2 for me. I'm enjoying skyrim so far, but it seems more like what oblivion should have been than anything else. Nothing amazing, just well done. Playing skyrim feels like a typical (and fun) "game" experience, but the witcher 2 felt more personal to me and it had that magical touch that baldur's gate gave me.
so definitely witcher 2 for me so far.

Pretty much what I think. For me it was the characters which I pretty much hated and those fetch quests, damn those boring quests of pretty much doing the same thing over and over with useless rewards and there's so many of them and a lot of them timed so I had to force myself doing them. Was such a chore. The story was ok I guess.
The one thing it did very well was the environments, it's the game strongest point.
I wish i could play Withcher 2, but don't have a gaming PC anymore, just my laptop that can't run it. From what i've read about it i'm pretty sure id love it; it might just beat Dark souls which is my goty so far.witcher 2 for me. I'd say my favorite RPGs so far in my life have been Mass Effect 2 and Pokemon Red.
...I lead a sad, pitiful life of RPG gaming...but I hope to end that by getting on board the Elder Scrolls train and catching up. Thinking about getting into the series and from what I've heard around the System Wars board Morrowind is the way to go! :D
I will pick Oblivion and Skyrim up sometime after but for now I'll see where all this Morrowind love is coming from. ;)

Oh I'm sure you will !
Planescape: Torment is the BEST RPG EVER. If you are talking strictly this generation, other than some nice improvements in the graphics department, I can't say anything impressed me. I mean sure, I enjoyed playing Xenoblade and the first Dragon Age, but they weren't nearly as impacting as Bauldur's Gate (the second), Planescape: Torment and other classics (Icewind Dale, i.e).

Oh absolutely - I was honestly surprised that the Wii could pull off such massive and visually-interesting areas, with full day-night/life cycles and everything. When I first hit the Eryth Sea and noticed all of these islands off in the horizon, I remember thinking that there's no way I would be to able to actually just swim/travel to them.
And any time you could see the opposite titan...very very cool.

That sort of went without saying. :P
I'd argue that the recent games aren't even as good as the c|assic JRPGs either, and even the few gems (like The Witcher, Obsidian's games, or anything that pushes the edges of what roleplaying has done in the past) have been lacking in the brilliantly-designed dungeons of old...not to mention plot/characters.
Oh what a decision this could be. Skyrim? Dark Souls?Suddenly, I viddied what I had to do, and what I had wanted to do, and that was to do myself in; to snuff it, to blast off for ever out of this wicked, cruel world. One moment of pain perhaps and, then, sleep for ever, and ever and ever.
I hated oblivion but now i can't believe i am saying this 12 hours into Skyrim that it is my favorite RPG this gen, Witcher 2 takes the second place and Dark Souls third.

Yeah I was not huge on Oblivion or Fallout3, but Bethesda has made its best game since MOrrowind with Skyrim and the best game of the Elderscrolls series (Ive played em all, Arena, Morrowind, Daggerfall, Oblivion and now SKyrim).

If were considering a broad definition of RPG's, then yah, Dark Souls and Skyrim are amazing. However, in a tradtional sense XenoBlade has this year hands down.

Possibly because it's a very traditional game - it was a very solid game all-round, and introduced a few nice WRPG ideas into the JRPG mix, but it didn't really strike out to revolutionise the genre or...leave a lasting impression, or anything.
That's one of the reasons why I greatly preferred The Witcher 2 over Xenoblade - TW2 not only had a solid RPG base, but it was highly ambitious too, and that ambition (mostly) paid off.
The Witcher 2 and Dark Souls are damn good games theres no doubt, but lets face it, no other game can match the sheer scope and freedom of Skyrim. Theres nothing else like playing an Elder Scroll game and having the total freedom to do what ever you want, when ever you want.

I completely agree with you.
Skyrim definitely exceeded my expectations (that werent very high after Oblivion). I think the best RPGs of this gen are Demons/Dark Souls, The Witcher 2 and Skyrim...
You should try Resonance of Fate. Not only is it the best RPG so far this gen, it's the best new IP as well.Nier is a really great RPG despite its flaws, and Valkyria Chronicles is the best RPG that i've played this entire generation.

I spent two hours so far in Skyrim and it's the best RPG since KOTOR. KC_HokieQuotes like this usually incline me to purchase it. How does it rank up against Oblivion? Backstory: I give Oblivion an 8.9/10 and felt dissappointed overall, considering it won more GOTY's than Gears of War.

Maybe bar the menu, which looks very nice but is rather clunky on PC at least, other than that it's better in every way.

I'll be sure to bump it up in my want list.
