The console versions of the game should NOT be considered a platformer though, those are a first person adventure game.

If the primary gameplay mechanic is platforming, then the game is a platformer. Metroid 1, 2, 3, 4, Zero Mission, Metroid Prime, and Metroid Prime 2 are all platformers. Metroid Prime Hunters is a shooter because its primary gameplay mechanic is shooting.

And its puzzles are the primary gameplay mechanic. If you run around Tallon IV or Aether shooting guys, you will get bored after 10 minutes, because that isn't what the gameplay is about.

'Genres' are simply an attempt at keeping order in the vast gaming library. If we weren't so obsessed with classifying everything, Metroid Prime would be a puzzle, platformer, RPG, shooter and adventure game all rolled into one.
