Insomniac - Super Mario Galaxy influenced by Ratchet and Clank

October 4th, 2007

A portion of a Kikizo interview with Insomniac's Ryan Schneider...

Kikizo: You've said that some inspiration is taken from games and movies, but have you found influences of Ratchet in other games?

Ryan Schneider: Yeah, I think that it's flattering... well OK, first of all, there was a PlayStation 2 game which I won't name, that was more or less a direct rip-off of Ratchet and Clank. There's evidence all around us I think, of certain games that have borrowed from Ratchet and Clank. One that we're even extremely flattered by is Super Mario Galaxy, with their spherical worlds; we did spherical worlds in Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal. It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy. Granted, he's doing it in a different way, but it's still a spherical world, so it's flattering to see those sorts of things.

Well, I think that is taking credit for something where credit isn't due. Miyamoto was talking about spherical world ideas as early as 5 years ago, and there have been plenty of other games that did the spherical world ideas long before Ratchet and Clank. On the other hand, maybe Miyamoto is a big fan of Ratchet and Clank...who knows?! Thanks to MrBubbles for the heads up.

It doesn't matter - I don't think there are sphericle worlds because Miyamoto loves him some Rachet and Clank; I think there are sphericle worlds because it makes sense for the gameplay setting, it's set in a friggin' galaxy. With that being said, taking credit for what is essentially a sphere is kind of meh. It's been done before and it's not all that original.

He was referring to a common factor in both games, and even said specifically that it's being done in a different way. Where does the word "copy" come up when he's talking about the similarity?

You did? I hated it!

Then again, it was because I didn't like the levels involving Knuckles and Rouge treasure huning. >_>

The game was still good though.

I hated it when I was younger, but I played it again a couple years ago and found it quite fun. What I will never enjoy, however, is Sonic's gravity room near the end of the game. I never beat that level properly, I got to a high level and did a jump/dash and somehow landed on the platform. :P

It was a great game though, I just wish it had added on to the exploration elements of the first one instead of scrapping the idea.

I borrowed the game froma friend, but now I'm missing it. :(

I agree the gravity rooms were annoying, but it got easier for me the second try. The Tails and Eggman levels were meh, but okay to me.

Taken WAY out of context, he said that Galaxy's spherical worlds were probably influenced by Ratchet and Clank. But the guy did slam Jak and Daxter though.

he was flattered. He thought it was cool miyamoto would like an idea of theres.

How is that being arrogant or claiming nintendo copied. He meant influenced or something close to what they did. Its close. Come on i think every game dev would actually be happy if they saw miyamoto take an idea of theres. I mean thats the biggest dev ever. Its an achievement.

he wasnt being a jerk or anything.

It is arrogance, assuming that it was borrowed from them, which is what he did.

The idea of a spherical world is hardly theirs, and Miyamoto not necessarily (and it's kinda unlikely) got introduced to the idea or got convinced of it's worth by playing Ratchet & Clank.

Please, pro-sony fanboys: The fact that he did not specifically say "copy" or that he did insult Miyamoto does NOT mean he did not claim Miyamoto copied a R&C idea. With better reading comprehension, your posts could be avoided.

What I got from it was the creator of R&C sees that Mario is using sphere worlds, and takes this that Miyamoto has played R&C and liked it so much he used the idea.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

My response: He sounds arrogant to me, to think just because there are sphere worlds in both games that Mario was influenced from R&C. While there is nothing negative about it (besides full originality and who can claim ownership, I guess), the guy comes off as extremely arrogant.

If he's talking about Jak and Daxter being the game that totally ripped it off, then he better get his dates right. Jak and Daxter was released BEFORE Ratchet and Clank. So if anything, they could be asses and say that Ratchet ripped the Jak games off.

Yeah, it's just that single point. I think he's reaching a bit, because I don't remember the worlds being like that in Ratchet and Clank.. but nonetheless. He should be flattered, because Miyamoto is god.

But if I'm not mistaken, he is speaking about Jak & Daxter ripping Ratchet & Clank off right?

No, he's talking about another game, but I don't remember the name. It's basically a complete copy of R&C but you have robot dog instead of clank.

Insomniac didn't even it either. Strike one.

It's simply a feature. Strike two.

Insomniac even said that it was done differently. Strike three.
