Is it just me or is PS2 here to stay in this Gen too? It seems that PS2 still is a top contender in this gen.

[QUOTE="raynimrod"]I'm very impressed by the PS2's sales at present, for its age it is doing a fantastic job.
For the silly fanboys who care only about sales, yes the PS2 is a contender this gen.PS3_3DO
Cell phones have better graphics then the PS2 now.

Nothing only that the PS2 graphics are way behind the times. Another reason people buy the PS2 is to replace a broken one.

Yeah... because 120 million units are a direct result of that...
Dam these fanboys, still bitter because their favorite console got crushed.

I am telling my opinion on the reasons the PS2 keeps on selling. Oh and the games are cheap so I guess that is another reason the outdated PS2 keeps on going.

You're lumping DRE with the RROD together, when they aren't even on the same level.
Or is that some lame attempt to compare the 360 to the PS2?

A hardware problem is a hardware problem to me anyway. Does the fact the best selling console in history had a problematic start bother you? The PS2 got fixed and so will the 360.
[QUOTE="EPaul"]The PS2 is not a contender this Gen it will probably die by 2010Tiefster
I know but i dont think it will sell as much as the Wii, 360 and PS3 over this Gen so it's not a contender. But for it to sell 350k last month after 8 years on the market is quite a feat

The 360 might get fixed, but will not last like the PS2.
The different between the 360 RRoD and the PS2s DRE is that the PS2 was just a defective lens. The system still worked it just couldnt read a disc. And it was easily replaced
The 360 has an unfixable design flaw, and the system can die at any time, and wont even turn on. Huge difference

The problem with that statment is that DRE ocurred after time, PROD is right out of the box. Either you have a top ok 360 or a 360 that will break. DRE happens when the PS2 gets lots of dust inside the lens house and the sliding rails for the lens.

It's amazing that the ps2 is still going. It gets ports from the wii these days anyway, so it has more support than it perhaps would have done. Games like budokai tenkaichi 3, tony hawks downhill jam etc. I saw that one week in japan the ps2 was only 3,000 consoles sold behind the ps3!
The ps2 deserves to still be in the console war. I wonder how many ps2 consoles were sold since the next gen started (2005 when 360 was released). I bet the Ps2 has sold more than the next gen systems from 2005-2008.

Very True the PS2 probably has sold more than the next gen systems from 2005-2008.
Didn't the PS2 outsell the 360 in February?
I think it even outsold the PS3
It is still a contender in my opinion because next-gen has nothing to do with graphics and who cares if it was released earlier?
The 360 was released 1 year before the PS3 and Wii yet lemmings count the sales from that year anyway.
It still has some great games coming out like the MGS: EC, many multiplats that are being released this year, DBZ (for those who like it) and Silent Hill: Origins.
We should probably count its sales from 2005 and forward, you can make it run as an independent console or add them to the PS3's sales but I'm surre it has sold quite well.
The PS2 could be a legend once it's discontinued in the next year or two (maybe longer). As for the disc read problem on the system it could usually be fixed at home in just a few minutes, all that was needed is to clean the lens with a dab of alcohol and a Q-tip or a lens cleaner disc would work.jimm895Does the slim have DRE?
I have had one since launch (slim PS2) and I had never heard of the DRE till I entered gamespot.

I had a slim PS2 before I got a PS3 and it had a problem reading disc a couple of times and I was able to fix the problem fairly easy with what I had stated above. Unfortunatly there is a lot of dust in the area even with everything closed-up it get's in the house quite often and tends to get in all the electronics around here. I have some things that I take apart about once a year or longer. I never heard of the DRE problem until I joined this board and after getting rid of my PS2, that after I got my PS3 was just sitting and doing nothing but getting in the way.

Well the ps2 was fixed after 2 YEARS and the 360 has not been
It has certainly outlasted the Xbox and Gamecube. If you go on Gamerankings.com and click on Rankings and set it to games released within the past 12 months Gamecube and Xbox don't have any but PlayStation 2 has a little over 30.
That being said I wouldn't say that the PS2 is a top contender in this gen. It isn't really a part of this gen. God of War II was the last major release and yes PlayStation 2 is still "alive" but if you're looking to play current gen games, games designed with a 2008 mindset then PlayStation 2 is not the way.
It's kind of like how games like Street Fighter Alpha 2 were released on Super Nintendo in 1996. Super Nintendos were still everywhere at the time but it wasn't the system of choice for those who wanted to play the latest games. You needed a Saturn, PlayStation or Nintendo 64 for that.
Likewise this gen you need an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Wii if you want to play the latest games.
