The humble PC!

They are very cheap. Case and point: ask yourself how much you could rig a pc to play half life 2? then ask yourself if half life 2 owns all wii titles gfx?

They have the biggest back catalogue of games bar none! and emulation to end all!

If you so desire you can beef up your PC to surpass the current gen machines gfx wise.

Quakelive!

MMORGP's

The current consoles strive to be true mulimedia devices when the PC is that and always has been so to a point of perfection.

This was a passing thought i'd put here to see what sort of reasons for against, I won't keep going on about it so there you have it i suppose. Oh one thing i will say is that i own an XBOX 360 and a DS so it's not like i don't see value in consoles too.

you know that the wii is not the only other console this gen right? The 360 and PS3 all own HL2's graphics, plus heck even some of the more polished wii games like Mario Galaxy are right up there with it.

Hmmm, to me it's all about taste.

Sometimes I like my consoles more than PC (though rarely), it;s all about what games are available.

Stop right there, PCs aren't as Cheap as you think. A pure Gaming PC is about $499 and up (you're lucky if you get one for less than that.)

Consoles are just cheap systems to play games and only that.

Initially it is not cheap, but in the long run PCs may end up "cheaper." Usually, the games are cheaper, some DLC is free while the rest are added by mods, and most communities are active enough to make a game last for years.

Of course, it's about how much you want to get out of a PC, so the value may vary.

the reason i mentioned half life 2 and the wii is because the graphics in hl2 will run on a very modest pc indeed and they still better what the wii has to offer visually. I am aware of games at nice as crysis but i very much doubt it'd run on a cheapo pc!

Nah, I'd suggest most people go for an XBOX. Wide variety of good games, solid and extremely easy to use online, and relatively cheap. PC has notable perks, but frankly, it has a lot of hassles associated with it and it *does* cost more any way you cut it. PC gaming isn't for everyone.

The PC isn't a gaming system! It is a MS application device that browses the web, does budgets, uses PDF, Word, Excel, allows for many different browsers etc.

Not the best of arguments if you ask me. A good gaming platform needs to have more low cost titles and less games like Crysis, that sounds odd but let me explain.

Crysis cost $22 million to make and that doesn't include whatever marketing they had. This high investment means they have to sell more copies before breaking even, with higher budget games having to sell even more copies. Eventually the high cost is going to result in a game having to sell a lot before they make a worthwhile return, this inevitably forcing the game cross platform; and it becomes limited by the lowest common denominators to ensure broad compatibility.

Something that set Crysis apart was its open environment, something achieved by loading the entire game level; allowing interactivity and AI activity to occur throughout the level regardless of the players location. Because Crysis aimed so high they ended up going cross platform, resulting in this feature being lost to accommodate console memory capacity. It's the same with any platform, both 360 and PS3 lose their individual merits when a game goes cross platform; as the core game design is made one size fits all.

Because of constantly aiming higher; consoles no longer have strong 3rd party exclusivity, the 3rd party have almost entirely abandoned console exclusivity. PC is the leading platform in 3rd party exclusivity because it is so cheap to work on, it has variable hardware; so technical expectation is not being dictated like it is on consoles. They can produce cheaper games on PC, so the games can stay exclusive and utilize the merits of the PC platform.

PC advantages aren't just graphics, there are things PC games can do that are simply not possible on consoles. Following the blockbuster budget rout just leads to cross platform games; and these platform unique advantages being negated in an effort to ensure broad platform compatibility. That really does put PC in a position were its only advantage is graphics, console limited games at 1080p with better filtering.

Consoles are on a self punishing rout right now, they are hurting their own ability to differentiate themselves by pushing costs so high everyone goes cross platform, leaving it up to them to fund their own exclusives. Why join them? PC is the number one platform for 3rd party development, all the developers who cannot afford going down the 360/PS3 rout will be jumping with PC/Wii/Handholds.

If consoles want to balloon costs then let them, just means more previously console exclusive games coming to PC. PC will still have a technical edge; because as we have seen hardware stakeholders upgrade games for PC to justify their newer hardware.

neither of you should have bothered commenting if you have literally nothing to contribute. at least the third guy added something of substance.

im in full agreement. you dont even need a newish computer. mine is seven years old and with some minimal tweaks here and there i can run most games. additionally, the pc has the undisputed best backlog of available games. a lot of people on these forums like to complain about how old games are better than new ones... well, then i hope you have a pc so you can still play civilization 2 every now and then. the game communities output in terms of mods, skins, editors, etc. alone makes even an old pc blow the consoles out of the water in terms of value. given i still play games based off homeworld (10 years old!), which i originally paid $40 for upon release, that should say something.

Wrong. Actual reality.

I actually would like to game on a PC. I grew up on PC gaming in the 90s so I am not a noob. But I just got tired of fixing buggy software, and keeping up with the latest hardware. Also, I would rather sit in front of my nice 40" tv than a monitor (I already do this all day).

There is no definitive gaming system. Even though the PC can do some amazing things graphically and has its own exclusives, it cannot play the exclusives from other consoles.

Thus the only definitive way to game is to own every system so no game is missed.

Na cause the heat would kill the 360 within 3 months and then the ps3 would die in 6 months due to over heating or a blu-ray drive failure.
