This topic has been of much dispute as of late. I would love to come to some sort of conclusion on what a hardcore gamer really is. In my eyes, a hardcore gamer is someone who wants to experience all of what gaming has to offer. He loves hearing news about games, cant wait till E3 comes around to see the newest games, and doesnt take sides on a particular console because he can only afford that one. When a game comes out on a system he doesnt have, he wishes he owns that system. He doesnt hate on it because he cant play it.

I would consider myself "hardcore" simply because I meet most of this criteria. I may not be a fan of particular genres (RTS really) but I still respect it as a genre and respect the quality of the games in the genre. I own all the consoles and a gaming PC simply because I dont want to miss out on any gaming experience, be it Zelda, Mario, MGS, FF, Halo, Counterstrike and Half Life, or any other huge franchise. I consider gaming a hobby, and cannot wait to see what the future holds for it.

So what do you guys think? Accurate enough?

Hardcore gamer to me, means complete gaming addict, that will literally put everything off (social activities, school, work, sports, everything) to game as much as possible in a day, may even stay up for multiple days just to gain a few more achievements.

They tend to have gamerscores of 10k+, no gf/bf (whatever the case may be), and either be flopping out of college, or 30+ and living at home with their parents paying all the bills, so they can use whatever money they making working part time at a games store to buy more and more games.

Dude, I wanted to define hardcore gamer, not loser.

Dont mean to offend anybody really, but I have to work, I want a career but I still consider gaming my hobby.

Just because I choose to have a career and a social life doesnt mean Im not hardcore about gaming.

See, it's simple sentences like these that should be used to answer such questions. Nothing complex, just a few easy words and presto, your done! It explains it to even the most confused person on what hardcore gaming is.

Someone who's really passionate about games. I don't think play time has anything to do with it-- there are people who play Bejeweled for four hours a day but that doesn't make them hardcore, imo.

I think different gamers are hardcore for different reasons. Someone who only plays one game or genre really can't be considered hardcore.

"hardcore gamer"

-any person who craves for games as a major part of their life;

-a person who will put gaming as an obligation;

-a person who will grasp any type of games regardless of how good or bad it is.

-a person who doesn't bash or hate on other games but rather buy them or own them.

ie: Me :D , and game developers.

I like every games regardless of which system they're on or how bad they are.

My own personl view is someone who keeps up with videogaming news and games, plays alot of videogames and is good at videogaming (not necessarily all genres but in general, some one might kick ass at RTS but might suck at Fighters, or vice versa) and plays games from outside the mainstream ie doesn't mainly play FIFA, Madden, GTA, etc.

Its a very hard thing to define and I think most people avoid using it because there is a huge spectrum of gamers not just casual and hardcore.

for the a millionth time. HARDCORE is someone who buys alot of video games every year. CASUAL is someone who buys like 2 games a year. Go ahead, try to prove me wrong, this is the simplest and best answer. (the terms were invented by game publishers (EA), all they care about is how many games are being sold per customer)

when i was a kid there was no such thing as hardcore gamer. it think it was a creation of the media. now days there are all kinds of game guides and hints you could find online. when i was a kid it was up to you or you could waste money and call nintendo's hint line. there was no internet back in my day. but now looking back, i think video games were more hardcore back then in the 80s. before the term "hardcore gamer" ever existed.

If thats really the definition of a hardcore gamer, then I am definitely not one of them. I dont really care either way, its just trying to pigeonhole someone. Im just trying to see what gamers think.

but what if those videogames are the Sims, Brain Training, and alot of other 'casual' games

wouldnt the fact that that person is buying nothing but casual games make them a "casual gamer" by definition?

lol well basicall im just bored at work wishing the weekend would come, so really i could beat GTA4 since it feels like its taking forever. in reality, the whole hardcore thing is a little ridiculous. the thing that really bothers me is the people who own one system and pretend to talk about other systems games like they own them. fanboys drive me nuts on this forum.

i guess my ultimate point is that every system has something to offer, and your really missing out if you choose to dismiss one of them. (not to say that i dont have an opinion on the current state of all of the plats. even though the wii is selling great, my wii is collecting dust. the games just arent appealing to me which is almost upsetting in a way)

I believe you can love gaming and be a gamer and have a life, I don't believe you can be a gaming addict (aka hardcore gamer) and have a life. Just like a hardcore anything really, I love rugby, but, I don't play/practice rugby 20 hours a day, putting everything but rugby off, however, professional rugby players do, and are therefore hardcore, get it?

Besides, a hardcore gamer would be far too busy gaming to post on this or any forum.

Some of us were there and we know :P ever heard of the Vic 20, Apple or the BBC? As for 1982 are you talking about donkey kong? it wasn't even on a nintendo system it started out as an arcade game and was ported to other consoles, and yes PC's! The NES wasn't released in the west until the mid 80's by which time there were a whole host of PC's out like the sinclair spectrum, C64,etc etc

One and the same...

they dont like it if its not cool anymore :D

So you guys truly believe you cant love gaming and have a life at the same time?

If thats really the definition of a hardcore gamer, then I am definitely not one of them. I dont really care either way, its just trying to pigeonhole someone. Im just trying to see what gamers think.

Besides, a hardcore gamer would be far too busy gaming to post on this or any forum.

there is a difference between an addict and hardcore.

lulz.

To be hardcore, I don't think you should limit yourself to one genre, or even to one console. Hating on other consoles? I guess you'd be limiting your consoles right there, and by my definition not "hardcore" :O

I think most of your critieria is BS.

Being hardcore doesnt require you to love all games equally, experience all gaming has to offer or any of that trash. You're just preaching some maticore-ish jesus-esque foolishness.

Being hardcore to me means that whatever game/s you've chosen, you are a master of everything about that game. You know the game in and out and have perfected it in every way.

People who do legit speed runs (not breaking a game) and play professionally are hardcore. Hardcore is the definition of gaming perfection.

Someone who uses gaming as their primary form of entertainment, and as a result they devote a significant portion of their free time to it. PBSnipes

I agree with this!

It has nothing to do with how broad your taste for games are. You could hate almost every genre out there, be a huge annoying fanboy, and still be "hardcore" if you still had gaming as your primary form of entertainment and devoted significant free time to it. Of course, significant isn't easily defined.

A open minded gamer and hardcore gamer aren't necissarily one in the same, though they could be.

"harcore" is pretty damn difficult to define... especially since there are so many "self-proclaimed" hardcores here on SW and many other people who like to think a game is kiddy just so they can keep thinking they aren't mssing out. anyway... "hardcore"... has nothing whatsoever with which system/s you own. more so depends on dedication, budget, interest for gaming news etc. a lot of things define "hardcore".
