lol here goes 1st thread and all...

I have been reading the threads in these forums for a while now.... there seems to be a lot of talk about Nintendo destroying "hardcore" gaming aspect of this industry... And i have to disagree completely......

Nintendo seems expanding the market by allowing it to be more accessible to casuals, I have loved playing Video/Computer games since I was a kid... i remember when i first starting playing video/computer games... I was very much a "casual" gamer... so when I first saw a game by Apogee on the PC called Commander Keen.. I was amazed... From that moment myself as a gamer evolved.... So basically I started as a "casual" gamer....

I was in the lounge with my family last night when I realised how much the Wii appealed to everyone hardcore/casual alike. My brother who decided to get a 360 last Christmas (While i was away traveling) and yes he played on it for the first few weeks, then it just sat there gathering dust, till i returned. Yesterday the same brother saw the advert for Mario and Sonic at the Olympics and goes out and buys it (i held my head shame) then when the whole famaily were around the TV playing, i was very pleased, they didn't care about it being in HD or how good the graphics were, because they were having toooooooooooo much FUN!

Nintendo are making it stronger, say 20% of the people who buy the Wii over the next few years, want something more challenging or better graphics they'll buy it... there is and always will be a hardcore market. I supose what i am trying to say is will all started some where... I bet most of you didn't go out as a new gamer and buy Call of Duty or BF2 or Obilivion.. you looked at something that was easy and fun and then you grew as gamers.. You looked for a new challenge something maybe more difficult, better graphics e.t.c

Dammit Bloodfin hurry up and load

FLAME SHEILD UP!

I have played and beat all 6 Commander Keen games. Loved those games not sure what point you are getting at. But I still loved the Commander Keen games and would buy another one if it came out.

The new Nintendo ds adverts are advertising zelda, mario and animal crossing to girls... Under the 2games for girls motto". No nintendogs in sight. Seems to m Nintendo are trying to get non gamers into gaming by using brain training and slowy making them into newcore gamers with zelda.

Hardcore, softcore, mainstream. It comes with taste. Nintendo has that. I would say thow their maybe more Hardcore in some ways, because they go out on a limb. FPS are now the Softcore of the wannabe gamer. FPS is the true standard for every wannabe to go by via Halo of whatever. If you think about it, Microsoft was the expert on creating wannabe products, thus they created the wannabe gamer lol. Their pros at it.

What i trying to get across was how Nintendo was expanding the gaming market and making it more accessable to non-gamers... not destroying it with the Wii

So after 20+ years of gaming I am now a "wannabe" because I enjoy Halo? I guess I need to re-asses.

It's already been dumbed down alot. Compare Castlevania 1/3 to it's contemporaries (2d only). The younger gamer crowd (Who are incidently the ones who call them selves "Hardcore") have necessitated a drop in the difficulty level in games, quite a shame if you ask me.

Since the franchises were born. They are a lot more dedicated than games like Halo and Gears. Remeber children, a game doesn't need guns and blood to be good.

Since when does casual = not good? Maybe you should be calling the person who had OOT as one of there first games a "kid" , not someone who has likely been gaming longer then you have been alive.

i remember Iwata or someone saying that yes, they are targetting the casuals this gen, mainly .. but there are still games for the hardcore like SSBB

the vision is that in the future, maybe next gen, a lot of today's casuals will be more hardcore gamers

First of all Imis phrased that, I meant non-hardcore. Second, I didn't call anyone a kid it was a general statment, that and I don't particulaly care how long you've been gaming, remember the Fountin? Yea that was my first console

I,ve just come back to gaming at 37 and found I,m getting (Owned, Pwned is that right? LOL) both in single play and on line. Its not much fun!

FEAR I gave up on after running around a warehouse in the first few levels desperately looking for bullets and someone to shoot. I eventually you tubedmy way through but thought why so hard on the easy setting.

Thank god for Cod4. An easy setting to teach noobs but a hard setting for the hardcore gamer. Why cant all games come like that? Seems pretty simple? No need to dumb the game down but just provide the option just to help get new gamers into gaming.

Anyone want to buy a newish copy of FEAR

Hardcore gaming died a long time ago...and now every game labeled "casual" takes a lot of flak (the majority usually don't sell that well either), while titles that are extremely accessible to both hardcore and casual players (they usually sell extremely well, or they can anyway) are revered. Games like Halo, Guitar Hero, easy and appealing action titles like God of War, etc. are the titles that are casual. They cater to both groups of gamers which in turn makes them reach an even larger audience. I mean sure, there are some people that just like those games and are predominantly one type of gamer or the other, but then there are pure casuals that buy these games, along with people who mainly play hardcore titles like RPGs, RTS, etc. who buy them as well.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer. I have had evey system evermade since the original nin. I loved ninja gaiden everyone said it was to hard, but I found it to be easy for me . Other than ninja gaiden I dont like my games to be really hard, dieing all the time is irrating and gets old, I am happy with the difficulty settings of todays games.

Well, I didn't mean necessarily difficulty, but I see what you mean. I prefer different settings, and I too don't mind if a game has the ability to be played by both casuals and hardcore players (the game should still take ability to play though; not be a mindless run n' gun fest for example). I guess I just prefer games with depth to them, games that take a bit more thought than others.

The destruction of hardcore gaming started when click based adventure replaced text input adventure. Those annoying casuals mindlessly clicking away never able to understand the joys of having to input the correct text for the correct action.

If you are talking to me You missed my point completely! I was not saying that was Hardcore, please read it properly!

What I was saying Nintendo have opened up a whole new market.... its now more appealing to a non-gamer market!

I was pointing out most gamers started as casuals... cause I tell u what my first game weren't Rome Total War!

There's diffrent kinds of "hard" that i like and dislike. When something is hard as in cheep and frustrating then yeah i dont like that. But games like ninja gaiden where its not really hard but its challenging its good and the more challenge the more fun you have. But theres also some games were difficulty settings wouldn't change how easy a game is like Zelda games where the challenge isnt in combat but in puzzles(although the combat is fun too). And for those, I also would like games to be more harder.

Harcore gaming died with the SNES.

That's so BS. Hardcore gaming became more acceptable with PS/PS2, that's all.

And enough with this "Ninty has to ignore hardcore to expand industry". Sony put out lots of hardcore games while in the same time expanding the industry without forcing casual games on to the hardcores, wich seems waht Miyamoto is doing.

arrrrrrrggggghhhhhh thats my point they are not!!!!! Many people are posting Nintendo are destroying "hardcore gaming"......... I am a PC gamer, X-Box 360 gamer, DS gamer and a Wii gamer!!!!

There will always be a "hardcore market" look at the 1 mil + of WOW players, the massive on-line community for Guild Wars, SWG, Look at the FPS community's on-line for both PC, 360 and PS3!

Everyone has different opinions of what is hardcore! I got 2 opinions on that one the amount of time and dedication people put into gaming, the 2nd is there are hardcore/cult games which only certain people play, because most will look at it and turn away (Rome Total War, Fire Emblem, Blue Dragon, Eye of the Beholder, Football Manager, list goes on!)

Proof Nintendo's influence is hurting gaming:

Seriously, this is ridiculous. Its the exact same color and markings on each button that the normal 360 controller does. They're just more in-line. Either way, a novice player will have to look down and memorize the buttons, no matter which controller. So, why even make these controllers? Because the casuals don't want to think. They want something that looks nice and easy. Lame.
