www.kotaku.com/5305087/ads-coming-to-xbox-360-dashboard/

Now, i was reading and some lemmings said that this advertising is no different that advertisements on Cable

There is a BIG difference between cable advertisements and cable commericals.

Commericals on cable is what pays the people who make TV Shows. No Commercials = No $$$ For people who make the TV Shows = No Good TV Shows. (ive taken 1 1/2 years of TV Studies, i know this stuff by heart) The Advertiser pays the TV Channel $$$ to put their commercial during a certain timeslot, then a % of what is paid goes to the show that the commercial is being put into.

The Advertisements that Microsoft is doing, is just For profit.

There is a difference between Cable Advertising & Xbox Live Advertising.

They gotta get profit streams somehow into Microsoft, and it doesn't have to cost the user anything extra, so whatever.

if true that would be a joke. in the uk we have a satellite service called sky which basically owns everything you're either sky or freeview(which is pants). you pay a premium for their sky sports channels and they have ads too, which is a joke. they should stop the xbox gold fee or have this only for silver users if this goes through.

and this kind of thinking is why M$ can keep milking the lemmings with xbox live and they failed hard on the pc with Windows Live trying to get Hermits to play for online play. It seems Lemmings just want to be milked and love to pay $50 year to have ads on their dashboard instead of thinking why are we paying M$ $50 and accept ads don't they make enough money out of our wallets already?

Um... Microsoft has no say in whether or not a game supports Games for Windows Live... that would be the developers of the games... Nice try though.

You pay a premium for that because they have to pay a crap load of money to aquire the rights to show those games. And there are barely any ads, if it's anything like Sky Movies they show the entire film ad free and just have about 10 minutes of ads between films, which when you consider there are about 400 channels on Sky, you're not going to be watching...

I never said M$ has a say in whether a game uses it or not. What I said was they expected pc gamers to pay $50 a year, like the lemmings, to use the service. And guess what? nobody payed for the service and now it's FREE on the pc! you lemmings are being used like tools and defend M$ for it that's just stupid

I don't see how paying for a premium service means I am being used like a tool...? Especially since it is only $50 for an entire year... Also... I am not a lemming... I own a 360, PS3 and a PC and play them all...

There's more than one business model that includes advertising. Magazines and newspapers for instance. Both are supported by subscriptions as well as ads which is a widely accepted practice.

And what about in-game advertisements? Product placement in movies and TV shows?

Once ads interrupt my gaming experience, I'll start complaining. Otherwise, it really isn't a big deal.

You had to go to a specialized school and learn TV studies for a year and a half just to know that commercials on television pay for the shows...?

*cough cough* I think this guy is slow... *cough*

And who cares if Microsoft has advertisements on Live...? Most of them are for actual things on Live like releases/DLC/Movies/Netflix etc... not just advertisements in general... and they don't interrupt anything... I am never forced to look at advertisements while I am playing games (unless the games themselves have advertisements)...

AXE deodorant and Head and Shoulders Shampoo has nothing to do with gaming, yet I see it on my dashboard when I log on (US) .

IMO, Live is the best online service with PSN coming 2nd and the Wii... I dont call that online.

When I see the others getting Live like service all for free, then I will question about that HEFTY sum of $50 for a whole year. If my whole dashboard is coverd like a racing car, I would also question.

I work in the television industry on the advertising side and everything you said is oversimplifying a complex subject.

Television ads do not directly pay for the production of TV shows, Production companies do.Ad revenues go to the network which in turn use the revenue for operations. TV shows are produced before a penny is even spent in advertising. Once a show is produced, it is shopped around to get advertisers onboard.

It is just like any other service... Say you are a Gamespot subscriber... When you first go to gamespot.com... you see advertisements until you log in...

Similar to Xbox Dashboard... you turn on your console and go to the dashboard... that is the main page... and you see adds until you play games...

Remember that the Xbox Live dashboard is the same for EVERYONE... So you with your gold account logging in are seeing the same thing that little Timmy with his silver account over there is seeing... The Xbox Dashboard is like a website... they aren't going to make it especially for you... it is for everyone...

As long as the ads aren't interrupting my gaming (IE not forcing me to watch 30 second commercials before I can play a game), I couldn't care less.

You say better for us gamers, I say more expensive for us gamers. Anyway the difference between TV and ads and gaming is ads is at least with TV you get the TV shows for free. With MS you still pay for the games, you still pay for online and still have to watch ads. Its a win-win-win for MS all the way around, but as long as the majority of 360 owners are okay with the abuse they'll keep doing it. Lemmings remind me of women who won't leave a bad relationship.

Exactly. I love the comments about how 360 is profitable because the people that brag about it forget that they paid/pay to get/keep them there with annual fees and advertising. Even if you took only 5 million gold subscribers and said they each paid $50 per year, you could see how MS would pull in a billion over 4 years. And they talk about its profibility like its due to doing something so right.

shh....i have sky also. be careful....sky might hear you and make u pay dearly for your insubordination. carteful..i think were being watched. :P sky is a complete rip off though but they are the evil dictators and overlords of all TV in the UK and ireland. at least in sky movies they dont show adds during the movie...its just a straight run through. but they are brutal with the adds and fees because they know they can be. as for this xbox live advertising....well its MSs console so if u dont like it then tough. get another console or put up with it. hopefully it means free online play....but i doubt it.

What are they doing wrong? XBL has always been a subscription service. This gen it is intergrated into the 360 hardware and all of it's games..Lets put aside the whining about whether it should be free or not, MS created a service and it's successful for them, what's the problem?

Okay with the "abuse"? I love how Sony fans refer to Xbox Live fees as rip offs and apparently, "abusive" as if it's some sort of universal truth. Surely, no one could possibly see any sort of worth in paying for Xbox Live and the services it offers.

i find ads on tv way worse than the ads on xbox live. on tv i have to constantly wait for the tv show i want to watch (especially here in the uk, they can be 5 mins long which is agonising for an impatient person like me), whereas on xbox live, you see the add, then you just go straight to playing your game

yeah it really is great, i wish psn has it sometime in the future. but i think less people talk in game during multiplayer games now.

They don't "Gotta" do anything.

They are making a ton of profits from the users as is.

What are they doing wrong? XBL has always been a subscription service. This gen it is intergrated into the 360 hardware and all of it's games..Lets put aside the whining about whether it should be free or not, MS created a service and it's successful for them, what's the problem?

Hey, why not charge $100 for games too, right? i mean, it would make these companies more profitable, right? So that's all pluses for everyone, right? You know its wrong. Just like Sony charging $600 for a gaming console was wrong. But I don't see you defending that!

It takes money from your pocket that shouldn't be taken in the first place. Its sets a precedent for all online gaming to have fees. If you don't see how that can adversely affect gaming, you are really in need of an eye exam.

I like how you simply chose one part of my overall statement and point.

Was a $600 PS3 a good idea? (and don't use sales as a counter, even if it was the number one selling console at $600 it would be f-ed up)

Who said it shouldn't? You? Don't forget this is a business. Companies have the right to charge for what they want (as long as it is legal, of course), just like we have the right to pay or not.

So how do you want me to "judge" if it is a bad idea or not? You mean, if I liked the price or not? Besides, that's a poor comparison. The 600 price tag directly affected gamers. These advertisements do not.

If ads become commonplace on XBOX live when they weren't before, and they don't pass the savings off to the consumer, I can see why XBOX users feel cheated in a way.

I don't like ads in the things I pay for. I don't like ads before my DVD's that I buy that I have to skip through each time I watch it.

And if I had an ad on my CD music before disc played it would burn me up.

It also irks me when I'm playing a game and there is a blatent ad that kind of detracts from the experience. If they said 'Hey, we are charging $5 less and we can do that because we allowed ads.' I might be OK with that, but when something has ads and is the same price as always, it just comes across as selling out.

But yes, ads are popping upeverywhere and to me, it's getting annoying.

They gotta get profit streams somehow into Microsoft, and it doesn't have to cost the user anything extra, so whatever.Phazevariance

MS is still a company, they need money to make things happen, it's not like backbone infastructure just 'appears' out of no where without any cost! As far as I'm concerned, it's not costing me anything, I don't have to watch them manditory like you do on TV, and it helps bring in profit used to secure games for the 360 console with developers, it helps new projects like 'natal' get funded, and drives research for the next xbox console... all of these while not falling into profit loss like the competition, *ahem* Sony... I am willing to bet you anything that Sony is jealous that MS is doing this well and still ending up with profit at the end of the year. Thhey haven't posted the highest loss in their company to date, like Sony has. So yes, they 'gotta' bring in profit streams.
