I only say that not because Sony, MS, or Ninty are the ones to make that decision but because of the publishers. Think about this, if Activision, Ubisoft, and EA team up and tell Sony, "Unless the PS4 (or whatever) implements DRM, we will not support it." Sony will have to oblige or go the way of Sega. The same scenario goes towards MS or Ninty.

This may just be a conspiracy but I believe this is the best explanation to these rumors...

Of course... they are just rumors.

I doubt they are true, and I think it's more to stop pirating, which is more of a concern for MS and Sony than the publishers, although of course they want to stop it too.

The publishers get paid off of game sales, the Big 3 get residuals.

Nintendo has never once cared what third party developers think, they would probably go tell them to f*k themselves. Sony and M$ are the only one who would be their lap dogs.

More like third parties giving the cold shoulder when it comes to high profile games.

Nintendo systems float on Nintendo games, everything else is just a bonus. They don't need third parties.

I hope it's true and that it fails so hard that they will never use DRM for games again, and that this will succeed so well that good games will prosper and the bad will fade out without excuse.

I'm not too worried about it. With PS3 willing this gen by a mile, PS4 would be able to lock in a ton of exclusive titles and dictate the future of gaming. Given that, fewer people will want to sell their games because PS4 will have a higher quality game than the Xbox (720?).

That logic is flawed as if Activision and EA did not support games on the major consoles, they would be out of buisness. Those companies could not survive from computer sales alone.

This is true. Third parties have only made games for Nintendo because of their market share, that is why developers left Nintendo in droves during the PS1 vs N64 era; Nintendo never treated any third party well.

Why couldn't the console makers all do the same thing and unify against the publishers? If they are putting their potential sales at risk by implementing the absurd DRM system, don't they have plenty of reason to all agree and not give in? They have way more power than the publishers. Without the consoles they have no other way to make money (other than PC, where the pirating is even worse)

Also it's pretty clear that Nintendo can survive without 3rd party support. Despite losing money the last year or so, this had been a successful console generation for them even with abysmal (non-existant) 3rd party support. Sony has a ton of high quality exclusive IPs. Not sure how well they could actually profit off only their own IPs, but the quality would certainly be there. And I'm sure if it came down to it Microsoft could reach into their endless pockets and create some popular new IPs. They already have 2 system seller which is more than Sony can say.

I have to agree, the consistency of the rumours is troubling and publishers have been crying for it.

Or Sony, MS, and Nintendo could band together and just tell them to piss off.

It only takes one to screw things up. Let's say Sony and Nintendo say screw off and MS accepts the offer. MS would get all of the third party games while the other systems get screwed.

DarkGamer007

Not really true. It was threats from Activision to no longer support the PS3 that made Sony lower the price of the PS3 to $299.

All 3 consoles are dependent on 3rd parties now more than ever. If they were to loose EA or Activision it would be devastating to any of them.

Something needs to happen to shift the power. Maybe PC is the way to go.
