Gamesfreak has finally opted to try something a bit different for the Pokemon games after so many years, but what comes next after sun and moon? Seem like they might have to discard the generic gym battles and find something new and fresh for the next game. Past games have always been a bit hampered by archaic game design choices as if they were stuck in the late 90s.

Battles

I'm not exactly digging the Z-moves but it looks like there trying some new ideas for pokemon and player bonds ever since mega evolution. Battles have become a bit more immersive but with Switch coming around this holds the question when new technology comes around will battles begin to see more major changes.

Expectation?

Gamefreak is willing to try new ideas amidst that some can be generally good such as new pokemon forms or maybe a bit skeptical such as the Z-moves. As someone who has played the games for years I expect more changes for the good and more immersion which Sun and Moon seem to be doing something a least right to some extend. What do you expect from the series?

I expect more Pokemon bonding. I saw a trailer and it looked like you could pet your Pokemon. I thought that was pretty awesome. I still dont know enough about the older Pokemon games to know which direction to go. But i like the team battling it appeared to have.

I think a more advance way of hatching Pokemon would be sweet. Or maybe more advance ways of taking care of them. Also giving them more emotions would be cool. Like we all have a Charizard, but maybe mine is mean and bad all the time.

Can I just say the names Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Fini are probably the worst pokemon names of all time.

In terms of just the structure of the adventure, it just seems like a spin on the badge challenge that's subverted from the setting. I expect the franchise stick with this general idea as the games have been more direct in what the region has been inspired from (France, Hawaii). And there's alot more cultures that the games can draw from to use as a framework for the next game.

More ways to expand the online features is something they'll be iterating more on. It's still quite primitive. The GTS system needs more filters like 'nature' or an 'inspect and confirm' structure to it. I want things like rating leaderboards and stats within the game instead of having it tied to the Global Link website. There's already a VS recorder, but no ability to watch high rated matchups. More 'profile functions' that you/friends can access. Seasonal balance passes would be nice as well as more focused thematic leagues/seasons to keep things interesting. Maybe some fun casual content like competitive Safari Zone challenges. More support apps similar to what they've done with Pokemon Bank: Maybe just move Global Link to this format. Introduce an app version of the Pokewalker. An app that allows remote trading to the GTS from the Pokemon Bank/PC storage.

I like the idea of Z-Moves in the same way as Mega evolutions because it takes up an item slot - they just need to be be more smart about who gets access to them. I hope it doesnt do something stupid like break past Protect or ignore reflect/barrier.

@lamprey263: Dragon Quest V in 1992 to be exact.

@illmatic87: That was inspired by Tamagotchis they say and released after Pokemon. It was to be Tamagotchis for boys.

I guess its not true though, Pokemon was in production before 1990 they stated. They say it took 6 years to complete.

I wonder if they will make a remake of an older game before a next big entry like they have done so far. Diamond/Pearl are next in line but they are already playable on the 3ds (although you can't directly bring pokemon from them to the newer games, you have to do it through Black/White). I haven't played diamond/pearl and the black and white games so I'm excited by this.

As for a main entry after Sun and Moon, it will probably take a while. They may even do it on Switch if it proves successful, however pokemon games were always handheld games and switch isn't really a handheld console. I wouldn't put it in my bag and play on the train on the way to work. I would be afraid of damaging it.

It seems that Alola will be the greatest departure from the series norms we've seen and it's a great combination of new things and nostalgia factors, like the alolan forms of 1st gen pokemon and Red and Blue. (Marked as spoiler for those who haven't watched the latest trailers). One concern I have is that the game may be too easy, like X/Y was. Struggling to beat Red at the end of pokemon crystal is one of my fondest memories of the series.

There going have to step up there game with the challenges maybe replace the elite four with something harder.

I'm predicting a Diamond and Pearl remake coming out in the next couple years. With all the rumors going around about a Pokemon game coming out soon on Switch, I honestly have no idea what that game will be since we're about to get Sun & Moon next month and it would be too soon for a new generation. Pokemon Snap 2? Stadium 3?

Make a Pokemon game that is at least as good as Gold/Silver. I don't care at all about beauty contests or any of that other nonsense that continues to be prevalent in Pokemon games.

Pokemon Gold/Silver came out in 2000 and has yet to be surpassed. Introduce a new Pokedex, breeding, a new region all while being familiar and then after you think the game has ended....take you back to the original region to play the entire original game again only with trainers much more difficult than anything else you faced before!
