the wii for nintendo has been an amazing success, its been pretty much there licence to print money, small development costs, huge profits on all the hardware sold. But what is the future for nintendo with this line of marketing?

I feel they might struggle in generations to come, how on earth will you make a "wii 2" the majoirty of people who have brought a wii are intrigued about it as a toy instead of a games console, of course that is not the whole market as everyone who brought a gamecube would likely buy a wii. But will all the "casual" market be game to buy a new games console when they already own a Wii?

For us "hardcore" gamers buying new hardware is a fun experience i personally love it when a new console comes out to sus out the new hardware and its capabilityies, so im always willng to shed out the $ to buy it. i'm pretty sure the majoirty of the "casual" market would not feel the same.

So what do you think will be nintendos next move? Wii lite(720p version of the wii? )

meh I think I've given up on Nintendo consoles, but I do miss a good old mario game, I wish they left the console business and just made games. It's really irritating to have to buy a nintendo console practicaly just for mario/zelda. I do hope they come out with somehting just as powerfull as the other consoles next gen, maybe 3rd party support will go up and the console will be worth something.

I think their next console will be a more powerful Wii. Just show all the fun of Wii with HD graphics on the ads, and people will probably be all over it.

i was not impressed about having to buy a wii and support the trend just to play SMG and Zelda TP. But those games made it worht it, they are excellent games.

If more gamers supported the Wii's good 3rd party games like Boom Blox, Zack & Wiki, No More Heroes, etc, there would be absolutely nothing to worry about.

However, if 3rd party (quality) games continue selling poorly, I fear 3rd party support could start to dry up, and I really don't want to see that happening.

if they left the console business where would microsoft and sony get there ideas from?

the market wouldnt make as much money as they are making now, if nintendo left. Nintendo cant leave the market. sony and microsoft can afford to leave, since there basically like the same company.

my feeling is that until they release major titles on the wii with good advertising they should have no expectation that these obscure 3rd party titles will sell all that much. heck we've seen what RE titles that are several year old ports and a spin off can sell as well as GH3. So i'm sure other big titles would sell well also.

it would be more how would they market it. If i told my dad for example the wii was being revnovated with new HD graphics ie 720p they would just say to me "what does that mean?". I feel people have brought a wii not because of the graphics but becuase of the wii mote / wii sports idea. So i think nintendo would have a hard time selling Wii Mk:2 with say 360 hardware in it.

how do they market the new ipods? new colors, smaller, nothing that huge until video ipods got introduced.

for the wii, sure they'll have better graphics. but who says they won't have more and improved motion sensing as well?

I am up and down with the Wii. I was a hater, then a major supporter....now im just kind of MEH. I have lost a lot of interest in the little guy. I see very little that interests me for the rest of the year. VC does not interest me anymore and the Wii Ware games are leaving me flat. I am not interested in any more Mario games..period. I am hoping to see some quality games in 2009 that are not Mario titles or sequels.......

ipods get sold though asthetics and a number next to them eg 80gb, people believe bigger = better, and people are very familer with gb's.

wel the wii didnt invent motion sensing so i don't personally see how they will further progress that technology, but i will be interested to see that if thats what they propose to do, i dont think there is that much which can be do with motion controls and games. Its like light guns they work with some games but are not suited to everything.

Nintendo have upped there marketing power though, i mean ive seen more Wii adverts than GC,n64 and snes put together.

i will be intrigued to see, i mean the wii and the ds ( which is not that revolutionary in my oppion) are the only changes they have made over the last 20years apart from obviously the conception of home entertainment systems. I do feel somtimes that nintendo are not as revolutionary as they would like to believe. They have done nothing more than introduce motion sensative remote witha light gun and a touch screen into gaming in the last 4 years, nether idea is that original. Wii Sports is original, and is the pinciple of the wii mote.

But i agree nintendo have a marketing power like apple a tthe moment, consumers practiclaly eat off there hands.

Wii didn't invent motion sensing but ipods weren't the first mp3 players either. The Wii popularized it and is now known for it.

As for not much which can be done with it. that's just silly. we're only starting to scratch the surface of what can be done. comparing it to a light gun is rediculous. it does so much more. look at the mouse. it's like the wiimote with less range of motion and see the different ways it's used. the wiimote is basically a 3D mouse. now add in the nunchuck that has motion sensing as well. maybe the balance board too. there's a lot of untapped potential.

also we don't know what other things they could add. Head tracking?

first TC, a games console is a toy. PS3, 360 and wii. all toys. electronic toys. plonk linux on a PS3 and use it for other stuff and maybe it could be called a PC under those circumstances. but they are toys.

as for nintendo...the wii is a great start but there is a ton of room for improvement. the wiimote and nunchuck have many areas that need to be improved and, of course, the wii itself also needs work.

heres a few areas that i think they could work on to make a consoles as successful, if not mroe so, than the wii.

1) bring more PC control tech to the wii. so a scroll wheel...for selecting weapons quickly. improved motion sensors accross the board. improved IR camera. and a few more buttons on the nunchuck.

2) HDD as standard. doesent need to be too big but a HDD as standard is a must next gen (or alot of storage..if they can do it with flash memory then all the better).

3) greatly improved horsepower. not necessarily PS4 levels but certainly significantly more powerful than a PS3. as well as being able to use the wiimote in conjunction with vastly improved physics (great potential for fun right there), itll also improve 3rd party relations since they can make a Wii, 720 and PS4 title without needing to make seperate versions. 15GB discs at the least also....and it needs to be fast.

4) improved online. keep it free and easy to use but bring coms into it. really an online system with no communications is basically pointless. it doesent need to have every feature under the sun, just a basic friends list, reliable service and coms.

5) dont release for anything more than $300 at launch and have a game to show it off in the box.

with all the money ninty are making...they have alot of options open to em.

I didnt say anywhere that i believe M$ or sony are revolutionary. But they dont advertise there consoles as revolutionary, they advertise them as "next gen" which is all they are an advancement from the last generation.

I like the post talking about further developments which could be made, i agree with some.

I feel that nintendo should give gamers the option to play games with a normal pad ( like they have done in SSBB and mario kart ) and use the wii mote for games which are suitable to use it rather than trying to use it for everything, as its not suited for everything.

Its a good example to show the innaccuracys invovled with the wii mote system, look up the speed runs for zelda TP , even with faster loading times it takes the same guy nearl an hour longer to do the gamecube version. Mario kart is another example the majoirty of competitive people online use GC or ****c controllers, why? becuase they are more accurate in skilled hands. The wii mote is best for begininers.

Out of interest why are you such a huge supporter of nintendo products? I am just stating my oppion onwhat they have done ad where they can go with the Wii franchise, no comparison to other consoles.

Maybe I just imagined the sony marketing of the ps3 as if it was the next coming of Christ.

i'm sorry but you must not play a lot of mario kart. there are many MANY amazing racers that only use the wheel. I would say that the wheel is best for noob casuals and real pros. the analog stick is for noob gamers and good racers. It takes much more skill to drive well with the wheel because it actually gives more control to the player. there's no auto centering like analog sticks have which makes it a lot easier.

If anything i am Anti Sony i feel they do the least to try and revolutionise the gaming arena. But i will save my oppions on that for a thread about that. M$ pushed heavily media center and the xbox live experience and marketplace. Which are Very good services.

There are no stats for mario kart for me to share so its just my oppion against yours so its abit of a waste of tiem debating that. But what about SSBB? As a Uk resident i dont have a copy but i hear from my american friends its Gamecube pad all the way. I found it very strange that nintendo would use a old gamepad on there new console, to me that shows they must understand the wii mote is not suitable for all the "hardcore" crowd?

Very simple. Just look at the PS1 and PS2. They both sold 100 million consoles, most to casuals. If people are willing to shell out money for a PS2 even after they owned a PS1, why wouldn't they shell out money for a Wii 2 after the Wii 1?

SSBB doesn't really use motion sensing at all so i can see why ppl stick with what they are used to. I don't think it has to do with "hardcore" as much as the playstyle of the game. there's a lot of button pressing that happens in one match. you don't want to have shaking or gestures to substitute for that much pressing. that style of gameplay isn't designed with the wiimote in mind. I was at a convention though and did see ppl using the nunchuck and wiimote. it's just buttons.

I agree that these games need to be advertised. How can people buy what they don't know exists? The only people that know these games exist are the non-casual wii gamers and the ps360 fanboys that constantly delude themselves into thinking the only games that exist on the wii are mini games. I don't remember ever seeing a commercial for great wii game like Zack & Wiki, but trying to watch the NBA play-offs I would see commercials for Haze during every time out.

Nintendo is the company that CREATES gamers. Next gen, they'll have beautiful people on commercials playing even prettier games. And the new gamers, as well as the old ones, are going to be all over that.

[QUOTE="Goldmatter"]

Ontain

SSBB doesn't really use motion sensing at all so i can see why ppl stick with what they are used to. I don't think it has to do with "hardcore" as much as the playstyle of the game. there's a lot of button pressing that happens in one match. you don't want to have shaking or gestures to substitute for that much pressing. that style of gameplay isn't designed with the wiimote in mind. I was at a convention though and did see ppl using the nunchuck and wiimote. it's just buttons.

Why is it that people expect the Wii-mote to be perfect with every single genre? Gamepads have problems with a lot of genres. KB&M has problems with a lot of genres. Why should the Wii-mote be any different.

A huge garbage dump near all those E.T. carts would be a perfect place for the Wii.

They must have missed the garbage dump and mistakingly found their way into people's homes by accident.

I have no clue. You cant just release a Wii 2 like a PS4 and just say "It's bigger, better, and more badass." because thats not what the Wii audance is looking for. If you do that, i bet most of them will just shrug their heads and go like "whatever. I'll just play my original Wii." To me, it seems like Nintendo will just fall off the charts agian untill their next big thing.

If the Wii truely ends up being huge (100 million units sold),

all they will need is to keep the Wii 2 affordable and it will sell.

Sony had the masses by the balls with the playstation brand and they blew it by making the PS3 way to expensive for a console.

I think their next console will be a more powerful Wii. Just show all the fun of Wii with HD graphics on the ads, and people will probably be all over it.locopatho
Yea, probably like how powerful the 360 is now, something like that.

keep the wii1 alive and just it just for casual games, and relese the wii 2 focused more for harcore gamers. casual gamers wont care about the graphics they just want something to play for a few minunites.
