The Personal Computer is on the verge of breaking records due to Nvidia's upcoming GPU the Geforce 9800! Which nearly does I Teraflop. To put it into perspective the 8800 GTX does roughly 330 Gflops so that makes the 9800 3x as powerful as the 8800.

http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39829 Perhaps it isn't the most reliable source but I don't think there is a need to fake this.

The question then becomes...where does this leave consoles. Knowing Microsoft they will or already are working on the next Xbox and it probably will be here sooner then we think but what about Sony and there 10 yr plan.

Crysis+ graphics will be hitting PCs within the next 6 months after Crysis releases I would imagine which will make everything else LOOK (not play) like weak sauce.

So if Sony doesn't release a another system within 10 yrs the PS3 is going to look way outdated.

The intent of this thread is not to bash the PS3 or 360, but to merely spark interest...will developers be able to take full use of the Geforce 9800 let alone the 8800 and if so what on earth are games going to look like. And were does this leave current and next-gen consoles that are based on cutting edge graphics?

Crysis is only the tip of the iceburg.

Its going to cost as much as a 8800 did when it came out. PC prices depreciate at a constant rate and top end always costs the same.

Yeah, I would imagine its going to be 500+ lol, but if AMD/ATI can get their act together and make a card to rival this upcoming beast then we will see a price drop or atleast not such a high inflation in price which would be nice.

True but top end cards for the past few years have been roughly 500 to 700 tops but for some odd reason last i knew the 8800 ultra is like 800 dollars which is insane! But you can get an 8800GTX in the 500 range which is nice.

I got the 8800 for 350 when it was released. Yay rebates and smart shopping. Whole-salers are nice.

Seeing as PC game sales are falling, I don't think more powerful hardware is going to spark any more interest than there already is.  I really want Crysis, but my PC is not powerful enough, processor and graphics wise.

Consoles are so appealing because of their stability. (hardware sales is another story)  I like knowing I don't have to update my graphics card every 3-4 years, but if I had the money, having a really powerful super-PC would be great.  HL2 ep1 was really pushing my Dell's limits, so I highly doubt Crysis will even work on my computer.

Both PCs and consoles have great games, but console hardware is more stable whereas PC's is not.

AWESOME steal! yeah GFX cards are not as pricy as they once where, and they have so many flavors (versions) so you can usually get the perfect on for any budget

Hardware fault on console = buy a whole new one

Hardware fault on PC (apart from Mobo, generally) = replace the faulty bit.

Something else to wonder about is, will the Geforce 9 series even be worth it if the cpu is so far behind bottlenecking the GPU? I would imagine Intel and AMD's plans to reinvent their cpu arcitecture in 08 will help prevent this.

You don't buy a console for the best graphics, you buy a console for ease of use, you buy a game, you pop it in, sit on your chair and play, easy as pie. No so easy with the PC.

an 8800GTS should run Crysis fine....what were you playing?  Crytek has already stated the game has lower requirements then STALKER.

I was watching a tech demo on youtube of crysis and the dev said the game was running maxed out on a 8800 I imagine GTX. How well Crysis runs is also obviously going to depend on the res that one wants to run it at also, so the demo could have been running at 1024 x 768 but I doubt it. It will be interesting to see.

I'm in no rush.  Things look great now - I am happy to wait until the newfangled gizmos are cheap to break into them in a big way...  And until then, extremely fun games are still being produced on contemporary hardware.

Oh, and this leaves consoles where they have been for the past 10'ish years for gaming...  Behind the curve technically, ahead of the curve for accessibility.  As history has pretty much shown, accessibility wins out in the hearts of gamers for the most part.

the demos from lost planet and cell factor ,,plus oblivion all had fps issues with everything maxed out...

i know demos dont get optimized much but still....

i think ncidia still need good drivers for these crds that are not out yet to run at their best..

this is my fisrt good pc so i havent played much but i was expecting those games to and demos to run smooth.

thats cool if thats true about it running great than a lesser game..but we shall see..

Its going to cost as much as a 8800 did when it came out. PC prices depreciate at a constant rate and top end always costs the same.

No, the high end's been pushed steadily upwards since the introduction of 3D accelerators.  $700 gaming video cards didn't exist in 2001, we thought $400 was high end then.

No, mad catz was the name of the series of high end cards that went for around 1000+ and had 512MB back when the 6800 series was just coming out. Slowly NVIDIA has phased these guys out and has become the top end manufacturer of cards. Its not suprising that their prices are inflating up to these guys. EDIT: Maybe it wasn't exactly called Mad catz, but the name is similar.

Quadcore CPU's will be in the mainstream by 2008. Both Intel & AMD are working on oct-core CPUs.

I don't know about the GTS, but I'm pretty sure Crytek said the demos earlier this year were running at 2560x1536, full settings, single core and getting 60-80fps, and its not optimized fully yet

Thats how much DX10 outperforms DX9

My point is that the "high end" in 2007 is generally more expensive than the "high end" five years ago. Not necessarily a bad thing unless you've got some compulsion to always buy the most powerful product available.

So if Sony doesn't release a another system within 10 yrs the PS3 is going to look way outdated.

Sony will still launch a new playstation every 5 years but they will continue to support the PS3 until it is 10 years old
