Best performance. I'm assuming leads and supporting are both included in performance because Mads Mikkelsen is nominated and he's a supporting character.

Both characters play supporting roles in Death Stranding.

The lead performance in Death Stranding is actually Sam Porter Bridges.

Real GOTY contender

It's gonna be super controversial to see Geoff handing his BFF Kojima game awards.

The Game Awards is just a big marketing campaign and cares less about the quality games that came out in a given year as much as it's a platform for marketing.

As much as I love Smash Ultimate, the fact that they're including a 2018 game is saying something. I'm fully aware Smash missed the deadline last year; but just think about it for a moment: they are going to announce the last character in the Fighter Pass during the show and that will perfectly supplement Smash's GOTY nomination - advertising the game's DLC.

Low IQ people can't comprehend how The Game Awards works even when they are looking at the information. Or they don't bother looking into readily available information about a basic subject before speaking on it.

@Nike_Air: low iq people? Nah.. I don't think it correlates. People are in to games for their own reasons. I don't believe inherently smart or high iq people flock to particular games at all. It is entirely possible to be smart with taste in games outside of "artsy" or "niche" experiences.

death stranding is an interesting title though because it elicited a fair amount (and maybe equal!) praise and punishment. It's a captivating title for the game awards... The fact that the pop culture bromance between Geoff and Koji (Geoji) exists makes for a fun soap opera. No?

I was responding to the controversy part as it pertained to the Geoff and Kojima friendship thing only. And what was implied there , specifically. Everything else you said just now is a different thing and doesn't matter to me at all. I don't care if some gamers don't like the game. I'm not attacking their IQ's on that.

The game will win or not based on the panel/voting. It's just that simple.It sounds as if people are already building in excuses (conspiracy theories) if it does win. That's pretty sad. That's what I'm trying to convey.

@Nike_Air: we live in the day and age of conspiracy theories receiving the same or less credit as truth.

There are people who think the world is flat. Yes... Those are low iq people, so I tend to agree on that point.

What to you makes DS a GOTY?

It's game of the year to me because it was the most entertaining game that I played so far. Fascinating . Addictive. Memorable. It has made a great impression on me. Even since finishing the game , I can't stop thinking about it. So many different things are burned into my brain. I don't get those feelings as much with the other games this year. They don't stick as hard. It was a wild ride.

If it wins , I think it is well deserved. It it doesn't , that's fine. It's up to the voters , not Geoff or Kojima.

I'm guessing Resident Evil 2 will win.

Only game release this year I had any extensive time with was Sekiro and CTR, the preceding a resounding letdown.

I spent most of the year on hiatus, dipping in and out of D2 and OW. Bit depressing I’m more interested in playing Halo Reach and Warcraft III Reforged than any new releases, at least until FFVII:R.

i don't care about the awards themselves.......just give me a botw2 trailer and i will be happy

If you need a video game to validate your IQ level; well, I have read some pretty dumb things on the internet.

The most humorous thing I am finding about the video game Death Stranding: is how it has suddenly turned a bunch of rabid gamer's into pseudo-art intellectuals.

Does anyone on this damned forum actually make a full-time living being a professional artist like I do? Does anyone here actually travel the world to works of art to study them?

I highly doubt much of you here gave a damn about art in video games before Death Stranding as much as you all cared about prettier graphics.

Now you have to have a high IQ to sink into a game like Death Stranding. LOL Not to de-merit the qualities of the game, but some of you here sure are full of yourselves pretending you have any base of knowledge in the culture of art history.

Nintendo got snubbed imo, luigis mansion, astral chain, super mario maker, fire emblem 3h, all could have replaced Control or Death Strandings goty spot also devil may cry 5 would have been a better choice than control or DS.

Control and DS should have been replaced by fire emblem and DMC5

Edit: Also gotta point out. The 2 above(FE &DMCV) have a higher overall MC score by both reviewers and users than control or DS

I beat Death Stranding , DMC 5 , and Control. And Death Stranding is one game of that group that I would most want to be nominated. I'd be ok with DMC 5 over Control , or Control over DMC 5. I'd be ok if neither were in and replaced with games I didn't play or played. It's really up to the voters anyway , but I'm happy both Death Stranding and Sekiro made it in particular.

Obviously , Metacritic isn't the end all be all for deciding. Otherwise , there would be no GOTY awards at. It would just be the Metacritic awards. How would DMC5 even comptete against Smash Bros Ultimate or whatever was rated higher at Metacritic? And we'd have Red Dead Redemption 2 winning GOTY over God of War last year? Yikes. I wouldn't want that kind of system.

For starters , it's just a weighted average of scores.

Secondly , scores typically come from just one person (that might be influenced by an overseer). There are many other reviewers at these sites that get their say and help decide the nominees and winners. For instance , you could have a reviewer give Death Stranding a 7 , but other people at the site who played it might think it's an 8 , 8.5 , 9 , 9 , 9 , 9 , 9.5 , 9.5 , and 10 respectively and as a collective it gets voted in because so many liked it and fought for it.

So it's likely going to come down to popularity , game taste , and passion ... over just a score from a person (or people) they don't agree with.

Unfortunately , some games that are more niche (maybe Fire Emblem) or less interesing (sports/racing) that scored high might get overlooked or not enough people played and loved them ... but one shouldn't cry about The Game Awards , Geoff , Kojima , Death Stranding , or Control if something like that happens. They have their system and it's up to the voting panel. It shouldn't be this upsetting to some people.
